With investments of €29 / inhabitant, compared to €12.6 for the national average, Aquitaine has invested 1.2 Billion euros over the past ten years in research and innovation. Banking on excellence, it is the top French region for the section of its budget devoted to research and technology transfer (€100 Million).

In total, more than 13,000 people hold positions linked to R&D in Aquitaine.Aquitaine is ranked 5th region for the number of researchers in the private sector and 6th in the public sector.

The University of Bordeaux, one of the first 3 win-ners of the ‘Initiatives for Excellence’ program, is among of the top universities for research:

innovAtionRanked 5th among French ‘Innovative Cities’ in 2014, Bordeaux and its region are one of the most dynamic areas in France for fostering the development of products of the future.In 10 years scientific production in Aquitaine has grown by 25% and patent applications have risen spectacu-larly by 75% (compared to 30% at national level).The Usine du Futur plan, initiated by the Aquitaine Regional Council in 2014, aims to support innovation within companies and their competitiveness. 200 com-panies have been audited for initial recommendations.

Recent examples of innovation in Bordeaux labs and enterprises:

! Poietis is the first French company to develop biological tissue using laser bio-printing. Its pro-cess, the only one of its kind in the world, allows ‘printed’ skin to adapt to the body’s changes over time.

! Innoveox is a pioneering start-up in the proces-sing of toxic industrial waste using cutting-edge hydrothermal oxidation technology.

! Olikrom, a recent start-up based on the Cheminnov site of the Bordeaux campus, is deve-loping intelligent pigments able to change accor-ding to temperature, light or pressure.

! EXOES has just been ranked 3rd in the ‘My Positif Impact’ campaign by Nicolas Hulot, which aims to promote operational solutions for combating climate change.

! Base has developed a thermal photovoltaic panel named Cogen’Air, thanks to which it has been nominated Éco-entreprise 2015.

! The Flowers team of Inria researchers has invented Poppy, the first modular robot for 3D printing.

! The 2014 CNRS Bronze Medal was awarded to Samuel MARRE, a researcher in chemical physics within the "Fluides supercritiques" group of the ICMCB.

! A Bordeaux team from the pharmacology depart-ment in the University is developing a food sup-plement to combat burnout.

! Bordeaux neurobiologist Christophe Mulle has been awarded the prestigious Lamonica prize for neurology at the Académie des Sciences, Paris, in recognition of his career and latest discoveries on the plasticity of synapses.

Aquitaine Développement Innovation works to sup-port innovative projects by enterprises alongside regio-nal partners. It assists innovation in the following sectors: bio-industries and medical technologies, wood and habitat, chemistry and materials, environment and energy, the food industry, ITC, transport and mecha-nical industries. It has an Investors Relations service that supports fundraising for high-tech start-ups from the region, as well as a Design hub.

Aquitaine Science Transfert, a Company for the Acceleration of Technology Transfer (SATT – Sociétés d’Accélération du Transfert de Technologie), is a one-stop shop for transfer and incubation activities by the University of Bordeaux, research bodies (CNRS and INSERM) and the State. Its aim is to stimulate innovation in Aquitaine using academic research results obtained with businesses. Review of 2014: 3 companies founded (NFC Interactiv, Poeitis and Inanov), 9 licenses signed and 3 products brought to market in the fields of healthcare, optics and digital technology.
