In many ways, Orb is back where he started – literally and figuratively.

The son of Malibu Moon was foaled and raised at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., and headed out into the world needing to prove himself among the other 28,259 Thoroughbreds foaled in North America in 2010.

Orb returns to Claiborne among the most cele-brated members of his generation after splash-ing home on a sloppy track at Churchill Downs to become the first Kentucky Derby winner for the Phipps and Janney families.

Yet as he takes up residence in the Claiborne stallion barn – which once housed the likes of Nasrullah, Bold Ruler, Mr. Prospector, and Danzig – Orb once again must prove himself. This time, the challenge is to prove that he can pass on his talents to the next generation.

Orb is one of three classic winners who lead the new Kentucky sires for 2014. Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow enters stud at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, while Animal Kingdom, the

winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby, shuttles to Darley’s American base at Jonabell Farm in Lexington.

Animal Kingdom began his stallion career during the Southern Hemisphere breeding season at Arrowfield Stud in Australia.

The three arrive on the scene at a time when new sires appear in vogue in a resurgent market.

“I do think people are kind of coming back to new sires,” Travis White, stallion nominations manager for Taylor Made, said. “If you look back at the yearling sales [last fall], horses like Blame, Eskendereya, their first crop all sold very, very well. [The 2013 first-crop sires are] good-looking horses who were great racehorses. I think the market a few years back kind of shifted more toward proven stallions, but I do think it’s kind of swinging back more toward new horses.”

Animal Kingdom, at $35,000, is this season’s most expensive new North American sire. Orb will stand for $25,000, while Oxbow is priced at $20,000. Claiborne bloodstock manager Bernie Sams said pricing new sires properly is key.

“If they’re priced competitively, then you’ll be

able to pick and choose through a reasona-ble number of mares to give them a chance with their first crop,” Sams said. “If they’re priced too high, you’ll struggle getting mares to them. Right now, the demand for [Orb] has been very good. We’ve been able to pick and choose through a lot of nice mares.”

Orb won the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Florida Derby to establish himself as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby, which he won by 2 1/2 lengths. The colt never won again but did finish third in the Belmont and Travers stakes before being retired.

“Orb is very pretty; he’s put on some weight since he’s been here and is starting to fill out,” Sams said. “He’s a nice overall individual. Plus, he could run.”

In addition to winning the Kentucky Derby, the versatile Animal Kingdom was a dominant winner of the 2013 Dubai World Cup on a synthetic surface and was multiple Grade 1-placed on turf, includ-ing a runner-up effort to two-time reign-ing Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Mile while returning from a long layoff.

“He was a horse that [Darley owner Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum] had a particular interest in because of the plans of coming to Dubai, and it certainly all worked out with the win over there in the World Cup, and the way he did it was very impressive,” Charlie Boden, Darley’s head of sales in America, said.

Animal Kingdom was well received in Australia, with his first book that includes two-time champions Alinghi and Miss Finland as well as the dam of Austral-ian Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler. The stallion is a son of Brazilian-bred turf champion Leroidesanimaux, while his Group 3-winning dam is by two-time German Horse of the Year and leading sire Acatenango. His pedigree provides a solid outcross.

“Our pedigrees over the years have gotten more speed in them in America,” Boden said. “Obviously, this is a classic-distance horse, and stamina would be the moniker you’d put on him as an expected influence.”

The gritty Oxbow rebounded from a sixth-place effort in the Derby with a front-running win in the Preakness Stakes. He was a creditable second in the Belmont.

The Awesome Again colt sustained an ankle injury while finishing fourth in the Haskell Invitational in his final start.

“He won the Preakness with a 106 Beyer [Speed Figure], which ended up being the fastest of any Triple Crown race,” White said.

In addition to their classic winners, Clai-borne, Darley, and Taylor Made each adds a Grade/Group 1-winning son of another prominent stallion in the operation. Clai-borne will stand the turf star Data Link, another Janney homebred. The horse is among the first sons at stud by Claiborne’s popular young sire War Front.

Joining sire Lonhro as a shuttle stal-lion from Darley Australia was Denman, who will stand his first Kentucky season at Jonabell. The horse is the sire of three winners, including stakes winner Law, from his first five runners through last Tuesday, leading to strong interest in his yearlings at recent Australian sales.

Boden said standing a young stallion alongside his sire gives farms and breeders additional flexibility.

