Dear Model Railroader,

Thank you for considering the purchase of our assembly jigs and kits. For 15 years we have provided modelers at alllevels with durable, precision tools that allow the trouble-free construction of timber bridges and trestles. Black Bearconstruction jigs allow the beginner to build that first timber trestle; and, they allow the master builder to concentrateon details and finishing rather than building jigs.

All our kits have two major components: a Jig and a Materials Pack. All the drawings and instructions are includedwith the Jig.

Some materials and tools are hard to find. Therefore, we have included a selection of items we think are of particularinterest to the model trestle and bridge builder. Please use the order form, an e-mail, or a letter to let us know whatyou think of our selection.

I also want to invite you to visit our website at www.blackbearcc.com . There is a lot of documentation, photos, and information available there.

Thanks again for your business. We hope to hear from you.

Very truly yours,

Michael C. BarrettPresident

To get the most out of your Bridge Jigs , plan on building several bridges.You can string them together end-to-end to create a Bridge Series .Or, you can put them together in a Curved Section of track.Or, you can put three side plates together to form a Side-by-Side Double Bridge .Regardless, you will need to consider how the bridge terminates at the Track Approach .For more ideas and details, refer to Model Railroad Bridges and Trestles , Kalmbach Publishing,1991;

Bridge and Trestle Handbook , Carstens Publications, 1992 or 2000, or The Model Railroader's Guide to Bridges, Trestles, & Tunnels , Kalmbach, 2005.

PLANNING YOUR BRIDGE LAYOUT

BRIDGE SERIES The easiest way to create a series of bridges is to assemble each bridge section on the same piece of bottom chord. This may result in a compromise on the bridge width because they are not all the same width. Be sure and maintain a minimum of 14 scale feet inside clearance in standard gauge. At Step 1 of the Assembly Instructions, leave the bottom chord sticking out of the ends of the jig. When one section of bridge is completed, move the bottom chord down and build the next section. Cut the shoes long enough to cover the span between the bridges. Other types of bridges, or a section of trestle, can be inserted between the bridges to create a really interesting effect.

DOUBLE BRIDGE

BRIDGES ON A CURVE

Three side plates can be combined to build a side-by-side double bridge. The pier jigs are made to allow an extra long pier plate to be used. Assemble one set of piers on one end of the pier plate. Then flip it around and glue the piers to the other end of the pier plate. You will need to cut longer floor beams to build the double bridge.

The short bridges can be used in a fairly small radius turn. The drawing shows a 130 scale foot radius turn in standard gauge. The bridge must be widened to allow for the additional inside clearance. Remember, you must cut longer floor beams to build the wider bridge.

THE TRACK APPROACH

- 4 -

If the bridge is approached by a trestle or set of piers, the pier or trestle under the shoe on the bridge will need to be shorter than the ones in the approach. Continue the bridge stringer on over the piers or trestles. Rest ties on the stringers. Brace the piers together.

If the bridge is to rest on an embankment, no pier or trestle is required. Rest the shoe on the top of the embankment or retaining wall. For simplicity, you can lay the track directly on the floor beams of the bridge.

When inserting a bridge in a trestle, use a double trestle bent at the ends of the bridge. The bents may need to be different heights to accommodate the bridge support.

The availability of iron and steel was critical to the development of truss-type bridges in the late 1800's. Prototypical Black Bear Truss and Deck Bridges use threaded, 2" diameter iron rods. These are modeled with scale music wire and plastic Nut-Bolt-Washer (NBW) moldings.

Music wire is strong and stays straight; however, it is hard to cut. Most wire cutters are easily damaged by music wire. The Xuron 2193 Hard Wire and Cable cutters will cut up to .040" diameter music wire. A grinder, cut-off wheel, or chain cutters also work.

Most of the following tips on modeling iron rods effectively have been taken from the Black Bear bridge assembly instructions.

DRILL

Build a simple jig to help you drill holes for the rods in repeatable locations.

DRILL 1

Start hole from one side of wood. Turn wood over and start from the other side. The two holes meet in the middle.

DRILL 2

ROD APPEARS STRAIGHT

Initially cut your rods long. Use them to help you get all the bridge elements square and parallel.

ABOUT IRON RODS

Each railroad line has its own set of specifications for attaching the elements of the trestle. The two basic techniques are bolts and boat spikes.

The bolts are typically 1/2" to 3/4" diameter with a 3" to 4" diameter cast iron washer under the head and nut.

The boat spikes are from 5/16" to 1/2" (3/8" is most typical) diameter.

