The incentives implemented by the New York Racing Association for Saturday’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile certainly worked, as 11 horses – led by Breeders’ Cup winners Groupie Doll and Gold-encents – were entered Wednesday for the one-turn, one-mile race at Aqueduct.

The Cigar Mile carries a base purse of $500,000, up from $400,000 a year ago. But outgoing NYRA racing secretary P.J. Campo put in provisions that any Breeders’ Cup winner would run for the winner’s share of a $1 million purse and any Grade 1 winner would run for the winner’s share of a $750,000 purse. In addition to Groupie Doll

and Goldencents, the race drew Grade 1 winners Flat Out, Verrazano, Capo Bastone, and Private Zone.

Forty Tales, Clearly Now, and Laugh Track – the latter being the runner-up in the BC Sprint – are all graded stakes winners. Late entrants to the field were Saratoga Snacks, winner of the Empire Classic for New York-breds, and Praetereo, winner of a third-level allowance race here Nov. 8 for this circuit’s leading trainer, David Jacobson.

The allure of the added money wasn’t the only reason Glenn Sorgenstein, part owner of Goldencents, wanted to ship his BC Dirt Mile winner across the country to New York. Believ-

Tom Keyser Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents enters Saturday’s Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct with an opportunity to solidify his credentials as a viable candidate for both the 3-year-old male and the male sprinter divisional championships.

5

ing that championship honors in both the 3-year-old male and sprint divi-sions are not settled, Sorgenstein said a victory here could put Goldencents in the conversation in one or both catego-ries.

“He’s the only 3-year-old that has won a Grade 1 against older company,” Sorgenstein said Wednesday, moments before boarding a New York-bound flight from Los Angeles. “A win in the Cigar would give him two Grade 1’s against older company, nothing that any other 3-year-old can do. That’s a pretty solid body of work to dispute.”

Sorgenstein, who owns Goldencents with Josh Kaplan, did concede that should Will Take Charge win Friday’s Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs, he would deserve the 3-year-old championship.

“But sprinter is still out there,” Sorgenstein said. “I think being on the ballot is important in one or two catego-ries.”

Goldencents, trained by Doug O’Neill, won the Grade 3 Sham and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby this year

but finished 17th behind Orb in the Kentucky Derby and finished fifth – Orb was fourth – in the Preakness. After a break, Goldencents came back with three runner-up finishes in graded sprint stakes in Southern Cali-fornia – suffering two losses to Points Offthebench – before winning the BC Dirt Mile.

Goldencents is the 120-pound high-weight in the Cigar Mile and will break from post 8 under Rafael Bejar-ano. O’Neill also will send out the speedy Private Zone from post 11 under Martin Pedroza. Private Zone won the Grade 1 Vosburgh at Belmont before finishing 10th in the BC Sprint. O’Neill said former jockey Rene Douglas, who manages Private Zone for Good Friends Stable, was keen on trying the Cigar Mile.

“He likes the idea of a one-turn mile – the pace might be a little easier than a three-quarter sprint,” O’Neill said. “If Private Zone can get any sort of breather, which he might not, he’s a bear trying to pass down the lane.”

Groupie Doll won the BC Filly and

Mare Sprint last year and was beaten a nose by Stay Thirsty in the Cigar Mile. She again won this year’s BC Filly and Mare Sprint and, after being purchased at the Keeneland sale Nov. 4 for $3.1 million by Mandy Pope, is back to take on the boys again in the Cigar Mile.

“This will be the toughest race she’s run in, really,” said Buff Brad-ley, trainer of Groupie Doll, who drew post 4. “There are some good horses in there.”

Flat Out is best known as the two-time winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup, run at 1 1/4 miles, and as a Belmont Park specialist. He earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 116 in beating Cross Traffic in the Grade 3 Westchester, a one-turn, one-mile race. He will break from post 9 under Junior Alvarado.