“We have more demand for Lonhro than we have capacity for Lonhro,” Boden said. “It’s a fairly easy redirect for a breeder interested in breeding to an Australian star like Lonhro to be able to say, ‘Well, I

don’t have any more seasons in Lonhro, but here’s a very exciting son at half the price.’ ”

Taylor Made’s flagship sire Unbridled’s Song died last July. The popular stallion had developed a reputation as a sire of sires, and Taylor Made adds another for 2014 in Grade 1 Donn Handicap winner Graydar.

“[Graydar’s female family is] free of a lot of the stuff that’s worked with Unbri-dled’s Song,” White said. “You have a lot of options with him. [Unbridled’s Song] bred so many Storm Cat-line mares, but with a lot of those stallion prospects, you couldn’t go back to that line. It’s nice to see one out of a line that wasn’t really common.”

Grade 3 winner Awesome Patriot, a full brother to Oxbow, is among four new stal-lions at Spendthrift Farm’s Kentucky base. The operation, which has helped launch the careers of its young sires through its popu-lar “Share the Upside” incentive program, also has three new regional sires for 2014.

Among Spendthrift’s new Kentucky stal-lions is the hard-knocking Flat Out (by Flatter), who won three Grade 1 events and earned more than $3.6 million while racing from ages 2 to 7.

Also making a splash this season are WinStar Farm and Adena Springs, which

each welcome several Grade 1 winners.Overanalyze (Dixie Union), Payn-

ter (Awesome Again), and Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) enter stud at WinStar in Versailles. Paynter, whose comeback from illness captivated racing fans in 2013, is out of a full sister to WinStar’s perennial leading sire Tiznow as well as to the dam of Oxbow and Awesome Patriot.

Take Charge Indy added luster Jan. 18 when half-brother Will Take Charge earned the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male. Both are out of multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady.

Adena, in Paris, welcomes 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Fort Larned (E Dubai) and two-time Eclipse finalist Point of Entry (Dynaformer). Between them, they captured eight Grade 1 events.

Shanghai Bobby, who went unbeaten in 2012 to earn champion 2-year-old male honors, enters stud at Coolmore’s Ameri-can base, Ashford Stud in Versailles. He is by the late Harlan’s Holiday, whose sons include breakout young sire Into Mischief.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day (Street Cry), forced into retire-ment by an injury in December, heads a trio of Grade 1-winning juveniles who enter stud at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington, along with Violence (Medaglia d’Oro) and Power Broker (Pulpit).

CaliforniaRichard’s Kid (Lemon Drop Kid) and

Smiling Tiger (Hold That Tiger), multiple Grade 1 winners in California, highlight the state’s new stallions for 2014.

The rugged Richard’s Kid won back-to-back editions of the Pacific Classic and took four other graded stakes while earning more than $2.4 million. The Del Mar track record holder makes his stallion debut at

Magali Farms in Santa Ynez.Smiling Tiger, standing at Premier

Equine Center in Oakdale, was among the nation’s leading sprinters during 2010-12, recording Grade 1 scores in the Bing Crosby Stakes, Triple Bend Handicap, and Ancient Title Stakes. He is a half-brother to She’s a Tiger, recently named champion 2-year-old filly of 2013.

New YorkChampion Trinniberg (Teuflesberg),

winner of the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, enters stud at Rockridge Stud in Hudson. He captured four graded stakes, all sprints, and placed in four others.

Spendthrift and Darley both expand their regional presence with new sires in the state. Spendthrift will stand Grade 1 winner The Lumber Guy (Grand Slam), New York’s 2012 Horse of the Year, at Keane Stud. Grade 1 winner Emcee (Unbridled’s Song) enters stud at Sequel Stallions for Darley.

FloridaFlorida’s stallion market gets a major

boost with the launch of Pleasant Acres Stallions. The roster is made up prima-rily of new sires, including Grade/Group 1 winners Passion for Gold (Medaglia d’Oro), Poseidon’s Warrior (Speightstown), and Treasure Beach (Galileo).

Wrote (High Chaparral), the winner of the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf; fellow Grade 1 winner Turbo Compressor (Halo’s Image); and Grade 2 winner Duke of Mischief (Graeme Hall) begin their stud careers at Northwest Stud in Ocala.

Another get for the state is the versatile Soldat (War Front). A graded stakes winner on turf and dirt, he enters stud at Woodford Thoroughbreds near Ocala.

InternationalAfter coming to the U.S. to run a

close third in the Breeders’ Cup Clas-sic, Declaration of War (War Front) returns to Europe to enter stud at Cool-more’s Irish headquarters. Last year, the horse captured the Queen Anne Stakes and Juddmonte International to estab-lish himself among the top runners in Europe.

