With at least seven of our usual members away at Interhash in Fiji it was a quieter than usual crowd that gathered for SQUATTING SQUAW’s run from

the Prince Hotel Kirrawee. Does this tell us who the noisy ones are?” Mmm! RABBIT carried her gorgeous Grandson ARCHIE into the Sports Bar to say hello to his grandma’s Hash friends but he fell foul of the barman who said “You can’t come in here young man, this is a gambling area! Get out!” Well done ARCHIE you are going to make a great Hashman thrown out of the pub on your first Hash run!

As PIG had notified “the blokes”that he could not make it tonight and would one of “the blokes” please step up as TM. SQUATTING SQUAW was kept busy first of all explaing to the first volunteer, GOON, where the run was going. Then MERKIN volunteered as well so another explanation

was needed! BUT WAIT! in came GREWSOME to stand in as TM! So for the third and last time SQUATTING SQUAW explained her lengthy run details to the REAL stand in TM, GREWSOME! By this time the pack numbers had increased, ARCHIE had been banished to his pram ready for the run and BINGO was pointing at her watch to let the pack know it was TIME!

SQUATTING SQUAW told me after the pack had left that she did not get time to reccy her run so it was rather long and she thought the runners would be looking for shortcutting opportunites at every turn!.

SQUATTING SQUAW and I decided it was time to leave the Pub and wander down and get the bucket ready outside Bunnings. First of all, out of the darkness, came SHORTnCURLY to say hello and join us for the rest of the evening Then came MERKIN “I got lost” he lamented..thank goodness he did not get the TM job tonight! BROCKIE called my mobile wondering where the bucket was being held and soon the walkers straggled in and, as MERKIN was a “runner”, we could open the bucket and pop the champagne!

Once it was established that SIR LES was safely back “in the fold” (was anyone even aware or cared he was not back?) stand in RA GOON called circle up. GOON had some interesting facts about the Princes Highway, which goes past/through Kirrawee, and he has kindly waved all copyrights to his prose and given me permission to print it here. Thank you GOON

HISTORY: In 1920 – the (then) Prince of Wales – Edward, visited Australia – on the premise to thank Australians for their contribution to WWI However, it seems a more important reason for the trip was that his father (George V) wanted to remove Edward to remove his son from the temptations of an idle life in England. Edward was a notorious womaniser and had a penchant for married women, rumoured to be bisexual with a habit of making friends among the more disreputable coteries (a small group of people with shared interests or tastes, especially one that is exclusive of other people.) of fashionable

high society. The Prince’s visit in 1920 was a huge occasion – where tens of thousands of Australians came to see him, touch him and throw confetti on him. He had a strict timetable with 337 Official duties. It seems he disliked the whole affair. One of the only highlights of the trip for him was when a train that he was in, in Perth WA derailed. He emerged unscathed – with a silver drink shaker in

one hand. Apparently, it bucked up his spirits that he had survived okay and he said he was delighted that he and his party had experienced an unscheduled activity. He took it with a sense of humour and was nicknamed “the Digger Prince”. The idea was that NSW would honour this visit, with a grand gesture by naming a series of Council Roads – “the Princes Highway” so he could travel from Sydney to Melbourne down the coast and meet the good folk of coastal Australia. But at that stage (1920) there was no coordinated effort on roads – (the DMR was only established in 1925). All roads were council roads. Eg. there was no Tom Uglys Bridge – but a Punt service across the river Only The Bulli Pass road existed – no Mt Ousley. This is where they had the official naming ceremony on 19th. October 1920. The shiny-pants bureaucrats (including the NSW Minister for Local Government -Thomas Mutch), without the Prince, went to the top of Bulli Pass to hold a “Naming Ceremony” for the Princes Highway. The Bulli Pass Road road was so steep that the cars transporting the official party could not make the climb and the official party had to walk to the top. So, in 1920, it was considered “all too hard” and the Prince went another way. However, the Prince did give his permission to name the road after himself! Actually, once actual construction of the Princes Hwy was started in earnest it took over 40 years to

build – declared as National Route 1 – in June 1955. (the work still continues today with By-passes, deviations, road widenings etc.)..Great History lesson GOON..thank you

I have sourced some photos of the “Brickpit” at Kirrawee which is causing so much angst for the residents of Kirrawee and the rest of The Shire too. Every day the traffic is a nightmare in the area and SQUATTING SQUAW and LOAN ARRANGER have trouble driving in and out of their street at anytime of the day! This is a photo of the original brickpit.

