1 Modeling Software for EHS Professionals

TankESP™ is a tank emissions calculation software product suite that uses the emission estimation procedures from Chapter 7 of U.S. EPA’s (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors (AP-42) for volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from storage tanks. TankESP is widely regarded as the most accurate tank emission calculation tool on the market because it was designed by Rob Ferry, one of the authors of AP-42 Chapter 7.1 and American Petroleum Institute (API) documents 19.1, 19.2 and 19.4.

TankESP also resolves many of the technical issues with TANKS 4.09d as is discussed in this detailed description and provides additional functionality for non-routine emissions events.

The TankESP Software Product Suite includes the following editions:

f TankESP PRO f TankESP FX f TankESP LT

This comprehensive set of products offers the same industry-leading tank emissions calculations software, but is available as three different editions that vary in capability and pricing to meet different levels of storage tank emission calculation requirements.

Product FeaturesThe TankESP Software Product Suite provides an easy-to-use, intuitive user interface to calculate the complex and extensive AP-42 storage tank emission calculations. TankESP PRO and TankESP FX can be customized to provide reports for permitting, agency reporting, and internal compliance tracking. Additionally, the TankESP Software Product Suite includes many time-saving features that are listed below.

f Calculates a tank’s worst-case, short-term emissions based on its monthly short-term emissions

f Calculates working loss and standing loss f Estimates emissions from storage tanks, correctly

applying U.S. EPA’s pre-revised AP-42 and final revised AP-42 emission factors and equations for annual and monthly emission estimates

f Applies TCEQ and API methodologies to estimate maximum short-term (pound/hour) emission estimates

f Estimates emissions from floating-roof landings using AP-42 methodology

f Estimates emissions from tank cleanings using AP-42 methodology

f Calculates speciated emissions for each type of emissions event, as well as emissions of total VOCs; speciated emissions may be further tracked as TRI, HAP, or by other group designations

f Calculates flashing emissions from production field tanks using the Laboratory GOR method

f Accommodates mid-month changes in service, calculating the emissions for a given service based on the number of days that the tank was in that service

f Adjusts emission estimates to account for a change in tank construction (such as adding a dome roof on an open-top external floating-roof tank) while maintaining historical records of estimated emissions based on the prior tank configuration for the period before the change

f Accounts for the control efficiency when vapors are routed to a control device

f Includes a detailed report that includes all the information in the U.S. EPA TANKS 4.09d “detail” report

Streamlined ProcessesData EntryTankESP is a simple to use, intuitive program that contains tabular front-end input forms that allow for easy block copy and paste functions from Excel spreadsheets exported from PI processbook and/or SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) process data historian to quickly populate throughout, product data and service data for routine emission calculations. TankESP also accommodates copying an existing site’s data as a new site in order to easily create “what-if” scenarios for permitting purposes. The data entry forms accept input from the user to be stored in the database and can also be used to view or edit the data already stored in the database. TankESP will perform data validation, streamlining the entire process and virtually eliminating the potential for costly errors. Once the desired changes are made to the data, the results on the emission data forms can be recalculated to account for the changes. The database can be stored in local computers, as well as in network locations for centralized data management and easy sharing between co-workers.

Stored Liquids and Pure ChemicalsA drop-down list at the top of the form allows you to select from the Stocks and Composition, Stock Site Applicability, Flash Gases, Flash Gas Site Applicability, and Pure Chemicals forms.

Site and Meteorological DataBREEZE TankESP enables users to add, edit and remove site details (through the Manage Sites form) and meteorological data (through the Manage Locations form). TankESP accommodates multiple Sites in the same database, with each Site identified by a Site Name and associated with a Location for meteorological data. TankESP includes four types of meteorological data that the user can easily choose from: Pre-2019 AP-42, Post-2019 AP-42 Class I, Post-2019 AP-42 Class II, and User Defined.

The Manage Sites form allows users to add a Site to TankESP with a Site Name, Description, and Location for meteorological data. The form also allows users to copy, edit or remove Sites that were created previously. Once a Site has been created, then information on the tanks belonging to that Site can be entered into the program.

Each set of meteorological data is referred to as a “Location” in the TankESP software. The Manage Locations form allows users to add, edit, view, or remove meteorological datasets. The data source for the “Pre-2019 AP-42” meteorological data is from the AP-42 Chapter 7 published in November 2006. The data source for the “Post-2019 AP-42 Class I” meteorological data is from the AP-42 Chapter 7 published in the final AP-42 revisions. The data source for the “Post-2019 AP-42 Class II” meteorological data is from National Solar Radiation Data Base 1991-2010 Update, which is also the data source of the meteorological data in the AP-42 Chapter 7 published in the final AP-42 revisions. The User Defined data set would be created by the user.

Tank and Floating Roof DataThe Edit Tank and Floating Roof Information form allows users to enter Tank and Floating Roof physical data. Users can toggle between the Tank form and the Floating Roof form by clicking on the tab at the bottom of the form.

Service Data (Routine and Non-Routine)The Edit Service Information form allows users to enter or edit service data on a tank-by-tank basis for a given time period. The Routine Data that can be entered in this form includes:

f Tank ID - Tank identification number f Start Date/Time f Throughput - Corresponding to net changes in liquid level f Throughput Unit - Options include Barrels, Gallons, or Feet f Stock - Liquid stored in the Tank from the drop-down list f Stock RVP - This field allows overriding the given Reid vapor

pressure (RVP) and may be used, for example, when there is a seasonal RVP change for gasoline

f Bulk Storage Temp - This field is for the liquid bulk temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit

f Comments - This field is not used in any computations, and may be left blank. It is provided solely for your convenience, should you choose to use it.

f Flash Gas - This field is typically used only for tanks in the production field. It requires that data on flash gases be entered in the Stocks form, in which case the flash gas associated with a given tank can be selected from the drop-down menu for this field.

Besides, users can enter the Non-Routine events (Roof Landing and Tank Cleaning) and Change of Service records on this form.

Note: TankESP LT only has one row available in this input table

Results and Reporting BREEZE TankESP enables users to view results of annual and monthly emissions estimation calculations and results of short-term* (pound/hour) emissions estimates. Errors in calculations are also noted in the results and an error message is available for more information on the error and debugging data entry. Emission calculation details can be viewed and validated through the Calculation Steps Excel templates. The software also provides details on Speciated Standing Emissions within that particular total or subtotal of VOC emissions, with results for each chemical that has been selected for speciation. Users can view reports that have already been created, or create a new custom report by editing existing reports or creating a new report*. The reports can be opened in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Canned report templates allow users to generate TANKS 4.09d-like reports quickly and easily.

*Note: TankESP LT does not estimate short-term emissions (only available in PRO and FX editions). TankESP LT also does not allow for custom reporting but rather uses a canned report similar to TANKS 4.09d (Custom reporting is available in PRO and FX editions).