The Cigar Mile will go as race 8 on a 10-race card that begins at noon and includes the $400,000 Remsen for 2-year-old males, the $400,000 Demoi-selle for 2-year-old fillies, and the $400,000 Comely for 3-year-old fillies.

Consignor of the Week: Select SalesBy Joe Nevills

It hasn’t taken long for Select Sales to start compiling a formidable list of sales graduates, and that list got one name longer on Nov. 23 when Tepin won the Grade 3 Delta Downs Princess Stakes at Delta Downs by 1 1/4 lengths.

Based in Lexington, Ky., Select Sales was founded five years ago by Tom Ryan, Carrie Brogden, Jay Goodwin, and general manager Andrew Carey. Among the consignment’s alumni is Vyjack, a half-brother to Tepin, whose time on the 2013 Triple Crown trail included wins in the Grade 2 Jerome Stakes and Grade 3 Gotham Stakes, as well as starts in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Life Happened, the dam of Tepin and Vyjack, will be offered at the upcoming Keeneland January horses of all ages sale in foal to the late Harlan’s Holiday.

Other successful graduates of the Select Sales program include Grade 2 winner Twilight Eclipse, Grade 3 winner Pataky Kid, Puerto Rican champion and Grade 1-placed stakes winner My Wandy’s Girl, and stakes winners Ore Pass and Flashy Dresser.

David “Deuce” Greathouse II and his father, the late David Greathouse, secured Tepin out of the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale for owner Robert E. Masterson, spending $140,000. The filly has gone on to win two of four starts, also including a third-place finish in the Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs, for earnings of $342,084.

Carrie Brogden of Select Sales, who also bred the filly under the Machmer Hall banner, took a moment to reflect on Tepin’s time leading up to the yearling sale and Tepin’s success on the racetrack.

“It was before Vyjack was a graded stakes winner, and she was a full to Prime Cut who is graded stakes-placed. Normally,

we wouldn’t take a Bernstein to Saratoga, but she was one of our latest-nominated horses, right before the deadline of the catalog being printed, and she was such a great physical that we just decided to go ahead and have the inspectors give her a look and they loved her.

“She was very much typical of what this mare throws: Very uncomplicated, straightforward, not an issue with her conformation, not an issue with her height, just a very, very straightforward horse. She didn’t have the mass or the size of Vyjack, but he was a colt versus a filly.

“I distinctly remember talking to David Greathouse [who helped purchase Tepin]. My last conversation with him before he passed was about her, and he specifically came to my barn and we talked about her and talked about where they were pointing and how excited they were about her. It was

kind of prophetic, I guess.“I know David was thinking she was

probably more of a turf or Polytrack horse. I personally don’t think before he passed that he was expecting her to really explode on the dirt like she did.

“I love taking physicals that can stand up at Saratoga and the more they look at them, the more they like them. I think she ended up having seven vets at the sale, so in the end, we were very pleased with how she sold, and even more excited with how she’s running.”

On the price Brogden expected for Tepin…

“We thought she was basically $100,000 to $150,000, being a filly by her sire, because by then, Bernstein had died and they weren’t advertising him and he didn’t have any major runners at the time.”

Hovdey: Tranquility Farm’s fate needs industry’s attentionLet us pause in the public rending of

garments over the last days of Holly-wood Park in order to give thanks and pay tribute to another Southern Califor-nia institution sailing into the sunset.

Tranquility Farm, the Cadillac of the West’s all-purpose facilities serving those Thor-oughbreds deemed no longer to be of use as racehorses or breeding stock, is down-sizing and relocating to North-ern California near the town of Cottonwood, by the Sacramento River.

Under the full-time care of president Priscilla Clark, Tranquility has made its home in the foothills of the Tehach-apis, 70 miles northeast of Los Ange-les. With its noble herd that regularly topped 100, Tranquility Farm has been the answer to the question, “I wonder where so-and-so ended up?” when horseplayers gathered to mull the fate of many of their favorite hard-knockers over the past 15 years.

