“Camellias”

Thursday 19 February @ 7.30 pm in the

Brentor Village Hall

Jeremy Wilson has a renowned specialist nursery

in the South Hams where he cultivates many

hundreds of varieties of Camellias. He will be

giving us a fascinating talk on the care and

growing traits of these beautiful and interesting

plants.

Visitors very welcome - £2.00 on the door

Children’s Play Area

The village hall and playing field committee

would like to have another concerted attack on the

play area at the playing field and finish what was

begun at the end of November last year.

There really isn’t that much to get through, but we

would like to get the area cleared before the spring

and bird nesting time. We need willing volunteers

with all the usual kit of strimmers, heavy duty

loppers, secateurs, thick gloves, wellies etc. If we

could have that nice pyrotechnic expert there

again it would be good, along with as many of you

who are happy to spare an hour or two.

The response in November was amazing and a lot

of work was done - we would be so pleased to

repeat that.

The fantastic Brentor soup kitchen

(Tuscan bean soup anybody?)

will be there...no charge, as long

as you have done at least an hour’s

work. Again usual weather warning, if it is truly

dire we’ll cancel, but if it is just light snow, hail,

frost, thunder, lightning, drizzle we’ll go for it.

Sunday 1st March 11am-1.00pm. Soup served at

1.00pm.

BRENTOR COMMONS

The “Deep Midwinter” has arrived. It is such a

pleasure to crunch along the iron hard rutted paths

and see Poppy the dog throwing up a spray of

glittering frost as she gambols through the frozen

vegetation. It is difficult to imagine that the wildlife

can survive such conditions but the disturbed ground

created by badgers and rabbits is clear to see as they

have rooted up the grass alongside the path edges.

New Year’s Day saw a different

weather with the strong winds

blowing the clouds along at a great rate

of knots. Ravens seem to delight in these

conditions. Several pairs were showing their

consummate flying skills giving aerial displays during

the whole walk. All other birds kept to the shelter of

the bushes with only occasional calls to each other

indicating their whereabouts.

Looking closely into the undergrowth we can already

see the signs of spring to come. Bluebell bulbs are

starting to force their way through the leaf litter and

many of the bushes, particularly the oak, are

developing buds along their stems.

Next month, a look into the Liddaton pond will let us

see the frogspawn that really tells us that the new

year’s life cycle has really begun.

St Lukes – Open Gardens in Brentor

This year, we are taking over from Sally the fund-

raising for St Lukes by opening our gardens at the

end of May (more news next month).

Part of our fund raising will be a Raffle and this is

an appeal for any unwanted Christmas presents

that would be suitable for this occasion. If you

have something you would like to donate, do

please give me a ring.

The Toubkal Trek Challenge– supporting children’s charity CHICKS.

Following a very exciting and extremely successful expedition in 2014 to the highest peak in North Africa, CHICKS is seeking adventurers to join their trekking team who are once again heading for the high Atlas mountains, Morocco in September 2015.

CHICKS are inviting a team of trekkers to set out on the 10th September from London to Marrakech to conquer Mount Toubkal (4,165m) in just one long weekend. This exciting trip will take in the sights and sounds of vibrant Marrakesh as well as trekking through the stunning scenery of the High Atlas mountains. In just four days the trekkers will experience challenging walking through ever changing terrain, stay in a traditional Berber home-stay, a high altitude mountain hut and on the final day in Marrakech in a Riad with a steam bath to recover!

The trek will be led by an experienced UK trek leader accompanied by local Berber guides, no previous trekking experience is required but you do need to be prepared to get fit for the mountains. Trekkers will be raising vital funds for CHICKS who provide life changing respite breaks in Devon and Cornwall for disadvantaged children from the across the UK.

If you would like to find out more an information evening is being held on Tuesday 17th March, 6pm at VentureCo

Worldwide, Lockyer House, Paddons Row, Tavistock PL19 OHF when Mark Davison from VentureCo Worldwide will be sharing his expert knowledge about the trek. Alternatively visit the CHICKS website www.chicks.org.uk or contact [email protected].

Tor & Tavy WI

We have started the New Year, as usual, with a quiz

organised by John Wall, husband of our President, Trish.

Members were welcomed along with a visitor, Ann, from

New Zealand to a very entertaining evening, 5 teams

competed for a prize at the end of the evening answering

questions on Ladies, Gardening, Science and Nature, Cities,

General Knowledge anagrams. Jokers were played at each

team’s discretion and points awarded accordingly to be

recorded onto a score sheet. Refreshments were served and

WI business conducted, members were asked to fill out a

sheet asking them if they needed any changes to their

meeting and for suggestions for future meetings or outings.

We meet in the village hall on the 4th Thursday of every

month, except March this year as the hall is used all week

for the local Amateur Dramatics, when we shall meet on

18th. Meetings start at 7.30 and this coming month,

February, we hope to be belly dancing. We have many

interesting evenings in the pipeline for the next year to

include Reiki, origami, a talk by Quicks cheeses, walks on

Dartmoor, theatre trips, vineyard trips and many more

activities.

Tor & Tavy WI are part of a wider group of WI's called The

Four Rivers Group, we have a group meeting annually and

this year we are hosting the evening. On 30th April we are

inviting 15 members from each of the other WI's in the

group to Brentor Church, not the "one up the hill", to listen

and sing along to Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir, we will

then make our way to the village hall to a supper prepared

by our WI at which there will be a raffle and a chance to buy

some items at a stall to be run by next year’s hosts.

We would welcome anyone to come along for a taster

evening and they should ring Trish on 840115 or Lucie on
