What’s “Differential Fluid”? Why Change It? The differential is a component in all cars and is designed to compensate
for the difference in distance the inner wheels and outer wheels travel as
the car goes around a corner. Power from the engine is distributed to
compensate on the turn. In a rear-wheel-drive car, the differential has its
own housing and lubrication. Differential fluid is a thick, dark oil
usually heavier than 80 weight. Front-drive cars typically integrate the
differential in the transmission housing and share the same fluid. So
your car may not even have dedicated differential fluid! (Now that you
know … please feel free to ask us if you have it!)
The differential oil lubricates the ring and pinion gears that transfer
power from the driveshaft to the wheel axles. If your car is fitted with a
limited-slip differential, it also keeps all the moving parts in that
assembly healthy. Changing this oil is just as important as changing
your engine's oil, and for the same reason. Metal-to-metal contact wears
down surfaces and creates heat from friction, which inevitably weakens
the gears and leads to failure. Article compiled from Popular Mechanics

The Funny Bone Sensitivity and Efficiency…
The room was full of pregnant
women with their partners. The
instructor coached, “Ladies,
remember that exercise is good for
you. Walking is especially
beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic
muscles and will make delivery
that much easier. Just take several
stops and stay on a soft surface like
grass or a path.”
She looked at the men in the room,
“and Gentlemen, remember –
you’re in this together – it wouldn’t
hurt you to go walking with her.”
The room got very quiet as the men
absorbed this info.
Then a man at the back of the room
slowly raised his hand.
“Yes?” asked the Instructor.
“I was just wondering if it would
be all right if she carries a golf bag
while we walk?”

How Charlie Brown Made The Zamboni Famous Charlie Brown famously said there are three things in life that people like to
stare at: 1. a Zamboni clearing the ice, 2. a crackling fire and 3. a flowing
stream. And Charlie Brown was right. In the 1950’s when the Zamboni first
visited Chicago Stadium along with ice skater Sonja Henie’s show, the promoter
feared that people would watch the Zamboni rather than go to the concession
stands at intermission.

6 Easiest Houseplants to Care For
When all the holiday decorations go away, the house can seem a
little drab. It’s the perfect time to lavish your houseplants with love.
And if you need to vent about your family from the holidays, they
love when you talk to them (the perfect silent confidant)!
6. Diffenbachia – beautiful variegated leaves make this plant easy
and attractive. Likes moist soil and medium to low light.
5. Aloe – loves sunlight and dry soil (perfect if you forget to water!)
4. Pothos – a natural air purifier (even removing formaldehyde),
likes all kinds of light, temperatures and somewhat dry soil.
3. Jade plant – grows slowly so it can live for decades! Loves bright
light and dry soil.
2. Rubber tree – can grow big to fill a dead space in a room if you
don’t trim it or can grow short and shrub-like if you do. Thrives in
all light levels, room temperatures and likes its soil dry.
1. Heart-shaped philodendron – the #1 indoor plant because it likes
all light levels, temperatures and dry soil. And it can be bushy or
have long traveling vines.

