Teachers will be mindful of this also. 2. All treats should be portion size and ready for handing out. 3. Please deliver ‘treats’ at 3pm. If these steps are followed there will be minimal disruption to the class routines. 2019 NAPLAN Online and Typing.com Brentwood PS will be engaging in NAPLAN online testing from next year. To upskill and prepare students for this task teachers are providing opportunities for Years 1 to 6 students to learn ‘touch’ typing, sometimes known as ‘all fingers go’. The program chosen to assist is Typing.com . Teachers are organising student accounts this week. It would be advantageous if students could complete additional practice at home. Please speak with your class teacher regarding login details. Student Attendance It is crucial students attend school as close to 100% as possible. 47% of Brentwood students have attended 100% of the time this term. It should be noted, however that if a student’s attendance rate falls below 90% (one day absent per fortnight) this is flagged as an ‘Indicated Risk’. The risk levels increase as attendance reduces. A mid-term audit of attendance has revealed interesting data. 29% of all absences are attributed to ‘Vacation’ absence, either Principal approved or unauthor- ised. It is important to remember that class programs are designed to flow from one day to the next. It is appreciated that children fall ill, there may be a family crisis, or unexpected event. In all absences please provide an explanation via Skoolbag, email or a note to the class teach- er. Thanking everyone for their support in this matter. 2018 Start Smart Banking It’s never too early to teach children the value of money. Research indi- cates that it is crucial to develop financial literacy skills from an early age. The Start Smart Primary program, coordinated by the Common- wealth Bank teaches these skills in a way that students can understand and enjoy. It was developed with a panel of leading specialists in prima- ry education, cognitive development, instructional design and financial literacy. Years 1, 3 & 5 students participated in very informative work- shops last week, teaching these vital skills. 2018 Easter Hat Parade The school’s parade will take place on Thursday 29 th March, commencing at 9am. This event is always lots of fun and an opportunity for creative minds to flourish. Children are encouraged to create their own wonderful hats to be worn during the parade. Some teachers will be making hats with their students. Please speak with the class teacher to clarify what the class is doing.

Sport Report

FMS

Students in Year 1-3 have finished their program focusing on catching and one leg balance. They have shown some good skill development during the program and have enjoyed a range of fun, engaging and inclu-sive games. We now move on to skipping and underarm throw. It is very beneficial to your child’s development to practice with them during this time, especially if they aren’t showing confident ability. Please come and see if me if you have any queries about your child’s skill development.

Geocaching

The Year 4-6 students continue to develop skills and learning the rules for geocaching, which is being thoroughly enjoyed by all. If you have any feedback for how you have been enjoying it outside of school, I would love to know!

Friday Senior Sport

Students are showing increasing skills ability in the games of their chosen sport of either cricket, lacrosse, tennis and basketball. Our cricket girls are demonstrating extra initiative through practice and training at lunch times, which will help them further develop their skills necessary to play in the upcoming interschool carnival. I would like to congratulate Darcy for or-ganisation and leadership with girls cricket.

Interschool Cricket & Lacrosse

We are taking some teams to the upcoming MDISSA Cricket and La-crosse Carnival on Friday 6th April, 2018. The carnival runs from 9:30am – 2:30pm at Tompkins Park and is in association with the WACA and East Fremantle Lacrosse Club. We are lucky enough to have 1 girls Cricket, 1 boys Cricket and a mixed lacrosse team attending the day. Team mem-bers are being chosen by their Friday Sport Teacher through their skills demonstrated during training sessions at lunch times and Friday Senior Sport. Teams will be notified by Friday 23rd March. If there are any parent helpers who are keen to help out at the carnival, please either come and see me at school or email me at [email protected]. We wish our teams the best of luck in the competition!

Rooms 9 and 14 have started their investigation of how sunlight af-fects plant growth, whilst Rooms 1 and 3 have been investigating which environmental conditions favour the growth of mould on bread (I'm sure, most of us would have experienced this one first hand when lunch has been left in a schoolbag over the holidays!). The Science Extension stu-dents have been learning to use microscopes correctly and create wet mount slides of pollen samples, and have also

h a d the opportunity to conduct field work around the school. The stu-dents learned to accurately use pH indicators, as well as digital meters to measure wind speed, air tempera-ture, soil moisture and light expo-sure levels. They have al-

so used the iPad app 'Pl@ntNet' to identify different plant spe-cies on our School grounds.

Coles Sports for Schools

Every $10 spent at Coles during the program, will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher. The more vouchers we collect, the more gear we could receive.

New Teacher—David McGlynn

Hi parents, students, friends and the broader Brentwood community. It has been a great start to Term 1 in both Room 12 and Room 14. For those of you who don't yet know me, I am David McGlynn, I work in both the Year 1/2 in conjunction with Mrs Davies and Year 4 with Miss Haynes. Both classes have been very well mannered, displaying the virtues promoted and we have been enjoying Term 1 thus far. A few things about me is that I grew up in Wodonga, Victo-ria. A regional city on the border of Victoria and New South Wales. I moved across from there to Perth in 2013 to study Teaching and don't have plans to move back. In my spare time I am coaching Colts football at West Coast AFC .

Virtue of the Fortnight – SELF-DISCIPLINE

Self-discipline means self-control. It is doing what you really want to do as long as you know it is OK to do it. You act instead of react. You get things done in an orderly and efficient way. With self-discipline you take charge

of yourself.

You are practicing self-discipline when you ……

Speak and act calmly when you are hurt or angry

Do things on time

Do what is expected without anyone watching over you

Practice moderation

Use detachment so your emotions won’t control you

“I have self-discipline. I use my time well and get things done. I choose my

actions with detachment.”

With Easter around the corner, keep your eyes peeled for a chocolate egg filled jar that may be appearing at school sometime soon; a great way to practise your counting skills kids!

Finally, remember that Brentwood Primary’s very own Cookbook, Brentwood Traditions, will be coming out in time for Mother’s Day in May!

Words aren’t needed here – you will know from your own children how mas-sively popular the phase 1 nature playground has been with all the kids, big and small, using it consistently, what a great result!