Also entering stud for Coolmore in Ireland is three-time classic winner Camelot (Montjeu), who in 2012 finished three-quarters of a length short of becom-ing the first English Triple Crown winner since 1970.

Three-time Group 1 winner Al Kazeem (Dubawi) leads the stallions retiring to stud in England this year, heading to The Royal Studs. Among the mares in his first book is two-time Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Mizdirection.

Other high-profile Group 1 winners entering stud in Europe include Dawn Approach (New Approach) and Reckless Abandon (Exchange Rate) at Kildangan Stud in Ireland; Farhh at Dalham Hall Stud in England; and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner George Vancouver (Henry-thenavigator), at Haras de La Hetraie in France.

Japan’s 2011 Horse of the Year Orfevre (Stay Gold) enters retirement off an eight-length win in last month’s Arima Kinen, his sixth Group 1 victory. The two-time Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe runner-up enters stud at Shadai Stallion Station on the island of Hokkaido, which also adds multi-ple Group 1 winner Novellist (Monsun) to its 2014 roster.

Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso (Dubawi) will stand his first season at Darley’s Japanese base on Hokkaido.

By Mike Welsch

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said he was doing “great” Sunday morning, and why shouldn’t he have been, in light of Cairo Prince’s outstanding performance at Gulf-stream Park Saturday in the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes?

The son of Pioneerof the Nile parlayed a perfect trip under jockey Luis Saez into a convincing 5 3/4-length victory over Conquest Titan in the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull, earning a 95 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest of his four-race career.

“He’s happy this morning, so I’m happy,” McLaughlin said Sunday. “He came out of the race bright-eyed and feeling great.”

McLaughlin said the Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 22 would be the “obvious” choice for Cairo Prince’s next start but wouldn’t commit to the Grade 2 fixture just yet.

“We’ll get together, see what the figures and the sheets are saying, and talk about what the best program will be for him going forward,” McLaughlin said. “If he continues to do this well down here, the Fountain of Youth is the logical spot. The [Grade 3] Gotham is a week later, which would give us five weeks instead of four, but I don’t really like the inner course up there [at Aqueduct] with a horse from off the pace. So, I doubt we’ll do that, although it would bring the [Grade 1] Wood Memo-rial [on April 5] into play. The only thing I will say is that he won’t run anywhere else but Gulfstream or New York.”

McLaughlin also was quick to praise the job Saez did in handling Cairo Prince in the Holy Bull.

“Luis rode him perfectly,” McLaugh-lin said. “In fact, that’s one thing I worry about: Everything did go very, very well for him in this race.”

Mark Casse also was pleased with the effort he got from Conquest Titan in the Holy Bull.

“I wanted him to stay a little closer to the pace, but he got pinched back a little on the first turn, which maybe was a bless-ing in disguise,” Casse said. “But overall, I thought he ran well. It’s tough to come from way off the pace at Gulfstream, especially breaking from an outside post like he did. I just wanted him to show that he belonged with that group, and I think he proved that

with his performance.”Casse said he hasn’t even begun to think

about what might be next for Conquest Titan, a son of Birdstone who was a stakes winner on Polytrack at age 2.

“We’ll see how he trains coming out of this race, but we have so many options,” Casse said. “Part of me would love for him to stay at Gulfstream and run in the Fountain of Youth. You always like to stay at home if you can, but I just don’t know if this track suits him, and at some point, you have to start thinking about earning Derby points.”

Intense Holiday, who finished third after breaking from the extreme outside in the 11-horse Holy Bull field, also came out of the race well, according to trainer Todd Pletcher, who was happy with his horse’s effort, even in defeat.

“I thought he ran very well,” Pletcher said. “We were able to negotiate a pretty good trip from the 11 post. I thought he put in a big middle move but flattened out just a little bit the last part. I was hoping he could hang on for second, but he got nosed out for that. Cairo Prince was just the best horse yesterday.”

Pletcher said he’ll consider all his options before deciding where Intense Holiday will start next.

“I think everything is in play,” Pletcher said. “We’ll see how things sort out over

the next few weeks. The Fountain of Youth is coming up tough, so we might consider heading to Louisiana, Oaklawn, or one of the other spots. Good thing about now is there are a ton of options.”

Trainer Shug McGaughey said he’d likely return Mr Speaker to turf following his seventh-place finish in the Holy Bull.

“I was a little surprised that he was up that close, but the winner was sitting right on his tail,” McGaughey said. “I think at this point, he’s going to be better on the grass.”

Trainer Chad Brown said Coup de Grace is off the Derby trail after suffering his first defeat when finishing a tiring 10th in the Holy Bull.

