From the Pastor’s Desk L ast year at Valentine's Day, I found myself bitterly

signing Everett, Ezra, and Cyrus' names to the back of valentines I had paid way too much for at CVS only hours before. It was, of course, past time for me to be in bed and the night before their party at daycare. I won-dered how in the world these cards that they may never see and that their friends would throw away would teach them about how to love. I was tired and uninterested in thinking through any bet-ter solution than succumbing to the social norm of signing and sending them the cards.

Clearly I am not much for the sentimentali-ty of this holiday. I am all for the encourage-ment to show love to others. In fact, I think Jesus more than encouraged us to show love: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first com-mandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” I think love is our mark, "They'll know we are Christians by our love..." So how might we better engage in the discipline of love all the time? And how can we then use Valentine's Day and the month of Feb-ruary as a reminder and time of encouragement in that discipline?

I am often drawn to the Sermon on the Mount when I think of how I'm called to love people. But Luke's version of the sermon happens on the plain.

Jesus is not up on a mount, removed from the people, preaching down to them. He is on the plain… with the people… on equal footing... among them... beside

them… interacting. How does that change the way you

hear these words: "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on

the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even

your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them

again. Do to others as you would have them do to you." Jesus speaking these words from a place of

close proximity to the people reminds me that I'm called to those places of close proximity as well.

There is no love from afar - we must engage with, in-teract with, “BE” with people to love them. And the circle of who we are called to love keeps widening—Enemies—People who are unkind to you—People who strike out at you. People who beg from you.

How might you spend time this month engaged in the discipline of loving others - especially those beyond your "normal" circle? Take some time and let me know how it goes or if I can go with you! In the meantime, I'm going to go buy some cute valentines for my kids so I'm not so bitter this year!

--Pastor Cindy Lattimer

Library News The library will be giving away books in Feb-

ruary. Many of the books are duplicates of ones that we already have. Some of them were donated but we were unable to find a place for them in our library. Please feel free to take any books that you would like to have. We ask that you do not return them to the library but pass them on. You will find them on a table in the coatroom next to the library.

We could use more library helpers to staff the library on Sunday mornings from 9:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. If you are interested, please contact Deborah

Hall by email or phone. (Both are listed in our church directory.) We appreciate your interest in the library. If you have any sugges-tions on movies or books, please do not hesitate to share them—again by phone or e-mail.

--Deborah Hall, Library Chairperson

It’s Cold Outside, But You Have Warm Hearts

Congratulations! We ended the year in a financially positive position. Our donations exceeded our ex-penses and outreach. Praise be to God! It is so heartwarming to know that our congregation met the commitment.

May the Peace of Christ continue to bless our church, our commitments, our projects and all the par-ticipants. May we show the community and our ex-tended family around the world that we follow our Savior Jesus Christ. We are very blessed and know that God is involved in all we think, say and do.

Thank You, LCOB I would like to thank the Wednesday morning prayer group and everyone else in the congregation for their cards, prayers, and loving concerns during my recent “odyssey of the arms” surgeries and recov-eries. I’m sure the prayers along with the great Doc-tors, nurses, and physical therapist helped during my recovery. --Jeff Putt ----------------------------------------------------------- Heartfelt thanks to my church family for the prayers, cards, calls, and concerns sent during the long recovery from my fall. Special thanks to the Wednesday Morning Prayer Breakfast group, Calvin Wenger, Climbers Fellowship group, and Under Shepherd, Grace Cox for their continuous support through the months of recovery. --Lorraine Dotterer ------------------------------------------------------------ A great big THANK YOU for the generous out-pouring of prayers, healing thoughts, cards, notes, words of encouragement, and meals. Each one has been a blessing – a daily reminder that Gloria is not going through her ordeal alone. We feel a loving community of support from our church family at LCOB. After Gloria’s chemotherapy ends in Febru-ary, her treatment will continue for several months through surgery and radiation. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. --Gloria and Chuck Denlinger ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Church Family, Thank you for all who called, sent cards and visit-ed me before and after surgery. News Update: Senior High Workcamp This Summer

Currently our plan is to work with Church of the Brethren Pastor Richard Marquil and his congregation in the city of San Juan de la Maguana, capital and larg-est city (120 thousand persons) of the San Juan prov-ince of the Dominican Republic. Tentative dates are Wednesday, July 19, to Friday, July 28. We're still in conversation to understand what would help Pastor Marquil most for us to do but it will likely be more community ministries than construction.

In addition to myself, Pastor Alix and Arelis Sable and Priscilla Sable have agreed to be advisors, and I am seeking another male and another female advisor. ACTION STEPS:

1. TELL ME YOU’RE GOING— Reply, message, text 717-419-4228.

2. VALID PASSPORT—You don't need a visa for the Dominican Republic, but you do need a passport. Please obtaining one if you want to participate in the trip ASAP. We'll need copies of the photo page well ahead of time to purchase airline tickets at reasonable rate.

3. PRAY—If you haven't already started, pray for every aspect of the work camp you can imagine. Pray for Pastor Marquil, his church and their city, that we'd be a blessing to them. Pray for Pastor Alix and myself as we make arrangements - this is a lot different than logging onto the Church of the Brethren website and checking the boxes for how many people and where we want to go. Pray for yourself: we do workcamp so that you will GET what Jesus meant, that greatness in his Way is only by serving. I'm praying that eve-ryone who goes (myself included) will be undone by God in such a way, by living with and serving sisters and brothers who live on a dollar or two a day, that we'll have no hope of returning to "life as normal" here in Lancaster. Honestly, that hope is the only way I can imagine the carbon footprint of all our air flights and sleep well.