My Heat Doesn’t Seem Very Hot …
What’s Really the Deal?
It may seem backwards but the heat works in conjunction with your engine's cooling system…
#1 Heating and cooling work together
The function of the cooling system is to remove heat from the engine. It does this for the most part by sending the anti-freeze that got heated up by the engine to the radiator located in the front of the car. The radiator cools the anti-freeze by allowing the outside air to blow across the anti-freeze (that’s why it’s in the front of the car – to get the most cool air). Then the anti-freeze is sent back to the engine to do it again. Now, the heating part. Think of the heater core as a small radiator located inside the dashboard of your vehicle. When the heater is NOT on, anti-freeze passes through the heater core on its way to the radiator. Anti-freeze is constantly being circulated throughout the engine, radiator, and (yes) the heater core regardless of whether you have the heater dashboard switch on.
#2 Your heater core has anti-freeze circulating through it even when the heat is not “on”
When the heater IS turned on by the driver, a little door opens to the heater core area in the dashboard. A small fan (commonly referred to as the a/c fan or blower) comes on to blow air across the hot heater core into the duct work of the dashboard and into the interior of your car.
That’s all pretty cool, right? So what does it mean when it’s not blowing hot? It could be a leak.
#3 Heater core leaks come from contaminants in the system, like air or rust
When the heater core leaks, it is leaking anti-freeze – NOT WATER! Because it’s in the dashboard, it will usually leak inside the car on the passenger floorboard under the carpet.
This is really important because … IT IS DANGEROUS TO BREATHE ANTI-FREEZE
So here’s what to look out for: 1. Wetness on the passenger-side floorboard 2. Sweet (chemical) odor 3. Greasy film on the INSIDE of the windows
Because the heater core has anti-freeze running through it all the time, having a leak is NOT related to how much you use the heat. You could have the leak anytime!! But … it’s a big risk in winter when you have your windows up all the time, your heat is on AND you’re breathing air inside the car ONLY!
Let’s make sure you’re not breathing in anti-freeze this winter!!
Heating System Flush Special We will flush out the anti-freeze in the system
(we’ll be able to tell a lot just by what the fluid looks like,
not just on top in the radiator but ALL of it)
Then we’ll replace the anti-freeze and check for any leaks

January Client of the Month- Bud Nelson
Bud Nelson was born in 1933 and has lead a full and interesting life these past 80 years.
Bud left high school in Dallas, TX to enlist in the Marine Corps in early 1951 and landed in Korea seven months later, shortly after turning eighteen. He spent seven months on the lines and was discharged in 1954. He graduated Louisiana Tech in 1959 and worked for The Kroger Company then for General Motors in Detroit, MI. Bud retired from GM in 1992, after working there 31 years. He is a widower with two grown children and one college-‐aged grandson. In 2000, Bud moved to Venice, FL.
“I moved here for the music,” said Bud.
Bud is passionate about music and has played guitar and tenor banjo with several Dixieland/Ragtime groups in the Venice area, including playing with the Greg Allen & Friends band.
“I’m not a trained musician,” Bud said. “I don’t read music, I just play from memory after hearing a song. I probably know 300 to 400 numbers from memory. I’m pretty persistent and I’ve learned rhythm.”
Bud has played banjo or guitar indoors and outdoors at Snook Haven for about 10 years.
“When the county took over Snook Haven, we lost our gig there,” Bud said. “Greg Allen died last year and I’m 80 years old, so I’m
not looking for a new gig.”
Bud keeps active by hosting Saturday morning music workshops, where musicians can learn and jam together. He also does repair work on banjos, ukuleles, guitars and other string instruments.
“I sell some of my banjo on consignment at Troll Music,” Bud said.
Bud has been a customer of 1 Stop Car and Truck Repair since moving to Venice in 2000.
“When I first moved here, I got a flyer from 1 Stop for a free oil change, so I came in,” Bud said. “I liked their work so I had them do additional maintenance. When I had to have a complete engine replacement done, I checked around to compare other prices and then decided to stick with 1 Stop. I’m glad I did because they did a perfect job.”
Bud admits he’s always been critical of repair shops because of his knowledge and experience with GM, but he’s found a repair shop he can trust with 1 Stop.
“I’ve found that John and Rich are good people and they honor their word,” Bud said. “They’re not the cheapest repair shop out there, but they offer a reasonable value for the work they do and they always do a good job.”
Bud appreciates the honesty he receives from the 1 Stop Car and Truck Repair staff.
“I have 147,000 miles on my van and all the regular maintenance has been done by 1 Stop,” Bud said. “The last three times I’ve been there I’ve told Rich or John to replace the brakes on my van and each time they’ve told me my van doesn’t need the brakes replaced yet but they’d be sure to tell me when it did.”
“At 80 years old, it’s important to me to have a car repair shop I can trust. I’m referring a lot of friends to 1 Stop.”
