ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSIONIn September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood repre-sentatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions:The overall mission is to celebrate diversity . of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECTAll of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASISThe Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, trans-forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTIONThe Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, part-nerships, and our own productions.

The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is jointly operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks & Recreation and the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I have taken on the mantle of president at a difficult time, as the Park Board is looking to replace the current and long-standing Joint Operating Agreement with the Roundhouse Association. We support the goal of making all community centres more equitable and accessible, especially for low-income members of our community, and we are striving to ensure that a new agreement will not negatively affect the operation of the Roundhouse.I invite each person who is involved with the Roundhouse to become educated about the issue. You are our community and we are your centre. We will be looking for new people to join our Board and that is just one of the many ways that you can contribute to the Roundhouse. This is shaping up to be an exciting season. Be sure to check out the Bricks 4 Kidz program that will involve kids building projects using LEGO. We have expanded Gardening/Horticulture to include four great new programs. We will also offer some exciting workshops for parents this spring. Hullabaloo: BC's Youth Spoken Word Festival, a Roundhouse partnership, as well as the free exhibit Speaking from our Art will showcase youth art. Be a part of The World Umbrella Dance event at the Vancouver Art Gallery by coming to the rehearsal at the Roundhouse in April. Then come out in May to see the 126th anniversary celebration of the arrival of Engine 374 to Vancouver. We will be hosting our 4th annual Vancouver Draw Down in June and Picnic in the Park in August. There is a lot see and do at the Roundhouse! The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre is proud to have been recognized as the best community centre in Vancouver for three years in a row. Thank you to all our staff, volunteers, and members for getting us there, and we look forward to making it four years in 2013.Craig Giles President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Association
