Stadiums are the iconic structures that create lasting impressions and memories of an

Olympic Games. With the world’s eyes upon them they need to impress aesthetically and

function seamlessly.

Stadiums are sophisticated with diverse requirements. They need to meet the needs of a large

volume of spectators, both live at the venue and for the millions of television viewers around

the world, while also helping reduce the impact on the environment. GE offers integrated

solutions including water treatment technologies, security, general lighting, flood lighting and

energy distribution systems. Our capabilities encompass both permanent and temporary

solutions that can be scaled back post-Games – making them both practical and

economically sound.

Iconic stadiums

GE Lighting will help illuminate Beijing’s National Stadium. This masterpiece of engineering will be a

centerpiece at the Olympic Games, staging not only the athletics and football competitions, but

also the prestigious Opening and Closing Ceremonies. A venue as important as this, as well as the

National Aquatics Center, deserves the very best. So when it came to the job of lighting these

venues, GE was entrusted with providing general and sports lighting systems.

In a first for China, GE Water & Process Technologies is recycling the National Stadium’s rainwater

using Advanced Membrane Filtration Technology. Over 100 tons of rainwater per hour can be

collected and processed by a membrane, the size of six football fields, for re-use in landscaping,

fire-fighting and stadia cleaning. And since our technology meets stringent international water

purification standards, 16 tons per hour can also be converted into drinking water.

Hosting an Olympic Games can have a profound impact on the landscape of a city and Beijing is

no exception. GE is applying environmental resources, business expertise and technology to

create solutions to help ensure that the Olympic Games legacy is a positive one.

The Beijing Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (BOCOG) headquarters has selected GE

LED lighting to illuminate their building and their 80ft Beijing 2008 Olympic Games logo on the

building fascia. This lighting is expected to last up to 50,000 hours and is more energy efficient

than any conventional lighting solution.

GE has also cooperated with the China State Power Grid to provide 73 turnkey electric substations

at more than 50 sites for the Olympic Games, including the National Stadium, the International

Broadcast Center and the Olympic Green.

Building more sustainable Olympic Games

GE Energy has installed two high-efficiency Jenbacher gas engine units at the Jing Hui Garden

Hotel, which will host the international media during the Games. These units, which will produce

8,400 megawatt hours of power per year, will operate in combination with absorption chillers as

CCHP (combined cooling, heating and power) systems, allowing climate protection through the

usage of water as a refrigerant and the utilization of natural gas.

We are also supplying energy-efficient natural gas combined cycle turbines to deliver power,

heating and cooling to the Olympic Green.

Today, more than ever, security is paramount at international events such as the Olympic Games.

GE Security’s advanced security solutions improve the flow of passengers through high-volume

airports while helping to protect people, assets and infrastructure.

To help efficiently and accurately detect some of the most challenging substances, GE has provided

Beijing Airport Terminal 3 with GE CTX 9000 DSi advanced baggage screening systems. The CTX 9000

DSi is one of the world’s fastest operational TSA-certified explosive detection systems, which can

scan in excess of 400 bags per hour. GE has worked closely with the Beijing Airport to optimize these

systems for the increase in travelers expected throughout the seventeen days of the Games.

Below ground, GE supplies the technology to help keep the Beijing Subway running efficiently.

Our fire detection system will help alert smoke and fire hazards to support the Beijing Subway

network. The GE Fanuc PACSystems Rx3i and CIMPLICITY HMI Monitoring will help improve

automation, control and management of the train network that transports both spectators and

athletes to and from the Games.

With a long tradition of providing innovative technology, GE delivers efficient detection systems

to help secure high profile facilities and venues worldwide such as the Statue of Liberty,

Bibliotheca Alexandrina Museum and more than 200 international airports.

GE solutions extend protection and peace of mind to customers throughout the world.

Hosting the Olympic Games can have a huge impact on the lives of its residents. And it’s our aim

to help the transition of a city into an Olympic Games host venue. GE designs and implements

systems for both long term projects - such as building and expanding subways - and scalable,

temporary solutions that can expand to meet the needs of the Games at their peak, and

afterwards be removed.

And, as always, with imagination at work at the heart of every project we manage, our innovative

technology is developed to ensure that whatever infrastructure solution we are implementing, be

it temporary or permanent, is as sound as possible.

Keeping the Games infrastructure running

An event as large as the Olympic Games depends on an efficient infrastructure. To help improve

Beijing’s wastewater treatment capabilities, GE has supplied Qinghe Waste Water Plant with the

latest filtering technology. The new system can filter more than 80,000 cubic metres of wastewater

each day to maintain landscaping during the Games. This technology will help to reduce costs and

cut energy consumption by up to 30% over the next five years.

GE is also delivering several large non-Olympic related infrastructure projects across China. One

involves providing water-processing solutions for the Nanpu Waste Water Plant in Tangshan, which

allows recycled water to be used to cool equipment at nearby electricity plants.

Another involves supplying wind turbines for the Zhangbei and Shangyi power plants north of

Beijing. When the projects are completed, both power plants will generate 367.5 megawatts of

power and avoid over 800,000 tons of greenhouse gases compared with traditional energy sources.

Behind all great athletes are teams of dedicated medical experts. And behind those experts is GE

Healthcare. We provide the technology that is transforming and shaping a new age in patient

care worldwide. As the sole supplier of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology for the

Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, GE has installed two Signa HDe 1.5T systems at the Olympic Village

General Hospital. These technologies within close proximity of all the sporting competitions will

better enable clinicians to diagnose potential injuries earlier or simply monitor treatment to help

ensure a quick return to play. Every day an athlete spends in rehab is a day lost in training,

which is why diagnosing injuries earlier or monitoring the recovery in real time is crucial for elite

performance.

GE Healthcare provides transformational medical technologies and services that are shaping a

new age of patient care. Our vision for the future is to enable a new “early health” model of care

focused on earlier diagnosis, pre-symptomatic disease detection and disease prevention.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the Olympic Games, we have extended our existing

clinical research programs with our advanced miniaturized compact ultrasound systems to

include assessments of Olympic athletes. We will be conducting global clinical studies with the

Vividi for cardiovascular assessment of the U.S. Men’s Rowing and Weightlifting teams. The

LOGIQ®i will be used for conducting musculoskeletal global clinical studies of the U.S. and Men’s

and Women’s Weightlifting, U.S. Men’s Boxing and Wrestling teams.

Our commitment to improve athlete diagnostics and analysis will continue beyond Beijing to the

2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

than 3,600 hours of coverage in the U.S. – with a significant amount of coverage dedicated to primetime on

back nearly 50 years to Rome in 1960 (20 total hours) through Athens in 2004 (1,210 total hours), the 12

Olympic Games broadcasts to date have totalled 2,562 hours.

NBC Universal’s NBC, USA, Oxygen, MSNBC and CNBC will all provide coverage from Beijing with high definition

coverage on NBC’s HD affiliates, USA HD and Universal HD. Spanish-language Olympic coverage will be seen

on NBC Universal’s Telemundo. Olympic Games fans will have increased access to the Games with

approximately 2,200 hours of live streaming on NBCOlympics.com and 3,000 hours of Highlights, Rewinds and

Encores and On-the-Go (wireless) coverage to mobile fans. Wherever the action is taking place NBC will be

there to ensure that as many people as possible in the U.S. will be able to share in the spectacle.
