Expert AnalysisBy Kenny Peck

BEST BET: Bodemeister (12th race)

First Race

1. Cardashi 2. McNamara 3. Varsity

CARDASHI is widest of 13 in the a.m. opener but that could actually be a good thing, as it may force him to rate off the pace and make one run; with plenty of speed to his insidehe'll need to stalk the pace, and though he's had success when on the lead he's also shown he's capable of sitting behind the leaders and making a stretch bid. MCNAMARA, likethe top pick, should be in an ideal spot behind a lively pace; comes off a game win at this distance. VARSITY is the favorite and the one to beat, though there are concerns due tothe fact thaty he's raced only twice in the last year; presence of DISCO DANDY could also be a problem, but it that one chooses to run in the 9th on Friday instead of in this raceVARSITY'S stock goes way up.

Second Race

1. Albrecht 2. Baileys Beach 3. Snow Secret Gin

ALBRECHT and BAILEYS BEACH seem to stand out here in terms of figures, and either can win it, but the former gets a slight edge thanks to his tactical speed, as there's not allthat much early zip in here; in fact, ALBRECHT may be able to shake loose and back down the pace, and given that scenario he'll be tough to reel in. BAILEYS BEACH may spotposition to ALBRECHT but he has the best figures in the field and his trainer wins at a very high rate. SNOW SECRET GIN looms a big price but he's an exotics threat thanks to hisspeed, given the relative lack of pace in this field.

Third Race

1. Zagora 2. Speak Easy Gal 3. Camelia Rose

ZAGORA disappointed as the favorite in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland but she had a legitimate excuse there, as there was a decided lack of speed signed on and the winnerdictated a slow tempo en route to the win; this race isn't loaded with pace either but the fractions should at least be honest, with SPEAK EASY GAL apparently the one to catch. Thelatter has a chance to steal it if she's completely unpressured, though she have to fend off likely pace prompters CAMELIA ROSE and LAUGHING at some point prior to hitting thestretch. CAMELIA ROSE draws inside and should enjoy a forward trip, a plus given the expcted race flow.

Fourth Race

1. Paynter 2. Brimstone Island 3. Respectful Ed

PAYNTER looms a heavy favorite but he's tough to against here, as he not only stands out on the strength of that last figure but his early zip also gives him a tactical edge, sincethere's little speed in here; he's also versatile enough to rate off the pace and make one run, giving Smith plenty of options. BRIMSTONE ISLAND has the best figures in the fieldwith the exception of PAYNTER, and he's also quick from the gate; will likely try to steal this from this inside post. RESPECTFUL ED was just a neck behind BRIMSTONEISLAND in the Canonero II, and he has the right to move up here in his third start off the layoff.

Fifth Race

1. Wire Funds 2. Corundum 3. Pendulum

WIRE FUNDS has to contend with a wide post but he does have enough tactical speed to get position, and with plenty of speed lined up inside he should be well spotted just off theleaders; this will be his first start off the claim for Ben Feliciano Jr., who does very well with new faces as well with turf sprinters in general. CORUNDUM took a while to break hismaiden but most of those early losses came on the main track, and he's clearly a new horse on the turf; should be running late. PENDULUM parlayed a perfect trip into a win overthis course and at this distance in his latest, proving he doesn't need the lead to run well; given another stalking trip he'll be tough late.

Sixth Race

1. Laurie's Rocket 2. Innocent Man 3. Il Villano

LAURIE'S ROCKET could be the main beneficiary if INNOCENT MAN and IL VILLANO were to hook up in the early stages, as expected, as he figures to be just in behind thoserunners down the backstretch, given his tactical speed; latest Beyer good enough to win it if he can run back it should INNOCENT MAN regress off that big figure he posted in hismost recent. The latter is clearly the one to fear off that 98 Beyer he earned last time, though it was a figure earned with the aid of a loose lead; that's a luxury he's not likely to have ifIL VILLANO flashes his customary speed in his first start since February.

Seventh Race

1. Clare Skies Ahead 2. Happy Choice 3. Magical Merry

CLARE SKIES AHEAD looked like a new horse in that win last time against claiming non-winners of two, cruising up quickly on the turn and continuing well to the wire; that washer first start in over nine months, and there is a possibility she regresses here off that effort, but if she can run back to that race she'll be tough today. HAPPY CHOICE is the maindanger, as she has steady Beyers and she's faced better in her turf tries, even if she's never actually won on this surface; likely short price combined with the layoff makes her one totry to beat, however. MAGICAL MERRY doesn't have the Beyers of the top two but she comes off a game try in her first start off the layoff, and the barn does well 2nd time backfollowing a break.