“He came back okay,” Brown said. “We’ll just send him back to the track in a couple of days and restart slow with him. He got a disappointing trip. He didn’t break well, then rushed up to the lead and was fighting the bit quite a bit. He wasn’t a cooperative horse. The unfortunate thing is we didn’t learn much about the horse around two turns because at the three-eighths pole, he was done.

“But he looks good, he’s a nice horse, he’s got a lot of talent. We’re still trying to figure him out, what he wants to do. More than likely, we’ll freshen him up a bit – I don’t know how long – and cut him back to one turn and more or less start all over somewhere.”

Art Sherman is the trainer of California Chrome, the winner of Saturday’s $250,750 California Cup Derby for statebreds at Santa Anita. He is quickly becoming the colt’s biggest fan.

On Sunday, Sherman said he was delighted by the way California Chrome burst clear in early stretch to win the race over 1 1/16 miles by 5 1/2 lengths.

“The horse kind of impressed me,” Sher-man said. “I was hoping he didn’t move too quickly.”

The victory has left Sherman ready to try California Chrome in the Grade 2, $300,000 San Felipe Stakes over 1 1/16 miles against open company March 8. The San Felipe is a prep for the Grade 1, $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 5.

“It will give us a chance to run against those kind of horses,” he said.

In the Cal Cup Derby, California Chrome won his third stakes. Last year, Califor-nia Chrome won two stakes for Califor-nia-breds – the Graduation Stakes over 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar in July and the King Glorious Stakes over seven furlongs at Betfair Hollywood Park in December. Jockey Victor Espinoza was aboard for the King Glorious and Cal Cup Derby.

Owned by breeders Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, California Chrome has won four of eight starts and earned $354,850. Last September, California Chrome started in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and finished a troubled sixth, beaten two lengths by Tamarando, who was second in the Cal Cup Derby.

The Cal Cup Derby was one of five stakes for California-breds on Saturday. Of the other four winners, Weewinnin, who won the $251,500 Cal Cup Turf Classic over 1 1/8 miles, is most likely to run in a graded stakes in his next start.

Trainer Brian Koriner said turf races such as the $350,000 Frank Kilroe Mile on March 8 or the $200,000 San Luis Rey Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on March 22 are possibilities.

“The mile-and-a-half division is not the strongest anymore,” Koriner said. “But they’ll all come up tough at this point.”

Weewinnin missed most of his 3-year-old season after undergoing surgery to have a bone chip removed from a knee. The Cal

Cup Turf Classic was his first start over 1 1/8 miles.

“He ran to the level you’re looking to see him run to have fun and make some money,” Koriner said.

Big Macher, the winner of the $126,000 Cal Cup Sprint over six furlongs, is likely to stay in one-turn races, trainer Richard Baltas said.

Susans Express will stay on turf after winning the $201,500 Cal Cup Oaks for 3-year-old fillies over a mile. Co-owner and breeder Ed Delaney praised the work of trainer Jorge Periban, who won his first stakes in the United States in the Cal Cup Oaks. Susans Express paid $132.40 as the longest shot in a field of 14.

“He’s done a great job,” Delaney said of Periban. “I think we’ll leave her on turf. She’s a different filly on the turf than the dirt.”

Ciao Bella Luna will be pointed for the $100,000 Irish O’Brien Stakes on the hill-side turf course March 15 as a possible prep for the Grade 1, $300,000 Madison Stakes over seven furlongs at Keeneland on April 12, trainer Peter Miller said. Ciao Bella

Luna won the $126,500 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint on Saturday.

Electric Eddie, who was pulled up in the Cal Cup Derby with a condylar fracture to his left foreleg, is scheduled to undergo surgery Monday to insert stabilizing screws, trainer Ben Cecil said.

“The prognosis is good,” Cecil said. “He won’t race again. He should be a riding horse or something like that.”

Electric Eddie suffered damage to a sesa-moid, but Cecil said that does not require surgery. Initially, he feared the worst when Electric Eddie was pulled up in the final furlong.

“When I walked on the track, I thought we’d have to put him down,” he said. “The only thing they’ll operate on is the condy-lar. It will have three or four screws, I’m not sure of the exact amount.”

Owned by Paul and Zillah Reddam, Elec-tric Eddie was winless in eight starts and earned $122,080 during his racing career. He was second in two stakes last fall – the Golden State Juvenile for California-breds and the Real Quiet Stakes against open company.

Top Billing gave every indication that he will be a major player on the road to the Kentucky Derby this season when he rallied from last to a very impressive 2 3/4-length victory over the well-regarded Surfing U S A in Saturday’s fourth race at Gulfstream Park.