I'm excited about what the Jesus who consistently does more than we know how to ask for or have ca-pacity to imagine will do in but especially through us for others July 19-28!

Free Event For Parents & Grandparents Of Children & Youth

The Parish Resource Center is hosting An Even-ing with Kendra Creasey Dean, Thursday Febru-ary 23, 2017, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Highland Presby-terian Church. Rev. Dr. Dean is Professor of Youth, Church and Culture at Princeton Theological Semi-nary, where she also works with the seminary’s Insti-tute for Youth Ministry. She has been one of the most respected thought leaders in youth ministry for two decades.

For families with children and youth, time is at a premium. But we are so convinced that Rev. Dr. Dean’s insights into youth, their developing faith, and how parents impact that have the potential to change both the lives of youth and parents that the LCOB youth ministry will pay the ticket cost for any par-ent or grandparent to attend this event. You can reserve your tickets by calling the church office at 717-397-6225 or emailing [email protected]. The deadline to signup is Sunday, February 12. Once we purchase them, the ticket price is non-refundable, so it’s important that you attend or if, unable to do so, let us know so we can pass your ticket to someone else. Thanks!

Youth Invitation To Baptism Series Continues Through Sunday, April 2

A core Brethren belief is that we baptize by trine immersion only those who have said yes for them-selves to Jesus’ call to follow him, as a visible, public witness to that commitment. Just as going to McDon-ald’s doesn’t transmogrify you into a Big Mac, we be-lieve neither church attendance nor the gift of a Chris-tian family make a Christian. So, we regularly offer youth an opportunity to hear and respond for them-selves to Jesus’ call to faith and discipleship. This year, from January 8-April 2, all youth grades 6-12 will be studying during Sunday School the life and teachings of Jesus, other key Bible narratives, core Christian practices and beliefs, and essential Church of the Brethren beliefs and practices. Led by Pastor Michael, the class will also feature church members sharing their faith journeys, and our oldest senior high youth sharing how their faith has devel-oped. There will also be connected service and mission projects. After completing the series, youth who choose to will be baptized on Palm Sunday, April 8. If you have questions, please call or text Pastor Michael at 717-419-4228 or email him at [email protected].

April 23 - Soup and Salad

MLK Day of Service Monday, January 17, three of our high school stu-

dents were awake and going by 6:45 a.m. (I know, right!?! - how cool is that!) to join me at the Anchor Breakfast Ministry, hosted by First United Methodist Church, to serve breakfast to any of our neighbors who came by, including many who are homeless and chronically underfed, including children and infants. After putting away the last stack of chairs like they learned to from Tim Heck, we came back to church and reflected on the experience. “I thought these would be lazy people who didn’t want to work, but I served coffee to someone coming off third shift who works three jobs.” “Everyone there was a person just like us, lots of ways people lose their homes, we should treat them with dignity.” We studied Jesus' sto-ry of the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25, and the encounter between Peter and Cornelius in Acts 10: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show fa-voritism, but accepts those who worship God and do what is right, regardless of where they’re from.” We watched part of a PBS documentary on race in Ameri-ca that describes how race is a thing people created, with no biological basis, in spite of the common no-tion that people of different races are of divergent sub-species of humanity. In our youth group here at LCOB, half Latinx and half white, it makes me so joy-ful that our youth don’t waste time pretending to all be or appear the same, because they’re too busy loving and caring for one another, doing life together. The ways in which they differ one from another strengthen rather than weaken their connections. Oh, and pizza, we shared pizza, because eating together is critically important. That’s how we spent MLK Day.

I’m grateful to God for the way God is working in the lives of our youth, growing them into maturing followers of Jesus, young women and men of deep compassion, full of passion for our world and love for their neighbors. And they are huge fun. Thanks for the amazingly generous way you support them with re-sources and prayer. Thanks for the gift of being pastor to them and their households.

--Pastor Michael

District Senior High Retreat Seven of our youth and Pastor Michael attended the District Senior High Retreat Friday, January 20-Sunday, January 22, at Camp Swatara. With the theme of “Body Image,” the retreat featured worship, breakout sessions, a lip-sync singing contest, and epic four- and nine-square tournaments. Thanks for your support that makes spiritual growth experiences like this happen for our youth.

Kelsey Murray Named As Coordinator for 2018 National Youth Conference LCOB’s own Kelsey Murray was announced Friday, January 20, as coordinator for the 2018 National Youth

Conference (NYC). As NYC coordinator, she will provide vision and leadership for the event, which she will plan with the National Youth Cabinet. Murray will have major administrative responsibilities for NYC, working on everything from coordinating volunteer staff to managing registration. “My experience on the 2010 National Youth Cabinet sparked my interest in ministry and jump started my leadership in various capacities in the Church of the Brethren,” she says. “NYC is a transformative week for youth to walk with Christ, share their struggles, meet other youth like them and grow. NYC can be a ‘mountain top’ that helps youth see the influence that their faith can have in their daily lives.” “Being a leader in the church means showing members of the body of Christ that they are not alone and supporting them through the valleys and mountaintops that life brings. It also means leading by example and showing the church what it means to be a servant of God with a loving heart.” NYC 2018 will be held July 21-26, 2018, on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. All high school-aged youth (including those who are one year post-high school) and their advisors are invited to attend. Our youth group will begin sign youth up this

summer of 2017, to minimize travel costs by collaborating with other local congregations sending youth. To read the full press release announcing Kelsey’s position, excerpted above, go to www.brethren.org/news/2017/
