The 2015 Grads vs. Dads Hockey Game went to the Dads with a goal scored in the final seconds of what was a great game last Friday night (March 6) at the Midway arena.

The annual event is a major fundraiser for the BCSS grad class each year. The proceeds help them cover costs of their commencement and a dinner.

There was a mini-game at halftime played be-tween the senior novice team and the grads. The grads got smoked, even worse than the one-goal game with their parents.

Also at halftime, the fans participated in an air-plane toss and a puck shoot. With door prizes, raffles, a 50/50 and bake sale tables, everyone had

the opportunity to go home richer than they had ar-rived.

The 2015 BCSS grad class is looking for other opportunities to raise funds. There are a few extra speed bumps in the road to their goal this year. For one thing, the class is small, so there are fewer hands on deck to help with the work. Another thing that got in the way of this particular grad class was the fact the school year started two weeks late. So things had to be tweaked and reorganized and many things were pushed back a week or more.

If you know of any fund raising opportunities, the class could use please contact Pamela Storie at 250-449-2224.

The city released a statement at Monday night’s council meeting on the failed negotiations that would have brought a water bottling plant to the city. The negotiations took place dur-ing 2014 and, according to the state-ment, cost the city $27,700 in legal fees.

“Greenwood City Council is open for business to improve the economic development of the city,” said admin-istrator Robin Dalziel as he read the statement. He said that, over the past year, the city has been contacted by seven companies that were exploring mutually beneficial business opportu-nities.

“Protecting the assets and resources of the City of Greenwood for the resi-dents of Greenwood was foremost in council’s deliberations. The amount of water requested would have had a neg-ligible impact on the city’s aquifer and clauses were negotiated to protect the supply and pressure of the water sys-tem in emergency situations.”

According to the statement, the con-tract would have brought in $100,000 per year in addition to commercial property taxes. When asked later to clarify what the company would be re-ceiving for their $100,000, Dalziel said it would be paying for the distribution service supplying the water.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”~ Audrey Hepburn

Springis Near! And your garden is calling!is calling!is calling!Answer back with pruning tools, shovels, rakes and the perfect garden gloves.

Visit us before beginning your outdoor spring cleaning, and stock up now for the best garden seed selection.

Master Plan that was done in 2010 reported seven trillion litres of water per year refresh-ing the aquifer; and that the amount proposed for extraction by the plant was “not even close to one per cent.”

The statement also said, “The selling of capital assets of the city was considered with-in the proposed agreement.  Council is fully aware of the disclosure and procedural re-quirements of the Community Charter as it relates to the disposition of city-owned assets. This was written into the proposed contract.”

According to the statement, the last sig-nificant meeting between the two parties was in September 2014. “The new council sought confirmation of the intentions of the business party shortly after they were elected. As the business did not reply, this has released the City of Greenwood from the negotiations.”

Dalziel said the city now has a contract (format) that considers the rights of the city and the business as it relates to the provision of water for commercial purposes. “Coun-cil welcomes inquiries from businesses that would like to set up in Greenwood whether it is related to Greenwood water or other city resources.”

During question period at the end of the regular meeting, Jim Nathorst suggested that a request for proposal process should have been carried out on the water bottling plant proposal. He also questioned the  value  for money spent on the $27,000 legal bill for the project.

City supports requestNews briefs from the March 9 Greenwood

City Council meeting.West Boundary Road Rescue

Council voted to back a letter from Larry Bow-en, coordinator of West Boundary Road Rescue (WBRR), asking for support for their request for changes to provincial policy, which states, “Flag-ging is only authorized for ensuring the safety of the emergency services personnel involved in the removal of the subject(s). Once the subject(s) are safely extricated, flagging is no longer covered.”

Road rescue would like that changed so they are funded while flagging until a highways flag-ging crew is on scene. They also ask that coverage by WCB, accidental death and dismemberment, and liability insurance be expanded to cover road rescue groups until suitable traffic control, flag-ging from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is in place.

In the past WBRR has remained on scene pro-viding flagging for the safety of RCMP and am-bulance personnel.

