Thanks again to all who renewed their dues. Active members increase their “return on investment” by participating in squadron activities. But there are many who, unfortunately, we do not see very often but still faithfully pay their dues. We truly appreciate this. You are unselfishly supporting a good cause, even if you can’t participate. We are aware of you and we thank you. Paddle Smart class is August 23rd!! Come on out to Maumee Bay State Park. AND bring your kids (grandkids) ! Get them started Safely on this fast-growing, economical and healthy boating style. We’ll have fun, we’ll learn, there’s lunch and we should be able to see Past Commanders Jim Balogh and Jim Sommers get wet!

Call P/C Sommers to register—-it’ll be worth it—-419-297-7420. More details on Back Cover of BREEZE.

District 29 Summer Council and Rendezvous will be August 15-17 at TYC. It’s always good to meet old friends from other squadrons . I always learn a new trick or two and have no compunction about copying good ideas. Com-mander Hess’s cocktail party, the cruise of Maumee Bay and the Yarlett’s fish fry are sure to please. All members are always welcome at all district and national events. Call me or District Commander Al Hess . Commander’s Rendezvous will be at TYC on the Labor Day weekend. Come by boat. Still a few docks available. No deposit required, but boaters will be asked to kick in for the breakfasts, available Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings. Breakfasts coordinated by Chuck and Honey Hutchinson, so you know they’ll be good. Come on out and help celebrate the squadron’s 70th year!! $5 Picnic and Commander’s Complimentary Bar will be open Friday, August 29th. Karen Neeb will run the bar. Saturday late afternoon will be a Mediterranean buffet, including some exotic Eastern Mediterranean spirits. Bring guests! Let’s all work on getting more new members.

Free Docking at TYC for Cdrs Rendezvous!!!

And don’t forget Toledo’s presentation at the National Governing Board meeting in Detroit in September. Na-tional was very impressed with our activities during Safe Boating Week and also with the live radio broadcast on WTOD radio on May 31st. They’ve asked us to share our strategies, techniques and PR experiences. P/C Jim Ba-logh, P/C Sommers and Capt. Don Dietz will be participating in the PR and Marketing session on Friday morning, September 5th in Detroit. All members should seriously consider attending. Have dinner Saturday night with 500 other squadron members from all over the world.. Call me, or go to www.USPS.org for more details and registra-tion forms. Help with the Breeze next year. It’s fun. You can be creative. And you really get to know squadron people. Talk to Lt/C Larry Cole or Joyce Mease.

GOOD NEWS! PERMANENT EXEMPTION FOR EPA DISCHARGE PERMIT

On July 29, 2008, President Bush signed into law "The Clean Boating Act of 2008," which gives rec-reational boats a permanent exemption for the court-imposed EPA discharge permit. You con-tacted your Members of Congress and helped them understand the importance of boating in your life. And Congress heard the loud voices of tens of thou-sands of boaters! Nice work! Thanks to Bruce Em-erson for keeping THE BREEZE updated.

MAUMEE RIVER EDUCATIONAL CRUISE

ON THE ARAWANNA II To promote “Boat Smart” classes, an Educational Cruise was offered to students in 2008. It was a great experience on a glorious summer day Saturday, August 9. (The previ-ously scheduled 3 outings were cancelled due to thunder-storms.) For just $5 students viewed no wake, danger, cans, nuns, freighter turning basin, range lights, etc. Cruise was from Skyway Marina up to Maumee River Yacht Club. Charts were provided and the Arawanna Capt. Shawn McCarthy did an awesome job of explaining the river. He even piloted his boat thru a “don’t-go-there” area near Cor-butt Island. He had been thru this area many times and wanted to point out the danger of sand bars, water intake, etc.

PELEE AND LEAMINGTON CRUISE IN JULY

First stop for some of the boaters on Thursday

(Strohmeier, Gall, Mease, Leutz, Hutchinson) was

Pelee Island, then on to Leamington on Friday to

join up with the Evans. Here’s the traditional Fri-

day night stern-in party at Leamington.

Dan Strohmeier brings buns for Mary’s sloppy joes at the stern-in

gathering and Nelson arrives with his margarita.

Beautiful Leamington Marina. Has the repu-

tation of being the best marina on Lake Erie.

Dining out at Leamington “Noodle Factory”: l to r: Chuck &

Honey Hutchinson, Jan & Don Leutz, Ray & Barb Gall, Nelson &

Felicia Evans, Wayne Osborn, Dan & Mary Strohmeier. Thanks

to Don & Jan Leutz and Ernie Mease for BREEZE pictures. Breakfast together at Leamington.

Page 11 THE BREEZE Tour of 4 Wineries at Leamington

Some of the squadron boaters took advantage of a tour of 4

wineries. Reports are tour was marvelous with fantastic food. Enjoying winery food are l to r: Ernie Mease,

Honey Hutchinson, Chuck Hutchinson, Nelson

Evans, Felicia Evans and Jan Leutz.

Left: Honey, Jan, & Felicia model “footies” that

the winery required they wear instead of sandals.

Nelson Evans proved to be a real look-alike for a founder of

one of the wineries.

High winds on Sunday detained the power boats but

sailors Strohmeiers (above) and Galls departed.

Waiting on Sunday for winds to calm down were: l. to r. Chuck &

Honey Hutchinson, Nelson & Felicia Evans, Wayne Osborn, Don

(Jan was the picture taker) Leutz, and Ernie Mease. Wayne

Osborn and Ernie Mease cruised aboard Ernie’s boat.