This is a photo of the work in “progress” now! Between 1912 and 1961, the brick works produced millions of bricks and clay pipes a year for rapidly developing areas of Sydney. Soon after production started in 1912, the works were turning out up to two million bricks a year and, by 1939, annual output had reached seven million. Clay and shale quarried from the southern portion of the Kirrawee site significantly reduced the cost of transporting materials from other areas and kept the factory competitive with other suppliers, particularly

through the war years and Great Depression era. Records show that the brick works had several owners over time, starting with the Sutherland Brick Company (1912-1917), Refractory Bricks Limited (1917-1926) and finally the Punchbowl Brick and Tile Company Limited (1927-1961). Following its decommissioning in 1968, the site was cleared of all buildings and the landmark brick chimney was demolished. And this is what it will look like. Call it what they may, “South Village”, will ALWAYS be known as The Brickpit!

10 - What a perfect evening SQUATTING SQUAW engineered for the Pack! 9.5 - We set off on time with what appeared to be 2 Trail Masters: GREWSOME and GOON 9.0 - Plenty of arrows, twists and turns and a sprinkling of checks and on-backs on the dark streets of Kirrawee with DUNDEE and HANNIBAL confidently leading the Pack.

8.5 - What a clever Hare! SQUATTING found the staircase from HELL; down down and up up with thigh muscles burning! 8.0 - Hills, Hills and more Hills. The Trail Masters decided to part company with the Pack. SCOTCH MIST discovered her 4klm relaxed training run was turning into a high intensity workout. SIR LES was

left wandering the back streets having broken the string keeping POWERHOUSE, QR and HELLISMELLHER in sight. 7.5 - Half way through setting the run, SQUATTING got a call from LOAN ARRANGER - he was a desperate man with a Hard On - "Come Home Woman" he implored and that's just what she did - no twists, no turns, no checks no on-backs; just a 3 klm straight run to conjugal bliss. We should be so lucky! On On BINGO

GOON then told us a joke about Prince Harry & Meghan about bad breath & smelly socks. This prompted GRENADE to also tell a joke. Not to be outdone up piped DUNDEE with a blonde joke which was even worse than GRENADE’s!

POWERHOUSE hid behing his fence last Monday and watched as CANNON, in his bid to find all the recycled cans and bottles in POWERHOUSE’s bin let his Junk Mail phamplets fly all around the street!

Soon it was time to head into the pub for food, wine and good company. SQUAW had organised a long table for us and we managed to just about fill every seat. The service at this hotel is always spot

on and the meals once again were the same! Good choice SQUAW! Well done! Tonight there was plenty of parking in the area without using the Bunnings carpark. PSEUDO and I parked in the Disabled spot in the pub’s underground carpark and rode the lift to the bar!......gotta love my disabled sticker! RABBIT’s family were at the Pub earlier and had a semi-date night when RABBIT absconded with young ARCHIE. They did come and collect him at the bucket before he had a chance to indulge the drinks on offer! Such a cutie!

As usual, the chatter around the table was loud and full of laughter. Always lots to catch up on each Monday night. QR told me that SLOTCARD’s dear mother is recovering well after her fall and her injuries are healing. Great news, what a lady!

For those of you reading this and were not at the run I will repeat GOON’s joke here for you.

‘Prince Harry had a problem and was not too sure how to tell Meghan before they consummated their love. He pondered over it and decided to confess to Meghan that night that he had really really smelly feet which made his socks STINK.

In the meantime, Meghan too was struggling with her own confession as she had a problem as well! Meghan decided to confess to Harry that night that she had really really BAD BREATH.

When they met for dinner and as Harry went to kiss her, Meghan said ‘I have a confession to make darling Harry’. Harry gasped and said “HAVE YOU BEEN EATING MY SOCKS?” Ha! Ha! Good one GOON.

Once again the Sharks supporters were very happy..I had text messages from DUCK all the way from Fiji commenting on the game. He was secluded in his Hotel room watching all by himself in peace and serenity! More about this story when DUCK returns.

The Tiger supporters were looking pleased with themselves too. A nail biting finish/win for their team.

I believe we will be having a change- over soon of our Hash Grog. SCOTCH MIST and GREWSOME have done a fabulous job but are now handing it over to SQUATTING SQUAW and LOAN ARRANGER.