West Boundary Community ForestCouncillor Lee Cudworth reported that the

West Boundary Community Forest, jointly owned by Greenwood and Midway, has applied for a cut-ting permit that would yield two years worth of cut in 2015—for a total of 46,000 cubic metres.

Council looking at economic development Greenwood will participate in two workshops

hosted by Community Futures Boundary in Grand Forks.

On the morning of March 18 Richard Toperc-zar, regional manager of economic development, tourism and skill training, will facilitate an eco-nomic development visioning workshop. Anoth-er session on land and economic development will take place on March 19.

City reserves land for seniors’ housingCouncil voted to reserve land for the proposed

seniors’ housing facility in Greenwood. The for-mer demo derby grounds as well as the lot lying to the north beyond the cul de sac have been identified. Any lands not used for the seniors’ fa-cility shall remain property of the city.

Bocce pit goes back for more quotesCouncil received a bid of over $29,000 for con-

struction of two bocce ball pits at the ball park. When Mayor Ed Smith called for a motion to pro-ceed with the project, resident Jim Nathorst inter-jected that the high project cost requires council to have more than one quote. Administrator Rob-in Dalziel explained that council has the option of rescinding the policy for individual projects. In the end, council decided to seek more quotes.

Legal suit against the city and councilDuring question period, Nathorst asked if the

legal bills for the court case files by former coun-cillor Barry Noll were covered by insurance or if the taxpayer would have to pay the cost. Noll al-leges that he was libelled in a press release issued by council on March 10, 2014.

Mayor and council did not make any com-ment on the case.

Dalziel told the meeting that Municipal By-law 807 states the city will pay the legal costs for councillors under certain circumstances. He

acknowledged however, that Bylaw 807 specifi-cally excludes indemnity in cases of defamation.

In other council news: The city passed a resolution to support the

Kettle River Management Plan. Council approved $1,800 to be budgeted for

2015 to cover costs of getting power back at the rink.

Council voted to establish a steering com-mittee to oversee the changes brought by the fire training standards.

Letters Policy

We all have this polite ritual that we go through when greeting others on our day. We ask, “How’s it going?” or maybe, “How are you today?” or perhaps a more formal, “How do you do?”

But it’s all pretty much a dance without substance? Most people recognize the question as a rhetorical one and give you a standard, benign answer. “Doing good, thanks! You?”

Some people have unique answers that they give every time. Take Wolfgang Schmidt up by Canyonveiw Bridge for instance. If you ever ask him how his day is going he will always reply, “Virtually perfect!” The day you ask him and he doesn’t say those exact words is the day you will know he’s not doing well.

But I changed things up a bit last week. For my morning greeting, instead of the usual in-quiry I asked people, “What do you know that’s real?” It seemed like a reasonable question.

The results were intriguing. Nearly everyone had a comeback at the tip of his or her tongue. It was the answer that they gave that deserves some atten-tion.

The majority of responses when I asked, “What do you know that’s real?” were simply, “Nothing.”

That is kind of frightening when you consider I hadn’t asked what they knew that was new, I had asked them what they knew that was real.

This has prompted me to reprioritize part of my own life. For one thing I have long had the intention of taking a defensive driving refresher course. The number of people who self-identified as knowing nothing about reality has given me reason to move that course up to the soonest date possible.

I did get some other interesting responses though. One person replied, “Absolutely nothing—I live in Midway, you know.”

When I asked someone else they said, “Oh I don’t know anything about that.” Making it sound like they had once considered reality as a lifestyle choice but opted for some-thing else.

Another told me, “Well if I can’t ad lib then I don’t really want to say anything.”

Obviously people are holding their reality cards pretty close to their chests and aren’t too likely to reveal much. Maybe reality is something that isn’t talked about in polite company, like politics or religion?

In my opinion though, the best answer that day was, “I am very much aware of what’s real—but you can’t quote me on that.”

At the end of the whole business I come away feeling better about my own sanity, though. After all, it seems that most folks are just as confused as I am about the whole

blasted thing.***

We are lucky the time change happens in the middle of the night. Especially the springtime one; you know, the one where we move the clocks forward an hour. Imagine the pandemonium if we switched our clocks at noon?