The victory was the second in three starts for Top Billing, a son of Curlin who suffered his only setback when beaten a neck by another leading Derby prospect, Commissioner, going 1 1/8 miles in a simi-lar first-level allowance here earlier this month.

With jockey Joel Rosario aboard, Top Billing dropped about 10 lengths off the early pace of Surfing U S A before launch-ing his rally leaving the backstretch. Top Billing was forced to race four wide while continuing his run into the stretch, over-took the leader at the head of the lane, and then gradually edged well clear. Top Bill-ing’s final time of 1:42.66 was less than a second off the 1 1/16-mile track record set Dec. 22 by the older horse River Seven. He received a Beyer Speed Figure of 90.

“That was pretty impressive,” said Shug McGaughey, who also trains Derby contenders Honor Code and Mr Speaker. “I was watching the race on TV, and all I could see was his number, the 2, was a lot further back than I wanted him to be. He’s learning. I thought this was a power-ful race today. He ate the dirt today even though Joel took him out away from them, but I told him in the future, if you make him, he’ll run up in there.”

McGaughey chuckled when asked what might be next for Top Billing while standing in the winner’s circle alongside co-owner Bill Farish.

“Obviously, there won’t be another allow-ance race for him, so somewhere along the line we’ll have to put our heads together and see what we want to do,” McGaughey said. “The one thing we’re not going to do is overcook him early. We’ll just have to wait and see how he comes out of this. I was a little nervous about running him back in three weeks, but he came out of his last race well and trained well. The one thing is this horse has a good mind, so if we do have to send him somewhere, it won’t be a problem.”

General a Rod preps for FountainTrainer Mike Maker opted to skip Satur-

day’s Grade 2 Holy Bull with his Gulf-stream Park Derby winner, General a Rod, to await the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth here next month. So, instead of running Satur-day afternoon, General a Rod breezed five furlongs in the morning, completing the distance in 1:01.06 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.61.

“He’s always been a great work horse, and he continues to train impressively,” Maker said when asked about Saturday’s work. “He had a semi-work last week, galloped out strong when seeing some horses in front of him, and did it in hand. I figured the Holy Bull would be trying to cram in too many races in too short a

period of time, so we’ll just sit this one out and wait for the Fountain of Youth.”

Five-furlong breeze for Groupie DollGroupie Doll continued to progress

toward what will be the last start of her racing career in the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie here Feb. 9 when she breezed a solid five furlongs in 1:00.89 shortly after the first renovation break Saturday. Groupie Doll, a two-time Eclipse Award winner, completed the final quarter in 23.78 seconds without the need of urging before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.20.

“We wanted to have a little easier work this week, without pushing her,” trainer Buff Bradley said. “Last week, she saw some company in front of her and ran them down.”

BarBara D. livingston Top Billing validated high expectations with a rallying 2 3/4-length win in a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said cham-pion Will Take Charge is “on target” for the Grade 1, $500,000 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 9 after the horse worked six furlongs from the gate Sunday at his base of Oaklawn Park. The race will be his first start at age 4. Will Take Charge closed out his champion-ship 3-year-old season with a win in the Grade 1 Clark at Churchill Downs on Nov. 29.

Will Take Charge went in 1:14.80 under regular exercise rider Rudy Quevedo. He is to be ridden in the Donn by Luis Saez, who was aboard for the Clark as well as for the horse’s runner-up finish in the Grade 1, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Clockers on Sunday had Will Take Charge’s opening three-eighths in 36.40 seconds and the half-mile in 49.40.

“We were just trying to get a little more condition on him,” Lukas said. “He hadn’t run in two months, so we asked him to do a little bit more. We kicked him out of the gates, sharpened him a little bit. I was real pleased with it. I think we’re right on target.”

Lukas, who had been working to make suitable flight arrangements from Arkan-sas to Florida for Will Take Charge, said Sunday the horse will van to Gulfstream. Will Take Charge is to ship seven to eight days in advance of the race. Lukas said he has been pleased with the horse’s prepara-

tion for the Donn, which includes a five-furlong work in 1:00.60 on Jan. 20 and a bullet breeze at the same distance in 1:02 on Jan. 12.

“If I had to run him today, I think I wouldn’t change anything,” Lukas said. “I really feel comfortable where I’m at. He’s

doing very, very well.”Will Take Charge will race this year for

Willis Horton and Three Chimneys LLC. He was named champion 3-year-old male of 2013 for a campaign that included wins in the Travers, Pennsylvania Derby, and Rebel Stakes.
