Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.
Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.
The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2012 celebrated its 7th annual show with 800 makers and 110,000 people in attendance. Community-driven Mini Maker Faires are now being produced around the world—including right here in Greenbrae.
Greenbrae Mini Maker Faire is independently organized and operated under license from Maker Media, Inc.

The Van Craeynest Story
Van Craeynest began in 1920 when Roger J. Van Craeynest went to work for The Shreve and Co. He apprenticed under some of the
finest European master craftsmen in America, including John Wrightburg, and became a master die cutter, designer, and engraver.
In 1926 he opened his own business
in San Francisco with two other jewelers.Larry Van Craeynest joined the
company in 1960 after studying art in college. He is dedicated to training young
art isans and passing on the tra-d i t i o n s a n d jewelry making techniques that were used in the Victorian Era. The factory still incorpo-rates a European apprenticeship system, directed by Larry Van Craeynest.
Van Craeynest is celebrating 87 years
of old world jewelry craftsmanship.
In Marin, Van Craeynest jewelery is
available exclusively at Johann Paul Jewelers.
Stone Pizza KitchenA Passion for Local & Handmade
When your Mollie Stone’s Market opened Stone Pizza Kitchen, they knew it had to be done right. The key was sourcing an au-
thentic Italian wood-fired oven to guar-antee the crisp, delicately blistered crust of a wood-fired pizza.
Stone Pizza Kitchen developed its recipes with the wood-fired oven in mind. Scratch-made sauces and an artisanal crust with complex flavors from an overnight rise were paramount. The Chef selects the finest fresh mozzarella and toppings, high-lighting fresh local and seasonal ingredi-ents. Whether it’s a slice of Classic Mar-gherita or Hog Heaven, each bite of pizza is perfectly balanced with that just-right
combination of chewy and crunchy. Every pizza is available hot as a whole pizza or by the slice, as well as unbaked for the convenience of Take & Bake later.
The menu could have stopped there, but it’s called a “pizza kitchen” for a reason. The Chef folds the crust into old-world style Calzones, including favorites like Chicken Meatball with spinach and ricotta. The wood-fired oven is also used to bake Stuffed Potatoes and Lazones (family-style lasagnas). The domed oven roof lends a subtly smoky flavor and ad-dictively unique taste to everything that comes out of Stone Pizza Kitchen, located in Mollie Stone’s Market. Swimsuit Season is Calling!
Spring’s here, so summer is around the corner. If the words “swimsuit season” fill you with dread, consider these tips from JumpstartMD to help
you slim down by summertime:
Staying hydrated helps with weight loss. Being hydrated ensures your body doesn’t confuse thirst pangs for hunger pangs. Drink a big glass of water before each meal to take your hunger level down a notch so you don’t overeat.
Choose delicious veggies and healthy proteins. Although “healthy”, watch fruit intake to avoid excess sugar. Opt for fresh veggies and herbs like asparagus, watercress, mustard greens, parsley and cilantro. All are natural diuretics and can help cut down on any water retention. Avoid calorie and carbohydrate-loaded sauces and side dishes.
Avoid bottled juices and teas—they can be packed with excess sugar. Stick to home-brewed sun tea and don’t add sugar. Or add a burst of flavor to your water with lemon & lime wedges, cucumber slices, or even some nice, sliced up strawberries and chopped mint leaves – delicious!
Move it already! Get out there and walk Marin’s trails. People who walk just 30 minutes a day weigh an average of 15 pounds less than those who are sedentary.
Trouble with your knees? Swim–it’s great for muscle strengthening and easy on the joints. While some form of exercise 3-5 times a week is ideal, any movement is good movement !
Buy that swimsuit you want to look good in. This can be a great reminder that getting healthy is a gift you’re giving yourself!
Need more tips like this to shape up? JumpstartMD is the non-surgical medical weight management program most rec-ommended by Bay Area physicians. Enjoy the JumpstartMD coupon in back!

Bon Air Super: The First Store in the Center
When James T. Kilpatrick opened
the Bon Air Super Market in
1952, he was full of confidence.
“Never for a minute did I
doubt,” he later said, “that the largest
undertaking of my life could be anything
but a success.” And so Jim Kilpatrick
became a household name in Greenbrae
after creating the first business in the new
Greenbrae Shopping Center.
Kilpatrick had once operated a bread
delivery business in San Anselmo, and for
almost 20 years had been the proprietor
of a grocery store in Millbrae, where he
had a close relationship with that
community’s founder Niels Schultz.
When Schultz developed Greenbrae after
World War II, he invited Kilpatrick to
anchor the new shopping center. Having
a market hub was key in Schultz’s vision
of a community with all its needs to be
found locally.
Prominent architect Victor Gruen
worked with Schultz and Kilpatrick to
build “the most modern super market”
of the time in a location across Sir Francis
Drake Boulevard from the fast-growing
community of Greenbrae. They took the
name Bon Air from a nearby Victorian-era
hotel, long gone by then. The 125,000
square foot market being built was
considered “tremendous” at the time.
The big store’s grand opening on November 20, 1952, drew people from all over. Employees wore white uniforms, emblazoned on the back with “Bon Air SUPER,” and garrison-type white caps. The checkout facilities were of the latest design with turntables and conveyor belts, the shelves stocked with anything the people of Greenbrae could need: two pounds of bananas for a quarter, or a fifth of Kentucky bourbon for $3.98.
The Bon Air Super stood alone at first, soon to be joined by six other businesses including a hardware store, beauty parlor, and dry cleaning outfit. Later the market moved east in the center as Petrini’s, serving another generation of Marinites. Mollie Stone’s keeps up with the local demand today just as Jim Kilpatrick did over 60 years ago.
“...anything the people
of Greenbrae could
need: two pounds of
bananas for a
quarter, or a fifth of
Kentucky bourbon
for $3.98”

Spring Trendsfrom SandboxSpring is here, and with it comes these great fashion trends:
Color: The color parade continues to march into Spring 2013. Look for the many shades of blue including bright sapphire and navy. Emerald green is another strong color for spring this year along with yellow and shades of orange (think citrus.)
Prints: especially florals. Prints abound this spring, especially large, colorful florals and geometrics with a Pucci-esque vibe. Sandbox literally has you covered, with tops and dresses from Haley’bob and beautiful sheer shirts from Ella Moss and Language.
Stripes: Now, practically a staple from great lines like Bailey 44 and Splendid.
Maxi dresses: A spring fave. Come see our fun styles from Weston Wear and Nicole Miller and Ella Moss.
Denim: Not to be overlooked, especially in shirt form, crop jackets and crop pants.
Here’s the skinny: Pants, that is. Looking good with easy t’s and sleeveless shirts. Check out our skinny jeans from AG Rich and Skinny and Fabrizio Gianni.
The Wedge: Sandals with a wedge heel definitely have the edge this spring, looking very fresh—especially in cork, in natural, or in color. Come try on sandals from Donald Pliner and Cordani.