Lots of people would miss lunch. Others would miss appointments.

Conversations would have to be cut short. “Oh my gosh! Just where has the day gone? I gotta run!”

It’s way less stressful to do it the way we do now, when we’re asleep.

Time for a reality check

The Boundary communities came through big on Monday night by filling both the Midway hall and their bellies at the spaghetti dinner put on to help send the BCSS Grade 11/12 French Class off for a week-long field trip to Quebec.

The parking lot was full and the hall even more so. The students going on the trip signed the placemats

used at the spaghetti dinner. Several wrote that the trip wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the community.

It isn’t a one-way street either. Later this year the Boundary will play host to a group coming from Que-bec, and the Boundary will be richer for it too. The lo-cal kids will gain experience and insight that will be of benefit to both themselves personally and the wider community in which we all live.

A story will illustrate the benefit of getting out and about more.

Several years ago a local rancher needed a trip to Vancouver to pick up some supplies.

The farmer took along his daughter’s teenage boy-friend on the trip. They found themselves driving down Oak Street at about 7:30, maybe a quarter to eight in the morning.

It was the young boyfriends’ first trip to the city and his eyeballs were just about popping out of his head and he kept muttering, “I don’t believe it!”

Finally the farmer asked him, “What’s so unbeliev-able?”

“All of the hookers here in the city,” said the young fellow.

It took a minute to twig onto what he meant, but the farmer soon enough came back with, “Look a little closer there, kid. All those women are standing next to poles with a sign at the top that says Bus Stop.”

Exchange trips are invaluable.

Good hearing, poor comprehension? e number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. is is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newly-developed hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. is means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high-frequency range makes speech sound mu ed and unclear. e person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. e dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

consider themselves to have a hearing problem. ey can hear deep tones with no issue, and o en put di culty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying.

A new hearing chip has beendeveloped.

Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test

Ginette van Wijngaarden, at Connect Hearing, advises people with hearing loss on the new hearing chip, together with her colleagues.

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a so ware program analyzes the di erence relative to normal hearing. ese values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. e test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. e chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and ampli es only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. anks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this signi cantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

Re: Noll files suit; article published Thursday, March 5

That’s all well and fine, Mr. Noll may

get his apology, but the taxpayers are the ones that lose.

How much money has the council and members spent on this already? If it’s $10,000, and I would bet it’s more, that is a lot of money for a small city.

I have said this before: we have a

bylaw that says if the court decides who is wrong then that party has to repay the city. If this goes away, the people of Greenwood are the losers, not our honourably elected city council. Time you guys stepped to the plate.

Byron Goch, Greenwood

I recently moved back to one of the most beautiful and peaceful places to live in Canada as far as I’m concerned. When I was a girl growing up on a cattle ranch near Bridesville, I told my family I was going to move to the city and be-come famous. Love changed my direc-tion at 20 when I married my husband so as you guessed, I ended up staying, with dreams of one day moving to a city to experience the lifestyle thought I was missing.

In June of 2011 my husband’s work ended up uprooting our family to the

big city (not really a city, but to me it was). I set off on my new adventure with a very optimistic outlook—now let me be careful here, I am not bashing other places but for this girl it wasn’t quite what I expected.

We bought a nice home in a nice neighbourhood in West Kelowna and I couldn’t wait to meet my neighbours. I recruited a married couple next door to help me spearhead my first ever block party.

I was so excited and to my surprise we had a great turnout—probably three-quarters of the people in our cul-de-sac came out. I met them all and sadly in the next three years never talked to half of them again and let me

tell you this girl is a very people-orient-ed person.

It was my observation that there were a lot of expenses I didn’t factor in when you live there. I had to pay for yucky tasting chlorinated water. So it didn’t take long for this little country bumpkin to appreciate the Boundary and all it has to offer. Not only do you go to the local grocery stores and you pretty much know everyone and get at least a hug or two a day, but we have so much to offer beautiful hiking trails, amazing places of a great coffee of a bite to eat, the beauty of the Kettle River, an amazing school system to raise children and so much more…

Ginette Wheeler, Rock Creek

Re: School board facing money crunch“What is happening is that govern-

ment is requesting boards to cut admin-istration spending.”

