BOWING BAROQUE Sunday, September 29, 2013 3:00 p.m. ~ Jacques Lee Wood, cellist Mr. Wood, a recent graduate of the Yale School of Music now serving as an artist-in- residence at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, will perform a program of works for un- accompanied cello by J. S. Bach, Giovanni Gabrielli, and Gaspar Cassado, along with a new work, Arches, for cello and laptop computer, by Jacob Cooper. Mr. Wood’s involvement in developing the early music program at Yale, as well as his playing in the orchestra for the Bach series offered by Trinity Church, Wall Street, New York, will lead to a historically-informed performance that will enlighten the intellect and inspire the heart. In addition to his concert performance, Mr. Wood will participate in the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Center Church that day. Admission will be $10 per person (2-for-1 with the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s “Let’s Go Arts!” card), received at the door. FRIDAY NIGHT FRIGHT Friday, October 25, 2013 7:00 p.m. ~ Rob Velella, as Edgar Allan Poe In the works of Edgar Al- lan Poe, the dead often do not stay dead; thus, the au- thor himself will come back to life – through the body of lit- erary historian Rob Velella – for an evening of reading and audience engagement appropriate for all ages. Rob Velella specializes in American literature of the 19 th century. In addition to Poe, he has brought to life other great authors; namely, Henry Wadsworth and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This presentation is part of Mr. Velella’s third annual reading tour at historic cemeteries; e.g., Hartford’s Ancient Burying Ground, adjacent to Center Church; throughout the northeastern United States. Admission is free, though donations ($10 suggested, per person) will be received at the door.

The Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet

Founded in 2002 by member Charley Gerard, the New York City-based Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet, as its name implies, is a group linked by a sense of humor and a unique sound. Their style can best be described as a Jazz-Latin fusion that employs elements of Swing and Classical music. The listener will

travel to numerous ve-nues and eras: from New Orleans jazz clubs to the Swinging Sixties; from the coffee house Bach

knew in Leipzig to the pages of poetry and popular culture of the Beat Generation. In addition to its concert performance, the Broken Reed Saxophone Quartet will participate in the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Center Church that same day. Admission will be $10 per person (2-for-1 with the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s “Let’s Go Arts!” card), received at the door.

PARKING

Free parking is available for all Music and the Arts at Center Church events. Spaces on the streets are free after 6:00 p.m. weekdays, and there is no charge at any time Saturday and Sunday. The Travelers Tower garage (entrance via the ramp down from Atheneum Square North) is available for events on Sundays (please use the attendant call button to inform the attendant that you are going to the concert at Center Church). The “Gold Building” garage (entrance on Pearl Street) is available weekdays from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. (bring the garage ticket with you to Center Church to have it validated).
