PARKS FOUNDATION OF BURLINGTONPhilanthropy, Stewardship & Partnership: for the Love of Our Parks.

The Foundation is a separate entity, independent from the City of Burlington and the Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department, formed as a tax-exempt non-profit charity governed by its board of directors. Its purpose is to seek opportunities to enhance parks assets and programs through specific initiatives. It is not designed to fill budgetary shortfalls in the Department’s operating expenses that would normally be the responsibility of the City. The Foundation seeks stewardship and philanthropic opportunities for self-sustaining support, including in-kind contributions that will not impose a burden on the City of Burlington’s Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department’s annual operating budget. The Foundation applies for grants for which government agencies are not eligible. It solicits and accepts planned gifts that provide support for future improvements to our city’s recreational resources. As an entity separate from the City, the Foundation invests and manages endowment funds.

To learn more and to make a tax-deductible donaton, please visit: www.parksfoundationburlington.org

e-mail [email protected] or call Board Chair John Bossange at 802.578.7468.

The 8-mile Burlington Bike Path connects our parks and waterfront including North Beach, Leddy Park, the Urban Reserve, Waterfront Park, Perkins Pier, and Oakledge Park. The path is our largest multi-use recreational facility supporting cyclists, runners, walkers and beyond.

Phase 1a construction, from Perkins Pier through Waterfront Park, was completed in the summer of 2015. Improvements included the realignment of the path through Waterfront Park, the formalization of a former eroding maintenance road with drivable grass pavers, the improvement of the Maple, King and College Street intersections, and the visual designation of the path in busy locations, executed through green paint.

Phase 1b construction through the Urban Reserve, slated for spring 2016 construction, will realign the Bike Path proximate to the lake for improved user experience, remove the majority of the old industrial concrete and asphalt remnants and former path alignment, replace previously impervious surfaces with vegetation and improve storm water management, bring the path up to current standards, refresh the dog park, and introduce pause places at specific locations.

Approved by voters in 2008, Penny for Parks is BPRW’s primary capital resource for park improvements and is supported by a dedicated tax. PFP funds are reserved exclusively for parks capital improvement needs. Eligible projects include the repair, renovation, replacement, or expansion of existing park facilities as well as the construction of new facilities in existing parks. Derived from the Grand List, the average annual PFP allocation is ~$350,000. Targeted improvements include playgrounds, courts, athletic fields, park facilities, standard equipment replacement, emergent/urgent projects, and staffing support.

BPRW welcomes your park improvement suggestions! So, if you have any ideas, please let us know. Complete the online form or request a copy via mail. Park improvement suggestions are accepted year-round, with an interim deadline of December 31st for consideration in the upcoming fiscal year. BPRW staff then reviews, rates and prioritizes the parks project list, including all public project request, each spring.

Highlights of recently completed projects include: Oakledge Park restroom renovation, Starr Farm Park playground replacement and expansion, court & field improvements, and improvements at Roosevelt Park.

Recreation & Nutrition Drop-In ProgramJune 20 – August 12Monday-Friday | 11A-2PFranklin Square, Riverside Apartments, Baird Center, Roosevelt Park

This is a drop-in style recreation program that takes place at four sites across the city. There are no fees or enrollment required and all staff-led activities are free. The Burlington Summer Meals Program provides free lunch and snack for kids daily and additionally kids take weekly field trips. A growing number of families are in need of this program. Family food budgets that rely on school breakfast and lunch are stretched in the summer and put children at risk of food insecurity. We believe a comprehensive approach is necessary to address the increasing number of families facing this risk. In response, we not only offer the same meals that children receive at school, but we are also offering nutrition education, fitness activities and opportunities to garden.

WHAT WE’VE DONE TO HELPIn 2015, the program served over 3,855 free lunches to over 200 Burlington children, averaging 98 lunches served daily.

ACTIVITIES OFFERED

Physical Activity

Nutrition Education

Parent Involvement

Community Resources

Field TripsDesigned to help participants gain a greater sense of community. Coordinators at each site collaborate to offer opportunities to discover Burlington’s beautiful parks and helpful community resources. Past trips included visits to the ECHO Lake Aquarium, Mazza’s berry picking, swimming at North Beach, reading at the Fletcher Free Library and more.

2016 GOALS

GardeningThrough lessions from experienced horticulturalists, the children plan, plant, maintain and harvest the local garden at the BACG site at Star Farm Park. These activities connect the children to their environment and the food they eat.

Nutrition ActivitiesThe program’s comprehensive approach to nutrition education is comprised of daily hands on activities and nutritious meals, provided by the Burlington School Food Project that meet the USDA’s Child Nutrition Guidelines. Their mission is to connect students and their families with whole, fresh, and local foods to improve student learning about nutrition and the health of our community.

