JUMBLE SALE 👗 👖 This was a much better event than last year, with lots of our regular shoppers. The total taken was £132. Thanks to all the helpers who managed to turn the hall around, in an hour, from coffee morning to organised jumble sale. Thanks also to Susanna for taking all our leftovers for a future project. Lyford Foxes No we mean the 2 legged variety! Brentor Playing Field is now being used as an ‘additional home’ for the Lydford Foxes AFC. This youth football club encompasses teams of differing ages and boys and girls play alongside each other. Some of the teams will use the Brentor Playing Field for training on Tuesday evenings 6.30 to 8pm from now until the winter sets in. Saturday matches when being played at Brentor will ‘Kick Off’ around 11am. We would ask residents to be extra vigilant, particularly if you are exercising your dog. Please keep dogs on leads when in the vicinity of the players and make sure all dog waste is picked up and disposed of in the Dog Waste bin near the gate. We wish to make the Lydford Foxes very welcome to our beautiful ground. Youngsters living in Brentor may join the ‘Foxes’ and for more details visit www.lydfordfoxes.com. Wander along to the Playing Field and watch them in action.

MEXICAN NIGHT

What an amazing evening we had!

The hall was decorated with bunting,

parrots and lights. The tables had cacti’s

and colourful napkins and the food (as usual)

was tasty and with so much variety. Not too spicy but

‘interesting’!

We had sombreros and moustaches and ponchos galore.

We tried hitting the Piñata and sweets flew around the

hall.

A successful evening, not as well attended as other themed

nights, but great fun.

We supported The First Responders, who gave a brief

presentation which was so interesting that at least one

person asked about joining. £100 went to the charity and

the same to the hall funds. Sheryl 870554

It’s Just Not Cricket… Morning everyone.

What a marvellous match we have just

witnessed played out over three days

at the Brentor pavilion. It really was

good to see the Brentorians field a

talented team, under the expert eye of

Judy Baxter (Producer and Director), on a well prepared

pitch that suited some farce-paced bowling (? Ed) and the

occasional googly.

Tensions ran high throughout the match with clear divisions

of loyalty, partisan politics and personal ambition to the fore.

One faction favouring women’s cricket stood in polar

opposition to the men’s cricket hard-liners. It became clear

as battle lines were drawn and allegiances formed and

broken that some favoured no cricket at all and yet others

desired a compromise position that might please all parties

and none. Naked self-interest was revealed in the pursuit of

the rainbow unicorn of Merlin’s Hoard whilst more

immediate profits and advantage weighed heavily with

others.

Play opened with Brian Wood, as Exodus (or was it Exeter)

Squint, and David Harris, as Barrington Scraggs, looking

confident and relaxed, very much the men in form. Squint

really pulled the rabbit out of the hat (shome mishtake,

shurely; it was his dungarees - Ed)

Liz Hill, as Fenella Shaftgoring (I’ve never heard of her - Ed),

and John Wheeler, as Guy Boucher-Trotts (AKA Simeon

Loop), laid some solid foundations; followed in quick

succession by Phil Pearson, as Sergeant Sergeant, in

harmony with Sharon McQuillin, as Constable Jealous, who

did likewise. The Sergeant’s helmet put in a surprising

performance of its own (wrong on so many levels - Ed)

Glenys Mason, as Melissa Crowbucket, was ably partnered

by Sue Fraser, as Verity Nearcrumpet; the pair doing a great

job with some nifty footwork and dramatic flourishes (of a

jock-strap! Ed) as the pitch allowed.

Will Walker-Smith, as Pottager Cloud, played opposite Joe

Kuipers, as Cleveland Bereft, both delivering a slightly flaky

undertone with hints of match-fixing and disreputability (is

that a real word? Ed).

David Percival was a menacing Bennington Flax and Rob

Ormsby a suitably shifty Jester Swindells (“Trust me – I’m a

Bookmaker”). Special mention must go to Flax’s moustache

and eyebrows; remarkable appendages of chameleon-like

appearance that proved a hit with the crowd.

As play resumed in the second innings the pitch started to

show some real movement and the pace of delivery stepped

up. Beryl Light, as Lady Anstruther-Plinth, was imperious in

attack and saw off a vociferous defence put up by Scraggs,

dismissing him with a vicious spinning leg-break that took his

wicket. Mary Crowther, as Lady Mortington-Flip, put in a

similarly high class performance with a straight bat and a

strong wrist.

Chaos unfolded as Bereft and Cloud were caught out by

Crowbucket and Nearcrumpet in quick succession. Both

players falling just 98 runs short of their centuries. Boucher-

Trotts (AKA Loup) took to her second innings with

consummate, unsettling, unease; literally trotting cat-like to

the delight of the home crowd before being caught silly mid-

off by Jealous (shurely wig-off? Ed). Swindells looked to be

playing the entire field well but was then dismissed for

deliberate loose-bowelling (? Ed) just before tea (Shurely in

the tea? Ed).

Antonia Frankland, as Marlene, and Anne Clark, as Beryl,

work tirelessly in support (they got a lot of movement out of

that tea urn) before donning whites and pads and taking to

the pitch themselves as late-order players.

The match was brought to its natural conclusion by the

irrepressible Robin Burdfield, as Sir Hector Croquet, in fine

form as tail-ender. He put the matter beyond doubt with

nonchalant ease, batting all attacks away, straight into the

confectionary stall and out again, in true Beefy style.

With great thanks to the production crew of Barry Stott on

lighting and sound, Christopher Pancheri on set design, and

Helen de Carles on box office and front of house supported

by Clare Percival and Val Dawes.

A fine performance that had everything to do with amateur

dramaticals and nothing to do with cricket (or the chaotic

unravelling of a parliamentary democracy – Ed).

Distance back to the pavilion now 126,000 miles.

With apologies to the late great Richie Benaud
