    day 1: Fly overnight to the netherlands.

    day 2: arrive at amsterdam Schipol where you will be met by your tour director. transfer to your hotel. take a walking tour of amsterdam. enjoy a welcome dinner.

    day 4: SubjectFocus:IJburg. this newest city district of amsterdam is built on man-made islands. the ambitious project is still under construction, with only 3 of the total of 7 islands having been completed. our architectural tour of iJburg features floating houses, villas and housing projects by Maccreanor lavington, vMx, atelier Kempe thill and more. FreetimeMustsee: anne Franks house. anne Frank was one of the Jewish victims of nazi persecution during WWii. in July 1942, she and her family, along with four others, were forced to go into hiding in an annex of rooms above her fathers office on the Prinsengracht.

    day 5: SubjectFocus:Almere. one of the netherlands youngest and fastest growing cities, and built on the reclaimed polder landscape, this city has continuously experimented with new and different approaches to living. this innovation has resulted in a diverse selection of housing typologies and remarkable architecture. Free timeMust do: no trip to the netherlands is complete without a visit to a windmill. the Zaanse Schans is a picturesque open-air museum is free of charge and boasts eight windmills.

    day 6: SubjectFocus:The Hague. located almost halfway between rotterdam and amsterdam, the hague makes for a great architectural day tour. once known as the Jugendstil or art nouveau capital of holland, it is now quickly developing into a true metropolitan city with an astonishing amount of modern high rises. on this architectural tour we will visit the city hall and library (richard Meier), dance theatre (oMa), tram tunnel (a hidden gem not to be missed! (oMa)), high rises by hans Kolhoff, benthem crouwel and more. on the return to amsterdam, stop off at the small towns of delft, famous for its pottery, and Gouda, famous for the red-skinned cheese. Farewell dinner.

    day 7: depart for home.

    The architectural capital of the Netherlands, Rotterdams imposing skyline can be seen from afar, characterized by such landmarks as the Euromast observation tower and the swan-like curve of the Erasmus Bridge. As a young, international city, Rotterdam continues to evolve and rebuild, and this drive for innovation is evident at every turn.

    architecture excursion from central Station to Java, KnSM island and borneo Sporenburg.

    Utrecht Architectural Tour. utrecht lies in the heart of the netherlands and offers a wide range of dutch architecture, from its beautiful historic city center and the influential Rietveld House to its cutting edge university campus with projects by oMa and un Studio.

    Sustainable architecture tour. highlights of these tours include an entire eco-quarter, a neighborhood of floating houses, straw-bale and passive houses and a nature park constructed on a former garbage dump.

    Van Gogh Museum. the museum contains the largest collection of van Goghs paintings in the world, including Bedroom at Arles and Sunflowers.

    Liedseplein. A common fixture of this entertainment-focused area is the street performers that can be found on the squares eastern side. From acrobatic break-dancing to freestyle jazz on the double bass, there is always something to see.

    Additional subject-focused visits The Estadi Olmpic Llus Companys. the olympic stadium on Montjuc hill, which

    overlooks barcelona from the south.

    Olympic Village. during the olympic Games, the athletes stayed on the opposite side of the city. this area was originally an unused industrial site, but now there stands two apartment blocks once used by the athletes. one is now an insurance company and the other is the 5-star arts hotel.

    Montjuc and Olympic Stadium. this arena was originally built in 1927 and was rebuilt in 1989 to be the main stadium for the 1992 Summer olympics. the stadium is situated on a large hill to the southwest of the city, which overlooks the harbor.

    day 1: Fly overnight to Spain.

    day 2: arrive barcelona where you will be met by your tour director. transfer to your hotel. take a walking tour of barcelona. enjoy a welcome dinner.

    day 3: SubjectFocus:Port Vell. learn about the restoration process of the obsolete harbor area, which included the introduction of new buildings and structures that revived the area into the beautiful entertainment center it is today. FreetimeMustdo:take a stroll up las ramblas from the port to catalunya Square, stopping along the way to watch the street artists or browse the art and craft stalls.

    day 4: SubjectFocus:Casa Batll. designed by Gaud, this structure is functional in a way that is much more typical of the present than of the past. Some of its elements are precursors to the vanguard of late 20th century architecture; it stands out because of its organic forms, the innovation of the concepts employed and the methodology used. SubjectFocus:Sagrada Familia. Gauds imposing, unfinished masterpiece is not expected to be complete until 2026exactly 100 years after his death. this amazing structure is a blend of Gothic, baroque and modern art.