It is about time for these admin-istration spending cuts because over the years they have grown in size in

all districts. The money belongs in our classrooms. I have watched this board administration costs from 12 years ago climb from over $300,000 when enrollment was high and we went to a four-day week to now over $800,000 with student enrollment at 1,285.

In our school district financial state-ments for 2013-14 personnel expenses above employee wages including trust-ees and administrators was $217,008.84.

The mileage rate is 54¢ a kilometre, maybe more under the new contract which also ties into trustees raises as well.

Now if you have an ICBC claim and sustained injuries that require you to travel to different medical appointments you get 25¢ a kilometre, which has been the going rate over last 15 years. And ICBC is the most lucrative insurance

City taxpayers could be the losers

Thank God I’m a Boundary Country girl

It’s time for administration spending cuts

(Gladys) ViolaMarriott1926 – 2015

(Gladys) ViolaIn Loving Memory of

Viola passed away on Sunday, her favourite day of

the week, March 8th at Oliver Hospital. A Celebration of Life will take

place at Park Drive Church, 6570 Park Drive, on Saturday, March 14,

2015 at 11 am. There will be a light lunch following. Interment at Bridesville Cemetery at 3 pm with a tea following at approximately 3:45 pm at the Bridesville Community Hall.

Viola was predeceased by her devoted husband, Horace in 2007 and is survived by 4 children, Ron, Joyce, Ivor & Anita, 5 grandchildren, 2 step-grand-children, 5 great grandchildren, many nieces, neph-ews, brother Merle Hanson, and sister Helen DeWitte.

Viola was born in Red Deer, Alberta where her family farmed. Due to her father’s poor health she was required to work on the farm creating a life long aversion to farming. At age 18, she moved with her family to Sidley, BC beginning her life adventures including housekeeping and working in the bakery in Osoyoos. She attended Bible College in Victoria graduating from a 2 year program as Valedictorian.

Viola then returned to Bridesville, marrying Horace Marriott. They resided in Bridesville for over 60 years where they raised their 4 children, being heavily involved in church and community activities. She was ready to pray, preach or sing at any time. She was known far and wide for her cooking and award winning baking ‘blessing many with her gift of hospitality. She sewed for both practical purposes as well as a hobby. Painting became her post retirement hobby.

When the drive down the hill became too much, Viola and Horace relocated to Oliver where their hospitality continued. Viola always greeted new people and took an interest in their lives. She tried to keep up with activities in the spheres of her family, neighbors, church family, missionaries, community and world events. She read widely, listened to news items and would share scriptural insights.

Viola loved people and people returned the love. She will be missed by many.

Special thanks to all those who provided care and kindness to our mother.

In lieu of fl owers, contributions can be made to Oliver Gleaners or Gideon’s Bible Society.

Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting www.nunes-pottinger.com

Arrangements entrusted to Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium, Oliver & Osoyoos.

John PringleJohn Pringle, of Rock

Creek, aged 66, passed away on Friday, March 6 in

Boundary Hospital. He is survived by his wife,

Leona, sons, Michael and Bill and sister Gayle.

A celebration of life will be held at the Wildlife Club in Rock Creek on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Food and drink will be supplied.

The family has asked that in lieu of fl owers that donations can be made to the Kettle River Lions Club, c/o Les Jackman, P.O. Box 202, Rock Creek, BC V0H 1Y0

company in North America. Do we need to belong to British

Columbia Trustees’ Association that has morphed into a politically mo-

tivated organization? How does the BCSTA enhance learning outcomes? It is not a compulsory membership and a few districts such as Kootenay

8 have withdrawn from BCSTA.

Its funding comes from student enroll-ment in each school district, fees calcu-lated on $8,000 per student funding. Can we afford it—plus is there any payback?

I believe the money would be better spent on reopening our GFSS cafeteria for our kids than put it into some political black hole.

