Bill Gates praises Andhra for using tech to help farmers

Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has lauded the Andhra Pradesh government for using technology to help farmers in the state.“Andhra Pradesh is taking bold steps. I expect we will be accelerating it (technology usage). More than half of India’s population in engaged in agricul-ture, and three-fourths of rural women are engaged in agriculture. Apart from gender equality, research has shown that having more women also increases production by 20 to 30 percent,” Gates said at the valedictory session of the AP AgTech Summit-2017. Gates also noted that the growth in economy will not only lead to a higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but also lift people out of poverty.“First, we can turn the largest economic sector in the country into a source of growth instead of a drag on the economy. Secondly, we can make sure that growth is inclusive and that it not only leads to a higher GDP but also lifts people out of poverty. Third, we can produce enough nutritious food to spurt a healthy and well educated labor force for the future, when the Indian economy will depend

even more on highly skilled workers,” he added.Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was also present in the summit. Naidu requested help from Bill and Melinda Foundation in agriculture, nutrition and health.Gates further said, “Two examples that I am very impressed with; one is the Mega Seed Park, which really is the first of its kind and it will make available lots of high quality seeds and coupled with that is the new EC distribution application, D Krishi, which will help farmers access quality seeds in a timely manner and ensure that the government’s resources are being widely used. These are the kind of inno-vations that will help achieve the Chief Minister’s goal of sustained double digit economic growth in Andhra Pradesh over the next decade.”Gates in Visakhapatnam visited the exhibition stalls in the summit along with Andhra Pradesh chief min-ister.The summit focused on innovative ideas, technol-ogies and global best practices to push agricultural transformation in the state. This three-day global event was organised by the Andhar Pradesh Government in association with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Dalberg Advisors.More than 1,500 global leaders from 61 countries including business heads, start-up founders, leading policymakers, progressive farmers, NGOs, agricul-ture and technology experts participated the sum-mit over three days.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) revealed the world’s most scal-able and modular

in-memory computing platform, HPE Superdome Flex. The platform enables enterprises of any size to process and analyze massive amounts of data and turn it into real-time business insights. In a world transformed by exponential data growth, customers face a complex dilemma – how to han-dle unprecedented data flows while maintaining business continuity and agility to quickly respond to business changes. One way companies are tackling this challenge is by leveraging in-mem-ory databases, such as SAP HANA, Oracle Data-base In-Memory and Microsoft SQL Server. HPE is the global leader for SAP HANA as approximately

50 per cent of SAP HANA server deployments are on HPE systems. In order to harness the full value of in-memory computing, the underlying infrastructure must be capable of addressing large data sets and process analytics without slowing transactions to achieve real-time insights. HPE Superdome Flex has a unique modular design that scales seamlessly so enterprises can keep pace with evolving data demands, while unmatched reliability capabilities provide a resilient platform that safeguards crit-ical workloads. “Customers want to harness all of their data to derive actionable insights in real-time to make more impactful business decisions,” said Vikram K, Senior Director, Data Center and Hybrid Cloud, HPE India. “With HPE Superdome Flex, customers can capitalize on in-memory data analytics for their most critical workloads and scale seamlessly as data volumes grow.”

Microsoft showcases Microsoft 365 in India

ALE, operating under the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise brand, announced it has received the 2017 Global Hybrid Unified Communications Architecture Com-petitive Strategy Innovation and Leadership Award from industry analyst firm Frost & Sullivan based on an assessment of best practices across multiple business performance categories. The award high-lights five key points that differentiate the ALE offer-ing from others in the market. 1. uration, and centralized analytics—all through its single management delegation capability. Rainbow delivers the benefits of cloud services with the best capabilities of on-premises platforms, allowing cus-tomers to avoid costly compromises and develop a communications architecture that best suits their particular needs.2. Price/Performance ValueBusiness users can make and receive calls from their business extension through the Rainbow desktop and mobile clients by leveraging a software agent that is a standard feature on the latest versions of the ALE call control platforms. This business-criti-cal feature, which others offer as a costly premium capability, is offered on top of standard PBX integra-tion across the industry.3. Customer Ownership ExperienceFor existing customers, ALE offers a hybrid archi-tecture that leverages the best of on-premises solu-tions and the Rainbow cloud. The hybrid architec-ture instils confidence to support customers’ exist-ing investments while building toward a cloud-only future.4. Stakeholder IntegrationWith customers, business partners, and third-party application partners in mind, Alcatel-Lucent Rain-

bow services provide a differentiated set of fea-tures and capabilities that set it apart from many of its competitors in the communications market, according to Frost & Sullivan. For customers, a fea-ture-rich freemium Rainbow service extends exist-ing on-premises solutions into the cloud, delivering significant investment protection and introducing newer capabilities with little to no risk. Channel partners, systems integrators, and vertical solu-tion integrators can offer Rainbow with a set of value-added capabilities for enterprises evolving in their digital transformation while gaining seamless access to important management and analytic tools.5. Brand EquityAccording to Frost & Sullivan, ALE puts a focus on commitment and innovation, demonstrating a com-mitted effort to protecting and enhancing the com-munications investments that customers and part-ners have made in the company’s products. ALE has a strategic focus in several key vertical industries—including hospitality, healthcare, transportation, and education—and its current and past success leads to developing specific communications solu-tions and business offerings within Rainbow that address the unique needs of these key industries.