FULL SIZE HO TRESTLE BENT4X DETAILS

A cost effective way to show the spike or bolt heads is to use a small spot of black, or dark red (rust colored) acrylic paint. Use high viscosity tube paints that are pasty in texture. Use the flattened end of a toothpick to imprint the "NBW's" shown below.

The Grandt Line NBW's shown in this catalog are intended to represent the nuts and washers used with 2" threaded rods.

Some modelers may wish to install NBW's on the trestles. We recommend the following sizes:

In N Scale, use P/N GL-5066 (2" threaded rod in N) to create a 6" diameter washer.In HO Scale, use P/N GL-5066 (2" threaded rod in N) to create a 3-1/4" diameter washer.In S Scale, use P/N GL-5093 (2" threaded rod in HO) to create a 4" diameter washer.In O Scale, use P/N GL-5093 (2" threaded rod in HO) to create a 3" diameter washer.

* Wood sizes close to those specified in the instructions may be used. Bias smaller wood to one side of the slot to maintain alignment. * Pre-stain all wood. Minwax or Black Bear Water Based stain works well. * Use white glue, carpenter's glue, or similar wood glue. Solvent based glues may damage the jig.

USING THE LEG CUTTING GUIDEMany Black Bear trestle jigs come with a Leg Cutting Guide . This device is attached to the top of the jig. It can be adjusted up and down by sliding it on the top of the jig. You adjust it to an appropriate location and use it as a guide to cut the legs to a common length. This is very important when building a frame trestle bent.

This transparent acrylic plate attaches

to the top of the jig.

The plate aligns the trestle legs

for cutting.

Page 10: Bridges

Did you ever wonder why a particular bridge was used in a particular situation? This is a discussion of some of the design process behind railroad bridge design.

The first option is no bridge . Use cuts and fills to remove the high spots and fill in the low spots. Follow the terrain. Flowing water has already found the best path through the mountains. Follow the river as it meanders down the valley. That is why it is common to see a railroad track crisscross a creek (or creek bed) as the most favorable roadbed conditions switch back and forth across the creek

When you are restricted to a 3 % grade, it takes a lot of track to go up or down 100 feet in elevation. Once the cost of building track around a valley exceeds the cost of building a bridge across the valley,it is time to consider a bridge.

Choosing a Timber Bridge

The trestle bridge was always the preferred bridge because it is the cheapest and easiest to build. Trestles are often built from the materials at hand. They can be used just about anywhere. Flowing water, either continuous or intermittent, can be a problem because debris can get caught on the trestle, dam up the flowing water, and eventually lead to the destruction of the trestle.

The Howe Truss Bridge revolutionized timber bridge construction. It's structural integrity makes efficient use of wood's ability to withstand compressive stress. It is characterized by heavy members that lean inward. These inward leaning members and top chord carry compression. The vertical members (typically iron rods) and bottom chord carry tension. The outward leaning members aren't actually needed in static situations. However, the dynamic loading applied by a moving train makes them necessary. Just about every timber bridge built after the Civil War is a Howe Truss Bridge.

The deck bridge is the best choice if flooding or height makes a trestle impractical. A deck bridge puts all the structure under the rails where it won't get hit by a train.

If the clearance is insufficient (flowing water or track crossing underneath) a truss bridge is required. A pony truss has short side panels and can span up to 80 feet. A through-truss bridge (like Midwest Products' Fox River Bridge) has tall side panels and can span up to 150 feet.

The Black Bear Arch Bridge is a "back woods" design that might have been common in the 1800's.

BLACK BEAR TRESTLE KITSAll Black Bear Construction Co. kits have two components that can be purchased together (as a kit) or separately: * Construction Jig , including all the instructions and drawings you need * Materials Pack , which includes all the wood you need to build seven trestle bents that span up to 120 feet. The bent heights are different for each kit, varying between 40 and 50 feet.

Construction Jig and InstructionsThis is a laser cut acrylic construction jig. It comes with all the instructions, drawings, and documentation. Step-by-step instructions show how to build the bents and install the trestle on your layout. A full size drawing shows complete details of the individual bents and the completed trestle. All jigs come with a Chopper Template to help you cut the angles.

Materials PackWood is supplied in bulk - 24" long pieces. That makes it easier to build long and tall trestles. If you want to build a trestle twice as tall , buy two materials packs. If you want to build a trestle twice as tall and twice as long buy four materials packs. You can buy as many materials packs as you need without having to buy another jig.

NBW PackNBW's are not included with the kit. NBW Packs are available: TJN-N (525 GL-5066 NBW's - 15 Sprues) for N and HO scale trestlesTJN-S (500 GL-5093 NBW's - 25 Sprues) for S and O scale trestles.

