Being a Brave New Works Wrangler (as described by Annette Car-michael), has been an honour, a delight and at times, a little like holding jelly. As a relative newcomer to Denmark I have not been present for the twenty two years of BNW or a witness to the com-munity’s enthusiasm for this, their very own festival.

“The Creation of Now” is a living example of the willingness of the Denmark community to be engaged with the creative process, while “The Confidence Man” demonstrates how Denmark cre-atives can mature from this platform, like the Pepper sisters show.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being, as another local described, ‘ten-tacular’, the spectacular process of mustering all the BNW tenta-cles into a cohesive festival. I could not do this alone and on that note I would like to thank all the wonderful team at Denmark Arts, staff and Board, who make magic happen. I especially would like to thank Artistic Director Vivienne Robertson for encouraging me to ‘have a go’. To everyone involved, performers, artists and audience, a great big thank you. It couldn’t happen without you. This is your Festival.

The Creation of Now is a magical performance that weaves dance, story, haunting violin and visual art into an immersive experience for the audience.

We follow the journey of omo, an ancient child, who is asked by the elders of his world to seek ‘Now’. omo’s last breath must con-tain the qualities of ‘Now’ to bring the colours of the world alive.

The Creation of Now is Annette Carmichael’s most ambitious community performance created over twelve months with more than 100 participants.

art not waste

oPENING FRIDAY 6 NoV, 5PM Nibbles, Wine & Live Music with The New TraditionalistsExHIBITIoN ALL WEEKEND 10-4PM RSL Hall

Art Not Waste is a joint Denmark Arts and Denmark Tip Shop sponsored exhibition of work by artists from the Denmark com-munity who use waste or found objects for their art practice. This may include old books, bits of plastic, tumble dryer lint through to large scale sculptural works in metal.

The aim of the exhibition is to heighten awareness of wasted re-sources by creating art from the town’s waste.

The show will be great fun and will demonstrate the important message to REPAIR, REUSE & CREATE and toembrace our planet’s precious and finite resources.

Denmark Artist Bob Mills presents Loss of Innocence, his first solo show for some years. In this series of works Bob focuses on abuse - not his own cry for help, but rath-er work which he hopes others will find meaningful. It is hoped that these works will encourage those who see them to get sup-port when they need it. Exploring loss of innocence today, he is also able to come full circle by coming to terms with his own loss many years ago, in the burning, bomb-swept streets of London during his childhood.
