Multiple Roly Polys can be installed in public gathering areas, such as parks or university grounds, to accomodate picnics and outdoor meetings. The waterproof, sturdy design is also lightweight, so that the furniture elements can be organized in a large assembly fashion or small, individual gatherings. Rolled out completely, Roly Poly can serve as a simple oor or, rolled up either partially or completely, it can can provide a bench-like structure.

The debris in Tokyo is predicted to reach 22.72 million tons (g. 1,2). Spontaneous combustion due to the compression of flammable waste (i.e. tatami) over heavy machinery causing methane gas, has occured across the ruins. In the days following an earthquake, Roly Poly can oer a variety of functions (g. 3): a oor or bench for rest, a strecher-like mechanism for the transport of injured persons and flexible partitions. fig. 1,2: Satellite Photos of Japan, Before and After the Quake and Tsunami (http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/13/world/asia/satellite-photos-japan-before-and-after-tsunami.html)

Construction Overview

In order to focus on adaptability, we chose a form that can be folded to fulfill a variety of functions. The construction process began with a 1:1 prototype. The Roly Poly is made up of 8 individual units formed with a polystyrene foam core covered with waterproof tarpaulin and then with a thin wooden veneer (g. 1). The design's namesake originates from an insect, the armadillidiidae (g. 4 and 5).

The init ial prototype was refined tak ing inspiration from surfboard construction (fig. 2). The primary characteristics of a surfboard primary characteristics–a smooth, waterproof finish and lightweight, easy-to-carry form–are also potentially beneficial in post-disaster situation. The final assemblage of units can be either set directly atop the ground or folded upon itself, forming a bench-like seating device (g. 3). fig. 3: Construction Process adapted from Greener Surfboard (http://makeprojects.com/Project/Greener-Surfboard/39/1)g. 4,5: Wikipedia Entry for Armadillidiidae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armadillidiidae)

By rolling up Roly Poly completely, it forms a bench with a comfortable seating height. The leightweight structure can be installed anywhere for public gatherings or a picnic.

For emergencies, these benches can also a place of rest. It's foldability allows users to easily relocate, perhaps from a damaged residence to a temporary shelter.fig. 1: Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Crisis (http://www.news.com.au/world/magnitude-quake-strikes-japan/story-e6frfkyi-1226021696269)

In order to take a nap or relax without sitting in a sitting-up position, users can partially unfold Roly Poly to create a chaise lounge.

Following an earthquake, many people are unable to rest in a normal sitting up postition as a result of their injuries. The chaise lounge can accomodate these users with its exibility.g. 2: Image by Toshifumi Kitamura/AFP/Getty Images (http://www.ickr.com/photos/enciclopediapt/5523003854/)

A completely unfolded Roly Poly offers a smooth, clean surface for relaxing. The floor adapt to any surface, including slopes.