BLACK BEAR TRESTLE KITS - A Selection GuideIt is hard to believe how many different ways there are to build a trestle bent. We have selected a variety of designs to meet your needs. All of these jigs can be modified for round legs: just glue some styrene shim in the sides of the slots. You can make them as tall as you like by extending the legs out the bottom of the jig.

5-LEG, "PILE" DESIGN

This is the classic five-leg trestle design. It has been in use from the late 1800's to the present. Steam or diesel locomotives go great with this timeless design. This bent is characterized by legs that extend all the way from the ground up to the top cap. They often rest on sills at the base.

N, HO, S, and O kits are available in a Dual Gauge design that lets you build both Standard Gauge and Narrow Gauge bents. Z, N, and HO kits are also available in a Standard Gauge Only design.

The TRUE FRAME BENT is prototype modeling at its best. You will be surprised by how easy it is to build this bent.

The NOTCHED FRAME BENT looks like the prototype but is stronger. The legs go from the top cap to the ground.

The FALSE FRAME BENT has the look of the prototype without the difficulty of construction.

A FRAME BENT is characterized by horizontal sills that interrupt the vertical legs. They were common in southern Colorado and New Mexico where the trees don't grow as tall as they do in other parts of the country. They are typical of late 1800's and early 1900's trestles.

This jig is the perfect tool for building great looking trestle bents in three different styles. The full size drawing shows all the detail you need. The eight pages of instructions show you step-by-step how to build the trestle just like you want it.

The AT&SF, UP, C&NW, and Pennsy all use similar 6 leg trestle designs. They are probably the highest freight capacity wooden trestles ever built, and they are still being built today. These trestles look at home in any setting between the transition era and the present.

They were built with open decks and ballasted decks. And they were built with pile driven legs and in frame bent styles. Black Bear kits are available to build all these types of trestles.

Santa Fe 6-LEG TRESTLE KITS (HO Scale)TJK-6SFx-HO

Most U. S. railroads currently use trestle designs similar to Santa Fe's. The same trestle jig can be used to build a variety of prototypical trestles. All you need is different materials.

Kit builds seven (7) 6" tall trestle bents that span 15".

This is the original AT&SF 6-leg, pile trestle design that uses round timbers for the legs. These trestle bents are still being built today.

The same basic design was also used to build square legged, frame bents where necessary.

Trestles were built with both open decks and ballasted decks.

A prototype D&RGW narrow gauge trestle drawing is the basis for the TJK-4DNx trestle design.

TJK-4DNN,TJK-4DNHO, TJK-4DNS and TJK-4DNO.

The distinctive shape (four straight legs all tilted toward the center) is seen on a number of standard gauge railroads in the late 1800's and early 1900's. These trestles are the basis for the Standard Gauge D&RGW design.

Black Bear DOUBLE TRACK trestle jigs make it even easier to build double track trestles. The center-to-center track spacing has been set after considering (1) the NMRA Standards for straight and curved track, (2) additionalspace to allow for handling, coupling and un-coupling, and (3) modular standards.

The jigs use the 5-Leg trestle design as a basis.

All these jigs come with the Leg Cutting Guide .

TBK-xEvery layout has a place for this great looking standard timber truss bridge. In fact, you probably have several gaps you need to cross. The easiest of all the Black Bear bridges to build, you can make them almost any length you want. Combine two or more together for a really impressive bridge span. Use several truss designs and detail work to create a variety of bridges.

The kit has enough materials to build any one of these truss bridges:

A jig is included for building the vertical pier end supports for both narrow and standard gauge bridges. The vertical piers can be used anywhere on your layout.

MIDWEST PRODUCTS BRIDGE KITSMidwest Products has long been known for producing high quality model airplane and model boat kits. Mike Barrett, president of Black Bear Construction Co., designed these kits for Midwest Products and wrote the instruction manuals.

All Midwest Products kits are labeled according to the modeling skills required to successfully complete the project.

SKILL LEVEL 1 - No prior building experience required.Skill Level 1 kits have been designed for the person who has no prior experience building wood kits. Skill Level 1 kits utilize simple hand tools and basic building techniques that can be applied to more advanced models. Some parts in Skill Level 1 kits require trimming and fitting.

SKILL LEVEL 2 - Experience cutting and fitting parts required.Skill Level 2 kits have been designed for the person who has some prior experience building wood kits. All Skill Level 2 kits require some cutting, fitting, and shaping of parts.

All Midwest Products bridge kits feature . . . . . Micro-Cut quality basswood parts Detailed, step-by-step, illustrated "Success Series" construction manual Little or no prior experience required Conformance to applicable NMRA StandardsNote: Track and ties not included in any kits.

And we aren't kidding about "Success Series". If you follow the instructions, you will build a fine looking bridge.