The West Boundary Food and Re-sources Society (FAR) held the second of a four-part series of monthly workshops entitled Seed to Table on the last day of February at St. Jude’s Anglican Church in Greenwood.

Speaking on behalf of FAR, Vivien Browne said that about 40 people turned out for the workshop on gardening. They came from Osoyoos to Christina

Lake and everywhere in between. In the morning they had a presen-

tation by Lorraine Dick talking about worms and vermaculture. Then people pitched in to reconstruct the greenhouse at the Greenwood Community Garden that sits on St. Jude’s property. The work to restore the greenhouse was overseen by Tim Arnell.

After a lunch catered by Greenwood City Foods, workshop partici-pants planted trays of spring harvest salad mix to take home.

Then Carol Young gave a presentation on companion and antagonist planting, planting in the Boundary growing zone and crop rotation.

FAR recently unveiled their new web-site: www.farsociety.ca. It is an interac-tive website designed by Westbridge res-ident Judy Singer with funding from a federal New Horizon’s for Seniors grant.

The next Seed to Table workshop will be held on March 28, again at St. Jude’s so that people can see the progress of the greenhouse.

Credit Union CEO retiresThe Board of Directors of Heritage

Credit Union wishes to announce the retirement of Chief Executive Of-ficer Lorne Myhra. After more than 28 years as CEO of Heritage, Myhra has decided to retire on March 31.

Heritage Credit Union has been very successful under Myhra’s watch and has grown to more than $143 million in assets. He founded the very successful HG Insurance Agen-cies and in partnership with Creston Credit Union created Growth Finan-cial Corp.

He also served as a director of Credit Union Central of B.C.

“The board, management and staff wish Lorne well and would like to thank him for his years of service

and recognize his achievements at HCU,” said board chair Julie Morri-son.

“Lorne leaves HCU larger and stronger than it was when he joined us. We are well positioned to contin-ue serving member and community needs in the future.”

James Craig has been appointed interim CEO and the board has started the search for a new CEO, Morrison said. Craig recently retired from a successful career in the credit union sector and is a long-time resi-dent of Castlegar.

He brings many years senior lead-ership experience in credit union operations and is recognized for his strong leadership and a commitment to credit union values.

CBC Radio Daybreaak South host Chris Walker (right) interviews RJ and Tom Lesher during his stop at the Bored Room Bistro on Tuesday morning. He was on the first day of a five-day road trip that will see the show doing live broadcasts from Cranbrook, Invermere and Rev-elstoke. He’d been invited to stop in at the Bistro after he’d asked anyone along his route who had something happening to give the show a call. It was a good way for the Boundary’s closest CBC crew to stop in and see what the Boundary has to offer. A small crowd of about a dozen people turned out to welcome him.

IT’S TAX, FINANCE AND INSURANCE TIME:

Face the future with confi denceDo you sometimes worry

that one hard blow, like a re, a serious ailment, or nancial di culties when you retire, could darken your future? You would surely sleep more peace-fully knowing that you have su cient insurance coverage.

In fact, today you can obtain insurance policies that are tru-ly adapted to your home, your car, and your life. With house insurance, for example, it is wise to have a policy that cov-ers all your assets. In addition, for your peace of mind, you can choose a policy that o ers ser-vices such as psychological help a er a major re, legal assis-tance in case of litigation with a

neighbour, etc.As for car insurance,

it is important to carry su cient coverage. In addition, some com-panies now o er road-side assistance, which is more or less compre-

hensive: full-time assistance in case you run out of gas or have a at tire, coverage everywhere in Canada and the United States, several emergency assistance calls per year without supple-mentary fees, etc. It is up to you to shop around for a car insur-ance policy that includes the services that will make you feel safer.

As well, if you fear getting sick one day and your condition being dependent on the delays that are inherent in our health care system, you should know that supplementary health care insurance is now available. As well, you can decide to acquire insurance against a serious ill-ness, sto that the disease does not put you in a precarious nancial situation.

Finally, life insurance can be a tool for planning your retire-ment as well as a way to reduce the amount of tax your heirs will have to pay a er your death.

For youyour property,

your retirement, andfor the people you love!