    day 5: FreetimeMustsee:Nou Camp. the famous home to Futbol club barcelona, this magnificent stadium has a capacity of an awe-inspiring 120,000 and a great museum full of the proud teams history and heritage. the barcelona Futbol club Museum was opened in 1984 and is a must for anyone wanting to know what bara stood for during its almost 100 years of history. as

    they say: More than a futbol club. SubjectFocus:Casa Mil, or la Pedrera, as it is often called, is Gauds second most popular building in barcelona. it covers an area of more than 300 square feet and includes two large circular patios. one of the most interesting sites in the whole complex is the rooftop, where a large ensemble of surrealistic chimneys surrounds the building. Park Gell. also designed by Gaud is this unique and beautiful park, which, today, is open to the public who can enjoy the mosaics, structures and museumall testaments to the artists work.

    day 6: FreetimeMustdo:explore catalunya Square and Passeig de Graciahome to some of barcelonas best shops.

    day 7: SubjectFocus:Full day to Figueres and Girona. Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador dal is home to some impressive examples of Gothic architecture and the teatre-Museu which is a museum dedicated to his life and work. Salvador Dal Museum. creating in a period when science and psychotherapy were challenging accepted ideas, Salvador dals work is very much of his own time. Putting his work into context across different media, dal shows how surrealism was not bizarre for its own sake, but rather came out of the historical circumstances that he experienced at the time. Farewell dinner.

    day 8: depart for home.

    BarcelonaBarcelonas architecture naturally communicates the citys rich history, especially through the Gothic Quarter and the Eixample. Students will learn to appreciate the two most important styles of Barcelona architecture: Catalan Gothic, a medieval style, and Modernisme, a turn of the 20th century movement made famous by Antoni Gaud.

    port via cable car give some fresh air to those admiring the barcelona coastline.

    National Museum of Catalan Art. the Mnac contains the worlds most important collection of romanesque art as well as the Gothic art section and the cambo collection. Guided tours are currently only available in Spanish and catalan.

    day 2: arrive in berlin, where you will be met by your tour director. transfer to your hotel. take a walking tour of berlin. enjoy a welcome dinner.

    day 3: SubjectFocus:Vitra Design Museum. the company vitra has pursued a conscious approach to its own architecture, starting with the commission awarded to the english architect nicholas Grimshaw to build a new factory hall. his high-tech architecture was seen as upholding the vision of vitra as an enterprise synonymous with technical excellence. Spree River Cruise: a cruise along the River Spree flows through old and new berlin. highlights include Palace of the republic, berlin cathedral, Museum island and the reichstag.

    day 4: SubjectFocus:The Bauhaus Archive/Museum of Design in berlin is devoted to the research and presentation of the history and influence of the Bauhaus (1919-1933), the most important school of architecture, design and art in the 20th century. FreetimeMustsee:The Brandenburg Gate is berlins only remaining gate and a symbol of unified Germany.

    day 5: SubjectFocus:Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. its berlins biggest building project: a construction site thats the size of 2,000 football fields with countless cranes and machines as well as thousands of workers. 2.5 billion euros have been invested in this operation. the berlin-brandenburg airport, or ber, is one of the citys most important projects for the future. Freetime:visit to the Ku-damma wide, long boulevard

    that can be considered the champs-elyses of berlin.

    day 6: SubjectFocus:Jewish Museum. Daniel Libeskinds first major project brought him worldwide recognition and is considered to be one of berlins most prominent landmarks. Since this he has gone on to design the Master Plan for Ground Zero in new York. the museum is one of the most visited in berlin with the permanent exhibition presenting two millennia of German-Jewish history where visitors are able to see Germany, past and present, through the eyes of the Jewish minority. FreetimeMustsee:Wall Museum haus at checkpoint charlie. the museum at this world-famous former West/east crossing point features interactive exhibitions and demonstrations of how individuals smuggled themselves across the border. Students gain insight into the divide in Germany until 1989.

    day 7: Potsdam. the past 300 years have seen the transformation of Potsdam from a garrison town to one of europes most imposing royal capitals. Potsdams architectural masterpieces 17 palaces surrounded by an abundance of landscape gardens lining the banks of the beautiful havel waterscapehave helped determine Potsdams World cultural heritage status. another impact was made during Potsdams more recent history, dating back to the famous 1945 treaty of Potsdam, which is inextricably linked with cecilienhof Palace and the Glienicke bridgethe scene of exchange of secret agents during the cold War.

    day 8: depart for home.

