The Story Behind our Identity The New IT Sligo Logo

Our logo is drawn from and inspired by the natural beauty and distinctiveness of Sligo. We have a rich heritage of beautiful, lush countryside, windswept and breathtaking seascapes and the awe inspiring sweep of Ben Bulben. Sligo is an international destination indelibly associated with the writings of W B Yeats.

Our new IT Sligo brand is designed to embrace these positive associations and embed them with institutional values of friendship, welcome, freshness, the quality of life and opportunities we offer on campus and the close knit community focus that we have encouraged.

The IT Sligo logo has been updated to give it a fresh, clean, modern feel and to reflect the qualities that the Institute has to offer.

The identity covers all aspects of how we communicate with internal and external audiences. Our aim is to ensure we present IT Sligo to our best advantage in all our communications.

Please ensure that you check with the President’s office or nominee before you sign off on any use of the Identity.

The IT Sligo logo has been specially designed and should not be altered. It incorporates elements from the previous identity to retain consistency and the recognizable ‘sweep’ inspired by Ben Bulben that is indelibly associated with the Institute and the Region.

ThE COLOURS

Using a colour palette of stone blue that echoes the distinctive natural hues of Sligo and its immediate hinterland, the logo retains the symbol element from the previous IT Sligo logo. The stone blue/green palette is representative of the dark coloured stone of Ben Bulben peak, sweeping down to the lush green countryside and onwards again into the blue sea. Sligo has been described as a gateway between land and sea, between north-west and west.

ThE TYPOgRAPhY AnD ThE SWEEP

The typography is contemporary. Used here the colours integrate the distinct IT element with the Sligo element in a redrawn version of the sweep that has previously represented Ben Bulben, the Salmon, the flame, the ‘S’ of Sligo. here the elements of IT Sligo and IT are integrated via the distinct sweep to draw together town, county and town in a synergistic way. It is above all, fresh modern and energetic and is simple, yet easily recognizable. The Irish version of the name is integrated in the same colour palette.

To ensure visual consistency, the logo must never be adjusted, redrawn or modified in any way.

The logo should be given prominence on all IT Sligo publications and other published materials, in printed and electronic format.

The President’s Office is responsible for managing the Visual Identity programme. Any queries should be addressed to: Joe Delaney, Reprographic Office, IT Sligo, Ash Lane, Sligo, Ireland. Phone: +353 (0) 71 9155207Fax: +353 (0) 71 9160934Email: [email protected]

Versions of the Institute logo contained in the guide are available also from Joe Delaney, see details above.

Using the IT Sligo IdentityThe Name of the Institute

Old Logos

The main version of the IT Sligo logo is the full colour option (figure 1). Use this version where possible, and on a light background.

The new IT Sligo logo has been designed in a landscape format.

A reversed out version has been created (figure 2). This version has been created for use on dark, coloured or photographic backgrounds. Only use this reversed out version, and please do not create your own alterations.

Care should be taken when placing the logo on a photographic background that it is clearly legible. Lighter images allow the opportunity to use the colours from our palette. Always try to choose a colour that is sympathetic to those within the selected images (figure 3).

Do not create you own colour alterations to the logo, such as changing the colour of the typography. (figure 4)

The name of the Institute to be used on promotional and marketing materials is IT Sligo. The Irish version is An Institiúid Teicneolaíochta, Sligeach. This includes use on addresses, body copy and other uses. On other official materials, when approved by the President’s Office, the name Institute of Technology, Sligo may be used.

All old IT Sligo logos are gradually being phased out, so please use the new version when designing/creating or printing any new material.

MInIMUM SIzE - REPRODUCTIOn

Where the IT Sligo logo is situated on a page, poster, stand or any other piece of design work or internal document, it must have prominence on the page. Therefore we have stipulated a minimum size to ensure the legibility of the logo.

note that when the logo is reduced in size and used below 55mm the Irish version of the name becomes unreadable. In this instance, a special version of the logo has been developed without the Irish version of the name. We believe it is better to create an exception to the rule, rather than leave it to chance that the Irish language is unreadable. note that this version is OnLY permitted in this eventuality.

13

MInIMUM SIzE - DOCUMEnTATIOn/WEB

The minimum size when placed on an A5 page is 43mm in width (figure 1). The minimum size for A4 is 59mm (figure 2) and 84mm for A3 (figure 3).

Where the logo appears on a large piece of design, such as a pop-up stand (standard size 800mm x 2000mm), the logo should go no smaller than 230mm (figure 4). This is to ensure legibility of the logo from a distance.Where the logo is to be placed into an online or digital environment, the logo should go no smaller than 284 pixels in width (figure 5).

These are the absolute minimum sizes, and where possible we recommend that you use the logo in a larger size than this.

Alternative Typeface

If you do not have franklin gothic we recommend you use Arial which is available on most computers. Only use regular, italic and bold versions.

body copy Typeface

Our preferred point size for body copy on all publications and printed material is 10 point on 13 point leading. however, we are aware that certain documents may require larger text and, where this is the case, we recommend that text is set no larger than 12 point on 14 point leading.

We are also aware that there may be certain cases where the text may need to be smaller, such as advertisements in newspapers etc. If this is the case please go no smaller than 7 point to ensure legibility.

Stationery

The IT Sligo logo is to be placed at the top left hand corner of all stationery to keep a consistent look throughout. franklin gothic is the chosen typeface on stationery.

SUB BRANDS: SChOOLS AnD OThER UnITS WIThIn ThE InSTITUTE

With a number of schools and other units within the Institute, it is crucial that all external communication is branded consistently. This helps maintain the strength of the IT Sligo family and will ensure that each unit receives maximum benefit as part of the Institute.

you should never try to reproduce the logotype for a unit yourself. The President’s Office will arrange for any sub unit branding should it be required. Business