Long before Old Friends Equine in Kentucky made its name as a haven for retired headliners, Tranquility Farm gathered under its sheltering wings the likes of Santa Anita Derby winner Buddy Gil, Citation Handicap winner Southern Wish, Bay Shore Stakes winner Three Peat, Longacres Mile winner Snipledo, El Conejo Handicap winner Arey-outalkintome, San Gorgonio Handicap winner Invited Guest, American Derby winner Mananan McLir, Morvich Handicap winner Geronimo, Arlington-Washington Futurity winner Publica-tion, All American Handicap winner Mister Fire Eyes, and Elkhorn Stakes winner Marvin’s Faith.

Then there are the Thoroughbreds who were bred with hope and born to run, but never managed to register more than a blip on the racing radar –

better known as most Thoroughbreds. If you recognize the names of Cascade County, My Lady Love, Starstone, Dr. Glitter, Fire Lookout, Big Picture, or Royal Hostess, give yourself a pat on the back. They are among the vast majority of horses who came to Tranquility with-out much of a portfolio, and usually no sponsorship.

Clark and her colleagues in the after-care world long ago came to terms with the fact that human nature falls short when it comes to what becomes of the Thoroughbred racehorse. Commer-cial breeders see their product as a commodity with which all sales are final – forever. Those who play the claim-ing game intercept horses for a narrow window of time, and once a horse is gone from their inventory he’s the next guy’s problem, and the next guy, until he gets to the last guy, who never makes enough on the deal to provide for care after a tendon finally gives way.

The robust version of Tranquility Farm was able to last this long because of its primary patron, owner-breeder Gary Biszantz – who lent his father’s name to Tranquility’s full title, the Harry A. Biszantz Memorial Center for Thorough-bred Retirement – and the like-minded John Amerman, who came along to help with the expansion of its mission.

But even with people like Biszantz and Amerman and a first-class facility like Tranquility Farm, it was always a chal-lenge to fund the increasing population of racehorses abandoned or rescued from slaughter. If the industry is seri-ous about the issue, money for support of retirement and retraining facilities must come from purses, from pari-mutuel takeout, from sales company receipts, from ADW companies – from every viable institution that has some-how been able to monetize the physical sacrifice of the Thoroughbred.

Baby steps in that direction have been taken. CARMA, a spin-off of the Thor-

oughbred Owners of California, raises funds – some from purse money – and distributes them to accredited retire-ment facilities, while the newer Thor-oughbred Aftercare Alliance intends to spread the CARMA model industrywide.

After dedicating a significant portion of her life to a cause that at times seemed, by turns, both impossible and ignored, Clark is passing the baton – or at least picking up a smaller one.

Of the approximately 50 horses still at Tranquility, Clark will take 20 with her to the new property. They have continuing sponsorship. There is a place for 10 of the younger retirees at the Tehachapi farm, boarding there with its new owner, a veterinarian, but only if they get the support they need from the racing industry, while the rest will require homes and ongoing funds. These are the challenges occupying most of Clark’s time right now.

In a message to her board of direc-tors (on which this reporter has served), Clark lingered over a list of more than 300 lucky horses whose fate ended up in Tranquility’s lap.

“It is bittersweet to move on and some-what disengage from the struggle,” Clark noted, “but it has been appar-ent for quite some time that California owners are never going to support a retirement effort on the scale of Tran-quility Farm. At least we can all sleep at night knowing we have given so many wonderful horses years of good life they were never going to have, and in many cases secure homes forever.”

Those 20 horses who will journey with Clark to Shasta County will lead a life to be envied. She should be proud of what she has accomplished, and of the consciousness she has helped to raise. All that is fine, but it won’t stop her from waking up nights wondering what is going to happen to the horses who no longer have a refuge like they did at the old Tranquility Farm.
