On Saturday , I'd gone on a date with a girl whom I had a crush on for a few months. We'd been regularly talking over these months. But, as our schedules  were often times full, going out on a date was not practical. Th en, in just the past few weeks, both of our schedules opened, and we gured to make plans for a lunch-date on a Saturday. She looked like Betty Boop. Big eyes, small heart-shaped lips, tight body, and a personality to match. She dressed like a Manhattanite. Her clothes were sophisticated, yet simple in detail. Her scent was of samapguita in warm oil. Throughout the months, I saw there were times her face was gray as a stormy day. There were times where her smile didn't match the emotions behind her eyes. I could tell something troubled the girl, then. I saw that something was changing her, her perspective on life, on people, on relationships. Later, I found out that she'd been through a typical cheater-forgiver relationship,  where she was the forgiver , and he was the cheater . The stor y was common. She  was busy with work. On Saturday, I'd gone on a date with a girl whom I had a crush on for a few

months. We'd been regularly talking over these months. But, as our schedules

were often times full, going out on a date was not practical. Then, in just the past

few weeks, both of our schedules opened, and we figured to make plans for a

lunch-date on a Saturday.

She looked like Betty Boop. Big eyes, small heart-shaped lips, tight body, and a

personality to match. She dressed like a Manhattanite. Her clothes were

sophisticated, yet simple in detail. Her scent was of samapguita in warm oil.

Throughout the months, I saw there were times her face was gray as a stormy

day. There were times where her smile didn't match the emotions behind her

eyes. I could tell something troubled the girl, then. I saw that something was

changing her, her perspective on life, on people, on relationships.

Later, I found out that she'd been through a typical cheater-forgiver relationship,

where she was the forgiver, and he was the cheater. The story was common. She

was busy with work. He was a young boy trying to prove himself as a ladies man

in the office. According to her stories, she'd call him thinking he was at home only

to find out that he was at a bar with other girls. With her other accounts, she told

me how girls in other departments knew they were a couple, but always made the

first move on him. Then and again, there are three sides to every story: the

perceptions of the first party, the perceptions of the other parties, and what

really happened.

As we were talking in the coffee shop, she'd been feverishly texting on both her

phones. To whom, I couldn't tell you. I was more stoked to be outside of the office

than anything else that day. For once the Sun shone, and the torrential rains

didn't threaten to strand me in a far off city, surrounded by people I don't like.

Saturday was as close to a good day as I’d had in many months.

When I went to get a cup of coffee, she said that she'd go to the restroom. She took

a left at the barista counter. I thought she jumped out of the bathroom window,

since I'd been sitting in that Starbucks for twenty minutes looking like the creepy

guy watching people sipping coffee. Then I saw her, she was outside, bag in tote,

walking in front of the coffee shop, and back to the table. At that point, I started

to figure that I'd be in for some strange behavior with her.

Throughout the date, every five minutes was her talking about all the girls her

ex-boyfriends cheated on her with. So, I told her, "So, they cheated on you. It's a

common story, get over it. I'm not gonna be sad for you. It isn't good what they did

to you, but why did you forgive them so many times?" I further went on to tell her

that she was a smart woman with a promising career, at a leading bank, ahead of

her. In other countries, she'd be considered one of the most eligible women of any

city. The opinions I expressed to her were honest. I was trying to open her eyes to

see the future being set in her hands. As I told her my observation of her

situations, she texted intensely on her phones. (Maybe you don't wake confused

people who are asleep. Maybe you don’t bring people living virtually to reality.)

She said that she'd been waiting for a call from one of her superiors at the office

for further instructions on a project that they were working on. I accepted that,

after-all it's not uncommon to work on a Saturday. The superlative she was

working with, as she explained to me, was a married man. He was a transactional

leader, who, nonetheless, made effort to hit on her when he could. In earlier

conversations she told me how she felt uncomfortable in his presence, but still

had to work with him because of the bank hierarchal structure.

Then, she got up and told me that she'd be right back, and that she was going to

meet with a friend just outside. So she got up, and went to the front of the coffee

shop. She met with another guy. He gave her a CD, and she gave him money. She

showed me the CD. It was for a local band. She went on to tell me that he was an

alumnus of her university, and was a professor at a college in the capitol.

As the afternoon became evening, we took in a movie, and had some dinner. It

was well past seven in the evening, and we were talking over pizza and juice. All

the while she was on her phones, texting, waiting, biding. Then, after one text,

she said, “My Boss is waiting for me nearby.” Being that she had earlier

expressed to me that they were working on a project, I obliged. We paid our bill,

and both parted ways.

What's funny to me though, is that an office is going to start working on a

Saturday evening, past seven at night? While on a date, one schedules to meet

another guy friend in front of the place you’re having a date at, without telling

your date ahead of time? The whole time you’re on a date, you send text

messages to other people while you talk with your date? All the while, your date

gives you their undivided attention.

It takes one to know one. It takes a player to recognize game. Maybe those grey

months changed her perspective on life, relationships, and people. From what I

saw in her actions throughout the day, it’d seem that I was the half-time show in a

phony game. Please. It takes a stronger man to drop a woman.

So, I sent her this message:

Dear Betty,

I've been thinking about what you told me yesterday. About the guy

you went out with for four months, and how he's been rekindling a

relationship with you recently.

I can see that the time you and him were together touched your

heart. It's good you still have feelings for him, even after both of youseparated because of what he did to you. It shows you are a forgiving

person. Maybe that's why he wants to get back with you.

I know how it feels to have feelings for another person. Especially

one who makes you happy, and let's you express yourself without

 being self-conscious. It's a wonderful feeling. I don't want to take

those feelings you have for him away from you. Even when the two of

you are separated, and his persistence to win you back still affects

your heart, it shows that your feelings for him are not completely out

of your system.

I don't want to confuse you, or be a factor in causing pains with yourheart. For the sheer fact that doing so, will detract from any

experiences we may share in the future. I am not for playing games

of the heart.

Let's reserve what we have for one another to the next lifetime. It's

no one's fault, really. That's just how times are. Time will do what it

pleases, regardless of anything that happens.

Let's be friends, and see what develops. Let's not force anything or

bee too pretentious with what we share. Let's see what happens with

the times, and let the events happen as they do. It'd be a shame tofind out that what we shared was artificial, without a sound basis of

feelings to build a strong, and lasting relationship between man and

 woman.

Hopefully, you feel the meanings of these thoughts I am sending to

you. Maybe there will be a time that is right for us to be together.

Until then, let's see what life will bring our way.

 Always,

Mestizo Brown
