Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORTS for Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat and Prince RupertApril 25 to May 2, 2010Number 166  Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather has been a mixed bag of sun, cloud and rain. Just about all of the rivers are on the rise. The main snow melt-off from the mountains is happening. Fishing for Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char is fair using both fly, spin and conventional gear. The Skeena River is dirty and really not fishable.  It would be a good idea now to fish the clean seams of the tributary rivers that flow into the Skeena.  The lower end of the Zymoetz (Copper) River is coloured up and is borderline fishable.  I spotted some fly fishermen below the bridge this morning trying their luck.  The Kalum River has been rising but is still in good shape and fishing for Steelhead is good.  Chinook (King) Salmon are being landed also.  This is the time of year when you can catch Steelhead and Chinook on the same day.  Click here to read an article I wrote titled "May 2nd on the Kalum River".  Check out the video clip below from a great day fishing on the Kalum River on April 20th. The Kitimat River was low mid week but is now on the rise bringing in some fresh Steelhead and scattering the Trout.  Chinook

fishing in the Kitimat Harbour is poor right now and is weather dependent. The Chinook start showing up around mid May. Crab (Dungeness and King) fishing is excellent.  Check out the Ron Wakita report below.  Ocean Chinook fishing in Prince Rupert is really starting to pick up.  Fishing for Halibut is good and so is trapping Crabs and Prawns.  Check out the Jeff Carlson report below.  Scroll below for an awesome photo of a HUGE Halibut caught out of Prince Rupert.  The photo was sent to me by Mike Warren of Houston BC. The Smithers anglers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Bulkley River summer-run Steelhead.  In the meantime lake fishing is really starting to pick up.  Check out the Cory Koenig report below.  Jason Munday in Terrace reports good Steelhead fishing in some of the Skeena tributaries. He heard reports of Chinook landed in the lower Kalum River. Trout and Dolly Varden fishing is excellent also.  Lake fishing is starting to happen.  Check out Jason Munday's report below.

The draw for a one day driftboat fishing trip for 3 people was held at the Home Hardware and Tackle Shop in Kitimat on April 30th. The draw was made by Tony Brady (left). Tony is the president of the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce. The winner is Todd W. Sherstone of Terrace BC. Congratulations Todd. Thank you to all who entered. Tony also drew the winner for a one day driftboat fishing trip for 2 people. At the present time we are still trying to contact that winner.  April 30, 2010 One "New" clip posted on Video Clips

I had the pleasure of fishing on the Kalum River with Calvin Higano, Ron Wakita and Glen Kilcup on Tuesday morning, April 20, 2010 for four hours. Glen invited us on this trip with his Jetboat (more boat detail below) crack of dawn. We hooked four Steelhead and landed two plus a bunch of Trout. We landed one Steelhead using a silver spoon with size 3 OTT Gamagatsu Siwash hook rigged-up on a 7' Trophy XL rod and an Abu Cardinal 704 spinning reel spooled-up with 30lb Tuf-Line Duracast braided line. This rod and reel Combo handled this Kalum River Steelhead very nicely and was caught and released using the Gibbs "catch & release" net. The Gibbs C&R Net has a very soft mesh which allows anglers to net Steelhead and release them unharmed back into the river. Calvin landed the other Steelhead using a Sage 2106 rod and a Shimano Calcutta 250TE reel. Calvin was the "Hot Rod" on this trip! Calvin landed one and had another two Steelhead on which released themselves (AKA long-line-release) after a bit of a tussle. Calvin is a very gifted angler who brought some very effective Steelheading techniques to the North West. One of his techniques Calvin calls "Dredging" and another would be the method which he cures his bait. Calvin uses Pautzkse Pink Fire Cure on both his Chinook roe and on his Prawn bait. As most Steelheaders already know the quality of the bait is critical to angler success. A huge THANK YOU to Glen for an awesome morning fishing trip on the Kalum! Here is some more info on Glen's custom "Rocket Jet Boat". This boat has a top speed of 48 MPH with 450 HP pushing water through a Hamilton Jet with a huge 10 inch impeller. When this thing takes off...sit down, hold your hat and hang-on! The Teflon bolted to the bottom of the boat allowed us to skim over the shallowest water.

Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.  Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, podcasts, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction. I am at your service.

KALUM RIVER: More anglers are heading out to try their luck fishing for Trout and Steelhead. Fishing has been reported as fair to good.  The water is coming up slowly but is still in good fishable shape.  Lots of Steelhead and Chinook are being caught now.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER:   The water is borderline fishable. Steelhead fishing is reported as good. Trout fishing is good also. Check out the Ron Wakita report below for a report of a nice Steelhead catch on April 25th.    Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters, Kitimat BC

KITIMAT RIVER:  There were some very nice Steelhead caught on the Kitimat River this week  The Kitimat Hatchery and Lower Dike produced some very bright Steelhead especially on the tide.  The middle and upper Kitimat is still a little spotty but the ones that were caught were outstanding.

