Océ Case Study Everything in decorating Giving the decorator everything that could possibly be needed for a perfect finish was Clement Brewer’s dream when he opened his first shop in Eastbourne on the Sussex coast, in 1904. Brewers now have over 130 branches covering the South of England, East Anglia and the Midlands, and employ over 1000 people. The Company has prospered by its readiness to anticipate market needs, and nurture a hard-won reputation for having everything the decorator will ever need, reinforced with knowledgeable, well-trained staff in all the branches. Production challenges Until recently, Brewers printed 4 posters every month for each of their 130 stores. The posters fit inside floor standing ‘A-frames’, normally positioned by the entrance to each store. The ‘A-frames’ are two sided, however a set of 4 posters were needed because the colors tended to run in the frames due to condensation, and fade in bright sunshine, resulting in the need for replacements. David Relf, IT Manager for Brewers explains: “For this one application, the branch requirements equated to 520 posters per month, which represents quite an undertaking for an in-house operation. On our previous equipment, the sheer volume, and hand holding required equated to around 3 days production per month on this one application. I was therefore keen to look for ways in which to achieve some cost savings.” Brewer’s and Sons, Ltd. Brewer’s Brewers are the UK’s largest independent supplier of decorating materials, providing the widest range of paints, wallpapers and sundries in the marketplace. Brewers supply virtually every known brand, and recommend the right product or solution for any type of surface. The company is a family business and takes pride in its high standard of customer service - a tradition going back over 100 years. Operating from a network of over 130 branches covering the South and the Midlands, Brewers benefits from its use of wide format color posters for point of sale, and point of purchase applications. These are printed centrally at head office, where until recently, print productivity had suffered. Brewers enlist- ed the help of Océ to address the problem, and have subsequently installed the multi-award winning Océ ColorWave ® 600 – resulting in a 50% increase in productivity, reduced waste, and real sustainability. 1/4

the technology was slow. We needed a faster technology, preferably one in which theprints would be sufficiently water-fast for outdoor use. The Océ ColorWave 600 has proved to be significantly faster, and the prints are definitely robust enough for

“Our print production used to be lengthy, with a lot of hand holding. Having invested in the latest wide format technology from Océ, our biggest saving has been in labor, plus we now have much greater production flexibility. It has certainly proved straightforward to cost justify the business benefits of the Océ ColorWave 600.”

Business payoffSince adopting the Océ ColorWave 600, Brewers have achieved multiple business benefits, including approximately £10k of cost savings in combined annual rental, service and consumables. David Relf expands: “Productivity has improved dramatically. The printing time for the ‘A-frame’ posters has been reduced by half. In addition, we no longer need to produce two sets of posters because the weather resistance of the prints is so good.”

like its speed and flexibility. They use it for last minute, on-demand jobs, and also to support the Brewers exhibitions team, pro-viding banners and posters. Color matching is very important, and it has provedreassuring to be able to match a difficult solid color from the Farrow and Ball range of paints. Overall, applications are quite varied. When we need A3 or A4 size prints for point of sale, we make use of a narrow roll of paper – thereby mini-mizing cutting, and waste.”