nesses: they’re starting to realize that a secu-rity breach will happen to them at some point (57% compared to 51% last year), but they are still unsure on the most effective strategy to respond to these threats (42% ). The scale of the problem is even more worrying as the study showed us that uncertainty is significantly higher (63% ) among respondents who are IT security experts and are, therefore, more famil-iar with the issue. Surprisingly, and despite the high level of uncertainty about their strategies, the majority of companies (77% ) believe that they spend enough or even overspend on pro-tection from targeted attacks. This is perhaps due to how threat protection is perceived: threats are sometimes merely seen as a technical problem to be solved through buying and deploying more advanced cyberse-curity solutions. A more balanced approach to incident response, however, includes investing not only in the right technologies, but also in

people with specific skill sets, and in the right processes.People are another crucial component. 53% of businesses agree that they need to employ more specialists with specific experience in IT security, namely in SOC management, inci-dent response and threat hunting – a figure that jumps to 61% among enterprises. This is not surprising, as a lack of internal experts increases a company’s exposure to targeted attacks by 15%, and also increases the average financial impact of an attack on enterprises – from $930K to $1.1M. But all in all, to be able to effectively combat complex cyber threats, organizations also need to think about the incident response as a process, not a destina-tion. This means that there’s a need for a com-prehensive incident investigation framework, comprised of always-on monitoring, advanced detection, and critical security event mitiga-tion.

India among the top 7 countries for ransomware circulation, finds SophosLabs 2018 Malware Forecast

Sophos, a global leader in network and end-point security, announced its SophosLabs 2018 Malware Forecast, a report that recaps ransom-ware and other cybersecurity trends based on data collected from Sophos customer comput-ers worldwide during April 1 to Oct. 3, 2017. One key finding shows that while ransomware predominately attacked Windows systems in the last six months, Android, Linux and MacOS platforms were not immune. “Ransomware has become platform-agnostic. Ransomware mostly targets Windows computers, but this year, SophosLabs saw an increased amount of crypto-attacks on different devices and oper-

ating systems used by our customers world-wide,” said Dorka Palotay, SophosLabs security researcher and contributor to the ransomware analysis in the SophosLabs 2018 Malware Fore-cast.The report also tracks ransomware growth patterns, indicating that WannaCry, unleashed in May 2017, was the number one ransom-ware intercepted from customer computers, dethroning longtime ransomware leader Cer-ber, which first appeared in early 2016. Wan-naCry accounted for 45.3 percent of all ran-somware tracked through SophosLabs with Cerber accounting for 44.2 percent.“For the

first time we saw ransomware with worm-like characteristics, which contributed to the rapid expansion of WannaCry. This ransomware took advantage of a known Windows vulnerability to infect and spread to computers, making it hard to control,” said Palotay. “Even though our customers are protected against it and Wan-naCry has tapered off, we still see the threat because of its inherent nature to keep scan-ning and attacking computers. We’re expecting cyber criminals to build upon this ability to rep-licate seen in WannaCry and NotPetya, and this is already evident with Bad Rabbit ransomware, which shows many similarities to NotPetya.”

Appliances and Consumer Electronics (ACE) Industry Urges Government to Propel Growth in

Domestic Manufacturing

Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufac-turers Association (CEAMA), the apex industry body for the Appliances and Consumer Elec-tronics (ACE) industry concluded their 38th annual function focussed on ‘Championing Change in the Indian Appliance and Consumer Electronics’. Industry experts here voiced their opinions on policy changes, and shared their recommendations to propel growth within the segment. The occasion was graced by Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, Dr. Ajay Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Mr Sandeep Ladda, Technology Leader PwC along with Mr. Manish Sharma, President, CEAMA, Mr Sunil Vachani, Vice President, North CEAMA, Mr Kamal Nandi, Vice President, West, CEAMA and other CEAMA dignitaries.Additionally, in association with PwC, CEAMA unveiled a detailed report on ‘Championing Change in the Indian Appliance & Consumer Electronics (ACE) Industry’. With an antici-pated CAGR of only 9%, PwC findings state that manufacturing disabilities and a limited component ecosystem are root causes of low cumulative value addition. The large popula-tion and steep GDP growth over next 5 years will be the key driver for Indian economic pyra-mid shift towards the top. The report also goes onto illustrate government of India’s push to promote electronics manufacturing in order to achieve net zero imports, and placing the ACE industry at the forefront of digital India pro-

gram. This push has resulted in an increase in domestic manufacturing from INR 55,765 crore during 2015 – 16 to INR 64,752 crore during 2016 – 17.Sharing his views, Mr Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog said “The appliance and consumer elec-tronics (ACE) sector offers immense growth opportunities, not only in terms of consump-tion but also manufacturing and job creation. They have been one of the forthcoming indus-tries who have successfully aligned their busi-ness strategies to various government led initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’. The policy led initiatives proposed by the government have been specifically designed to aid the small and medium enterprises. CEAMA has given these SME’s a platform to voice their opinion and become more included in govern-ment led policy and growth discussions”. Sharing his views on this occasion Mr. Man-ish Sharma - President of CEAMA, said “CEAMA was established with the sole objective to address the emerging issues of the Appliances and Consumer Electronics industry (ACE), and evaluate and advocate alignment with govern-ment policies. The aim behind releasing this report was to bring to the fore challenges faced by the industry in the current environment, and the policy framework needed to support the continuously evolving business ecosystem especially local manufacturing. The consumer durable industry creates 3 indirect jobs for

every direct job, thus it needs to work closely with the government on further improving the local manufacturing framework to generate more employable labour”. Additionally a panel discussion was held to discuss the importance of enablers such as large scale demand generation for made in India products, cost competitiveness to make in India and easier to make in India policies to further empower the growth capacity of dura-ble industry.