April 24 Ariel Kuppers and Jesse Houston were fly fishing the upper Kitimat River and Ariel landed this Steelhead and lost another.. Ariel was using his Sage VT2 Spey rod and a Ross CLA reel.  Ariel was fishing with a Chartreuse and White Intruder style Fly that he tied himself.  Congratulations Ariel!

April 25 I had the pleasure of drifting with my two sons Brandon and Corey.  It is always gratifying for me to fish with my sons.  We all take turns on the oars and whoever is on the oars when a fish is hooked earns the title of Captain for the rest of the trip.  I am happy to announce that I was on the oars when Brandon hooked and landed this beauty.  This earned me the title of "Captain Daddio" and the ability to remark "Who's your Daddy!" We were Hot Shotting with G.Loomis Hot Shot rods and a #35 Luhr Jensen Hot Shot.  Well done Brandon and "Good Job Team"!

April 27 Adam Brown reports: "Hey there, I'm sure glad I decided to try for steelhead this month. April truly is hot!! This is my third steelhead on my third trip out in April. Me and my friend Chayo went behind the Kitimat Hatchery. This was the only fish on but well worth the trip from Terrace!! Best looking and best fighting steelhead yet! I'd have preferred no adipose fin but hey people come halfway around the world for a photo like this!  God bless. Adam Brown"Congratulations Adam.  Very nice Steelhead and Thank You for sharing your photo and the details of your fishing trip to the Kitimat River.

April 28 I had the pleasure of fishing with Robert Tuttle and Bambang Widianto on the Kitimat River.  Robert is from New York and Bambang is from Indonesia and we were able to land one very nice Kitimat River Steelhead that was about 15lbs.  We also caught a Cutthroat Trout which I barbecued in my Driftboat for lunch.  Although the fishing was a little slow we had an excellent day on the Kitimat River.  I learned a bit about Indonesia and that it is 30 degrees there all year round.  It is no wonder that Bambang was so cold.  We left the barbecue in my Driftboat fired up to keep Bambang comfortable.  Congratulations Robert and it was fun and educational to fish with you guys.  Thanks for a great day!

Monavie Energy Drink April 30 I had the pleasure of Drifting with my good friends Dick from Smithers Home Hardware, Greg Egan and his 12 year old daughter Marissa.  Shortly into our drift Marissa caught and released a 16lb beautiful silver female Kitimat River Steelhead.  This was Marissa’s first Steelhead and I sensed a pretty special Dad and daughter moment. Greg and I nicknamed this Steelhead the "Monavie Energy Drink Steelhead".  Greg is a distributor for Monavie and Energy Drink may have been the lucky charm. Marisa is a very well mannered young lady who is going to be an excellent angler.  Congratulations to Marissa. Well done!Thank You to everyone for a Great trip and "Monavie Rocks".

May 1 "Alex the Great" is a nickname I coined for a Fly angler, Alessandro Cirotto from Italy.  We had a good day of Fly fishing on the Kitimat given the conditions and the lower numbers of Steelhead in the upper Kitimat River this week.  Alessandro hooked 3 Steelhead and landed 2 beauties.  They were 15 and 17lbs and absolutely gorgeous Steelhead.  In fact, they could have been twins.  Alessandro was using a combo fly that I put together on a previous trip.  My favorite fly for the Kitimat River with a Spey rod is Pink Rabbit strip pattern with a trailing hook.  When I lost the last one I had brought with me, I comboed a Pink Krystal bullet head fly tied by Ron Materi with a tube fly tied by Ken Moreau of Ken's flies.  The tube fly with the Krystal bullet comboed with the tube fly created the same articulating action of the Rabbit strip fly and it hooked a Steelhead right away.  Alessandro hooked 3 Steelhead on this fly and a new fly pattern (combo) has been added to my Steelhead Fly box.  Congratulations to Alessandro.   SUMMARY: I have a feeling that the Steelhead in the upper Kitimat River should improve with the rise in the river level from the rain we received.  The rise in the river level will cause Steelhead to move up from the lower Kitimat and entice more to migrate into the lower Kitimat.  Time will tell.  Stay tuned. DOUGLAS CHANNEL:    Bottom fishing and Crabbing is still the main focus of Saltwater boaters although we received a couple of reports that the Killer whales were in Sue Channel chasing some Herring and some Feeder Chinook.  The Killer whales are a marvel to observe in the water but they have a negative effect on the fishing.  When the Killer whales are around it is better to put the rods away and take out the cameras.  They are truly an incredible Wonder of Nature to watch. As we move into May, adult Chinook should start to migrate into the outer waters of the Douglas Channel.  The King of Salmon to many anglers are the Trophy fish to target.  We are anticipating a good return of Chinook to the Douglas Channel and Kitimat River this season.  I can hardly wait and neither can Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures.  I just spoke to Todd about doing some prescient trips for Chinook.  Stay tuned for some photos.