    After becoming almost totally destroyed in the final years of World War II and broken apart during the Cold War, Berlin has reconstructed itself greatly. Students will see representations of many different historic periods within the city center, from a few surviving medieval buildings near Alexanderplatz, to the ultramodern glass and steel structures in Potsdamer Platz.

    Additional subject-focused visits Friedrichswerdersche Kirche. it is best known because of its permanent exhibition on the life and

    works of Karl Friedrich SchinkelPrussias renowned architectand his contemporaries, Johann Gottfried Schadow and christian daniel rauch.

    New Museum Island. A collection of five different museums sits upon Museum Island situated on the Spree river. one of the museums, the new Museum, was destroyed during WWii and rebuilt into the building it is today.

    Potsdamer Platz. This is an important public square and traffic intersection in the center of Berlin that has undergone some strategic redevelopment over the years since it became derelict following WWii.

    Must see: Optional leisure and cultural visits East Side Gallery. the berlin Wall east Side Gallery is a mile-long section of the Wall running along the

    banks of the river Spree. the side facing east has been painted by a number of artists, some of whom are quite well known. the open-air gallery has been listed as a historical monument since early 1992.

    House of Wannsee Conference. this beautiful villa and grounds on the lake is where the plans of the Final Solution were drawn up. today there is a museum about the holocaust and its organization with a large exhibition and a memorial to those who died.

    Reichstag. the seat of the German Parliamentis situated close to the brandenburg Gate.

    Must see: Optional leisure and cultural visits Magere Brug. of amsterdams 1280 bridges, the Magere brug, or Skinny bridge,

    is the most famous. it is a traditional double-leaf, dutch drawbridge connecting the banks of the river amstel that opens approximately every twenty minutes to let boats through.

    Jordaan. once a working class area, amsterdams Jordaan has become greatly sought after for its converted warehouses now inhabited by a colorful mixture of students, well-to-do businessmen and creative professionals. the Jordaan oozes atmosphere with its narrow streets, picturesque canals, cafs, art galleries and unique shops.

    Albert Cuypmarkt. the albert cuypmarkt is arguably the best-known and busiest outdoor market in europe. there are over 300 stalls with affordable goods ranging from fresh produce, to clothes to odds and ends. it attracts thousands of visitors every day, and is especially popular on Saturdays.

    Diamond Museum. a small and elegant museum organized by the distinguished amsterdam trader coster diamonds, this eye-catching exhibit has been visualized by all modern multimedia means.

    Additional subject-focused visits Schuttersgalerij. this portrait gallery holds works by the 17th century old Masters,

    whose depictions of amsterdams esteemed citizens bring life to the city at the time.

    Fluorescent Art Museum. this small museum exhibiting works created with fluorescent materials is also called Electric Ladyland, to honor the famous musician Jimi hendrix (after the title of one of his albums).

    Huis Marseille. every three months this foundation for photography organizes new exhibitions in this former house of a wealthy French merchant. all imaginary forms of photography are on display, with an emphasis on the mediums visual qualities.

    day 6: SubjectFocus:Stedelijk Mueum. one of the worlds richest exhibits of contemporary art, the Stedelijks collection includes modern paintings, sculpture, photography, graphic art, design objects and video art.     day 3: SubjectFocus:Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporneo is housed in the magnificent 15th-century Monasterio Santa Maria de las cuevas on the island of la cartuja. its permanent collection is mostly by 20th century andalusian artists. Free timeMustsee:Cathedral and the Giralda Tower. it is the largest place of worship in Spain and the third largest cathedral in the christian world. very close by is the royal Mudjar Palace known as the alcazar.

    day 4: SubjectFocus:Museo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum) has a fine collection of art by Spains most celebrated painters. FreetimeMustsee:Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza. This magnificent bullring is considered to be one of the finest in Spain and is one of the oldest and most important in the world.

    day 5: depart for cordoba. SubjectFocus:The Great Mosque, which has become the most extraordinary church-mosque of today. visit the ancient Jewish synagogue, la Judera and the picturesque square of la Plaza del Potro. the alcazar (of the christian Kings) features a castle with delightful gardens and a Moorish bathhouse.