This project is made possible through

collaboration with the Burlington Housing Authority.

BPRW’s only recreation center, the Miller Center, was a former national guard armory that was gifted to the City of Burlington by the State. In 2008, the facility underwent a complete renovation and opened to the public. The center offers a full-size high school gymnasium with basketball hoops, pickleball and basketball lines, a fitness studio, a community room with audio-video capabilities and state-licensed kitchen, kids room, teen center, day care, and an art room.

The Miller Center has several spaces available to rent for a variety of activities - sports teams, businesses, private parties, conferences, meetings, etc. The Miller Center is staffed 7 days a week, has free Wi-Fi and plenty of free parking. Go to enjoyburlington.com for details or call (802) 540-1058 to reserve space.

Activities include pickleball, basketball, fitness classes, camps, fencing, indoor soccer, gymnastics, sign language, art, music, dance, and a free morning walking program. The Miller Center is also ADA accessible and home of the Vermont Chargers who practice and compete in powered wheelchair soccer matches. We are always looking for new and different program ideas to offer the community – got suggestions or a talent you want to share? Contact us at (802) 540-1058 or email Susan Carter, Rec. Program Specialist, [email protected].

Many partners and user groups take advantage of all that Miller has to offer. The Sara Holbrook Teen Center, provides free after school programming for middle school students as well as summer camps. In a city with a shortage of quality child care, dedicated space in the building was recently renovated specifically for a day care tenant. Frog & Toad Child Care & Learning Center offers state-licensed and STAR-rated child care for approximately 30 infants and children.

MCHAKAMCHAKA JOGGING Ages 18+ Resident $90 / Non-Resident $100Miller Art RoomMchakamchaka is a communal jogging/singing tradition from Tanzania. We will spend half of each class learning joyful call and response songs, and half the class jogging to them. You do NOT have to be a runner to take this class! The footsteps keep the rhythm. The songs are simple, joyous, and lend themselves to lots of fun harmonies. The jogging isn’t strenuous, since we go at a pace that allows us to have air in our lungs to sing, though you can get more exercise by lifting your legs higher. Instructor: Ari Elbaum.

WATERFRONT PARK & THE BOATHOUSEIn 1988, the City constructed the BURLINGTON COMMUNITY BOATHOUSE, designed by Marcel Beaudin and modeled after the 1887

Lake Champlain Yacht Club (which was located in the same place). At the time, it was the only true waterside public access on the northern waterfront. Construction of Waterfront Park and the Promenade followed in 1991. Waterfront park offers open space to play, take in the lakefront views along the boardwalk and access the Bike Path. The site is also host to many events throughout the year, making it Burlington’s premier outdoor venue.

BATTERY PARKBattery Park, at the top of Battery Street, is a great place to relax, take in the view and bring the kids to the playground. Built as a military camp during the War of 1812, American gunners, successfully defended Battery Park against an attack by a British squadron in 1813. A decorative cannon in Battery Park commemorates this historic battle. Other noteworthy monuments within the park include a statue of Vermont’s famous civil war General William W. Wells and a red oak sculpture of “Greylock” after a renowned Abenaki Indian chief. Not only does the park offer some of the most spectacular waterfront views, the BAND SHELL, which is home to the Thursday night concert series for six weeks in the summer. The Burlington Concert Band, now in its 165th season performs free Sunday Evening Concerts. For rentals and use of Battery Park, call 865-7247.

SKATEPARK & WATERFONT ACCESS NORTH The new world-class Skatepark will be open for its first full year of operation. Located north of the Moran Building, now with parking available. Waterfront Access North construction will continue in 2016 as the Bike Path project moves north to realign the bike path, update the dog park and add several pause places.

OFF-LEASH DOG AREASDogs are allowed in all city parks but must be leashed at all times. Dogs are prohibited from designated beaches and picnic areas. Owners are always responsible for cleaning up after their pets! Help keep the parks and the lake clean.

STARR FARM PARKThis facility is located just west of the bike path at Starr Farm Park. Open from April 1 to Sept. 30 from 8A to 8P and from Oct. 1 to March 31 from 8A to 6P or dark, whichever occurs first. Throughout the year on Sundays, the park opens at 11A and closes at 6P or dark, whichever occurs first. Volunteers are needed to help monitor the sites, remove trash and inform users of park rules. Please call 865-7247 to help with this effort.

WATERFRONT/URBAN RESERVEThis facility is located north of the new Skatepark. The area is open from sunrise to sunset, year-round. The site will be remodeled this summer as part of the Bike Path Rehabilitation project, but will remain open while construction is ongoing.
