"All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects." - Mustapha Mond (Chapter 3, Page 54)

Similar to how religion and alcohol can give one a “natural high” and intoxication, soma can give the user both without the negative side effects of alcohol and religion.

"Take a holiday from reality whenever you like, and come back without so much as a headache or a mythology." - Mustapha Mond (Chapter 3, Page 54)

Mond encourages the usage of the drug saying that whenever you feel upset, you should pop soma. He says the usage of the drug does not cause any problematic symptoms.

"And do remember that a gramme is better than a damn.” (Chapter 3, pg. 55)

In the society of Brave New World, the majority of the people believe that taking soma is a better way to deal with problems that cause frustration.

From a safe distance and still rubbing his buttocks, “‘Benighted fool!”’ shouted the man from The Fordian Science Monitor, “‘why don't you take soma?”’ (Chapter 18, Page 251)

John is under emotional stress from facing the reality of the World State. He is seen as a stupid savage, and in response to his violent actions, he is told to take soma. When the members of the World State are faced with any kind of passionate emotion or action, they immediately turn to soma to return to a state of peace.

‘“Why you don’t take soma when you have these dreadful ideas of yours. You’d forget all about them. And instead of feeling miserable, you’d be jolly. So jolly,’ she repeated and smiled...” (pg 92)

In Chapter 6, Lenina and Bernard are in a helicopter and Bernard stops the helicopter above the channel. Bernard tells Lenina that the emptiness of the water makes him feel like and individual.

• A study by the Centers for Disease Control showed that more American women suffer from prescription drug abuse.

• The CDC has found that more women go “doctor shopping.”

• Still, both men and women struggle with prescription drug abuse.

• This problem has become an epidemic all over America, and numbers of those who suffer from it continues to rise.

The article shows great concern for the issue of drug abuse. The writer, Jackie Glass, is a court justice who has seen the large numbers of people who have fallen into prescription drug abuse. She also emphasizes her resentment towards those who provoke drug abuse such as doctors who offer easy access to prescription drugs. Glass labels the issue as an epidemic and urges the state and federal government to make changes to prevent such an addiction to prescription drugs.

C O N C L U S I O NIn Huxley’s Brave New World, the drug, soma, is constantly used by the mass

majority to create a permanent state of contentment. In contemporary society, drugs of any kind are used to obtain a temporary experience. We have drug abuse because that temporary experience is addictive to the point where users strive to have a permanent experience, like that of Brave New World. However, drug abuse in contemporary society does not solve issues in the manner that Brave New World does. Instead, it is a downward spiral for the users. Contemporary society strives to maintain a state of permanent contentment like Brave New World, but it only causes more struggles, and produces the opposite result where many are damaged by drug abuse, not content.