Special Report for April 25: I reported in last week`s Fishing Report that Calvin Higano alias "The Gypsy Steelheader from the Big City" was on "the drive for 5".  "The drive for 5" was an endeavor for Calvin to catch and release at least one Steelhead on 5 different rivers in the North West during his fishing trip,  On Sunday, April 25th Calvin accomplished his mission by releasing a Steelhead on the lower Copper River. This is quite the accomplishment especially considering Calvin only fished a couple of these rivers only one day.  Well Done Calvin!  Congratulations! It was a lot of fun fishing with Calvin and a Big Thank You for the recipe for the "magic prawn bait".

Special Report for April 26: I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friends Calvin Higano and Noel Gyger on the Kalum River.  With the river level higher than our previous trip last week, Noel was able to take us to more of his favorite holes on the upper Kalum.  Noel has an unbelievable knowledge of the Kalum River and Calvin and I listened intently to the Fishing stories which inspired the names of all the different fishing holes.  We managed to land one Steelhead and lose what we thought may have been a Chinook.  Even though we didn't catch lots of fish, we shared a wonderful morning of good friends, great fish stories and love of fishing.  Thanks for an awesome morning of fishing guys! Thank You to everyone who provided photos and info for this fishing report. Tight Lines!  Good Health!  Good Fishing! SincerelyRon Wakita P.S We have dates available for Drift boat trips, Jet boat trips and Salt water trips.  Please contact Noel [email protected] to book!

Hello Noel, fishing has been fantastic!  We have been very busy the whole month. Last week was a little cold, water was low and clear fishing was tough but as they say when the going gets tough the tough get going!! We got all our guests hooked up to some fine steelhead even some first

Fishing is our addiction - Guiding is our passion - Adventure is in our blood Fishing Report from:  Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven, Kitimat/Terrace BC

Hi Noel, the last weeks have been a roller coaster ride for our Steelhead anglers. Low water conditions have kept the Steelhead in the sea as the Kitimat and Skeena Rivers are at a trickle. Nonetheless the guys are hardcore and attached are some of the latest pic's. Pic's of repeat client, Hunter the American Tennis Pro and his partner Mark the bomber, as well a close-up of a pink fly with a Steelhead on the end of it. I caught this guy at the take-out this morning as I did a juggle for the guides, thanks for the fly Yassy, lucky 13!

The Steelhead are hiding in the deep log piles and trying to stay clear of the Bald Eagles and in fact one was not so lucky as he was pitched from the river and became the meal for an Eagle to enjoy.

Things may be looking better as the Killer Whales were in the Kitimat Arm this past weekend as well anglers spotting the odd Chinook running the fast rapids. Water temperature is fine at 42f-45f.

I expect the next bump in river level will produce those early Chinooks as well enjoy our peak Steelhead run for the Kitimat, Kalum and Skeena Rivers.

Our Saltwater charters start this May for Pacific Salmon and Halibut as we venture to the West Coast of BC targeting the Salmon's annual migration home.

Please contact Noel Gyger to book your next   trip of a lifetime!

This weeks guests are from, USA, England and Japan.  Sincerely,  Tracey Hittel. Fishing Report from:  J & E Tackle Shop, Prince Rupert BC

Fishing Report from:  Fish Tales Tackle Shop, Terrace BC Hello Noel, the Tackle Shop is getting busier and busier and everybody is into the spring steelhead and trout fishing...and dreaming of that first Chinook.  More and more ocean boaters stopping by for supplies before heading out to Prince Rupert or Kitimat. Soon the main tourism season will be upon us.  Hopefully we will have another good run of Salmon in the Kitimat and Skeena Rivers.  The Skeena is coloured up but we are so lucky here as we have many more rivers close by to fish that won't be dirty.  Actually we need this rising water to bring in the fresh runs.  Until next time.Cheers!Jason Munday

Hi Noel....Just wanted to pass on this photo of my good friend Tommy Gibaldi with this male Hatchery Steelhead that was caught just below the Hatchery on Friday. He was fishing with egg balls and we had spay fishermen from Smithers with a guide fishing around us and this was the only fish caught that afternoon. I appreciate your weekly report and look forward to it every Sunday. Thanks Noel and hope to see you this summer. Maybe we could get together and do some fishing this year.  Regards Kevin