Eighth Race

1. Hamazing Destiny 2. Action Andy 3. Immortal Eyes

HAMAZING DESTINY was in against a very deep field in the Grade 2 Churchill Downs last time at seven furlongs, and it does seem that he's better at this distance at this point; hehasn't won in some time but he's been in some very tough spots, and he's run quite well. ACTION ANDY may want slightly longer than six furlongs but he has speed and an insidepost, which could prove important given the lack of a clear-cut pace scenario in this sprint; he was off the board last time but endured a tough trip on the lead. IMMORTAL EYESgets the rail and should be a factor from the start; especially dangerous given a clean break and a loose lead.

Ninth Race

1. Shkspeare Shaliyah 2. Easy Crossing 3. Achilles

SHKSPEARE SHALIYAH hasn't posted the kind of figures EASY CROSSING has been putting up but he hasn't really had a chance to, since he's been forced to try to close intosome slow early fractions; better set-up seems likely today, which should lead to an improved effort from him. EASY CROSSING is the main threat, given his Beyers, and he willin fact be tough given a trouble-free trip from his inside post; he's one of only a few in here proven in turf routes. ACHILLES is one such horse, having won both of his starts goinglong on the green; he's already shown the ability to stay close or come from well off the pace, and that will help him adapt no matter how the race flow develops.

Tenth Race

1. Awesomemundo 2. Absinthe Minded 3. Daring Reality

AWESOMEMUNDO was very sharp in that last score at Santa Anita, her third win in her last four starts, and the resulting Beyer makes her a threat here despite the rise into stakescompany; solid works since that win in February suggest she's on her toes for Baffert, who excels off this type of layoff. ABSINTHE MINDED has been banging heads with sometough customers but she's certainly held her own; she can rate a bit but she does seem to be at her best when on the lead, which could be an issue given the amount of speed in here.DARING REALITY has a decent late kick and she should be able to take advantage if the fractions are on the quick side.

Eleventh Race

1. Hudson Steele 2. Straight Story 3. Smart Bid

HUDSON STEELE has been solid as a rock since the switch to this surface, including the win last time over this course in his first start in nearly a year; "bounce" theorists will beexpecting him to regress today but he does seem to be in a good spot, as his early zip is a big plus given the general lack of pace in this field. With that in mind, STRAIGHT STORYcould prove tough to catch if he's able to get clear immediately and slow down the tempo, as expected; this is his first start since November but trainer Alan Goldberg wins at a strongrate with such runners. SMART BID can stay close, and that positional speed should give him the jump on the stone closers; note the two recent wins when he's returned from shortfreshenings.

Twelfth Race

1. Bodemeister 2. Creative Cause 3. I'll Have Another

BODEMEISTER dominated in the Arkansas Derby, a field void of any real speed that could test him in the early stages, but though he had to settle for 2nd he was exceptional inthe Kentucky Derby, making the lead despite the presence of several quality speeds in the field. The pace scenario in the Preakness Stakes looks much like what he encountered atOaklawn Park two back, as he is the only true pacesetter in this field, and he has license to run back to the 108 Beyer he posted in that race, which should be more than good enoughto win this. CREATIVE CAUSE rallied nicely while too late in the Derby but he has enough tactical speed to stay close if need be, and given the extreme difference in race dynamicsbetween that race and the Preakness he should be expected to be much closer in the early going today; might be the main threat to the favorite, as he could get first run at him into thelane. I'LL HAVE ANOTHER wore down BODEMEISTER in the late stages to win the Derby as the best horse that day, with the race flow squarely in his favor, but to win the 2ndleg of the Triple Crown he'll need to overcome a controlled pace; perhaps he's good enough to do it, as he's clearly sharp at the moment, and his ability to stay close means he doesn'tneed to come from well out of it.

Thirteenth Race

1. Spinnaker Bay 2. Sarbanes 3. Unex Dali

SPINNAKER BAY has twice tried to get on the turf but he was thwarted by rain each time; he makes his grass debut today for a barn which does well with turf runners. SARBANEShas only raced on the grass twice but he's shown a solid late kick; stretch threat given some pace help. UNEX DALI is dangerous given his Beyers but he's 0-for-9 and he'll be a lightprice against a field of unknown quality; capable, but may be an underlay.

Sixteenth Race

1. Rich Frynchman A 2. T M Fred Texas A 3. Dixies Valentine A

RICH FRYNCHMAN stretches out to a better distance. T M FRED TEXAS loves to win. DIXIES VALENTINE may be the pacesetter.
