Congratulations to the winners of Miss Girls’ High 2015. It was an evening filled with style and Girls’ High MAGIC! Miss Girls’ High was held on Thursday, 14 May 2015. The theme for the special evening was ‘Life is a circus - enjoy the ride!’. Hannes van Wyk from Kwêla fame was the MC for the evening. The judges included: AD Muller (A3D Architects), Juanri van Zyl and Juliana du Toit (Image Consultants), Eduan Roos (Fashion Designer), Tarryn Lee Aboud (Redkern representative) and Justine Kroes (Beauty Assistant of Rooi Rose).

Die Eerste Netbalspan van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl was een van 12 genooide spanne wat jaarliks aan die Wildeklawer Toernooi in Kimberley deelneem. Hulle het 7 wedstryde gespeel, waarvan hul slegs een verloor het en teen Affies gelykop gespeel het. Affies is tans die no. 1 skolenetbalspan in S.A. Die meisies het dit baie geniet!

Die koor het op Donderdag 7 Mei in die NG Toringkerk, Paarl, opgetree as deel van die BeKOOR opvoering. Hulle het opgetree saam met die vier puik kore van HJS Paarl, Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Hugenote Hoërskool asook HMS La Rochelle.

Hierdie leerders is onlangs opgeneem in die onderskeie Boland Hokkiespanne: o/18 Wes-Bolandspan: Anje Du Plessis, Berlé Edwards, Danelle Rabie, Kayla de Klerk, Lize Enslin. o/16 Wes-Bolandspan: Nicole Smit, Kayla-Rae Dreyer, Carmen Kirstein, Francia Pretorius, Lize Theunissen en Daneva Moos. o/14 Span: Cady Grain, Hayley Snyman. Baie geluk ook aan Emma Scriba wat gekies is vir die Boland 0/16 A IPT span wat gedurende die vakansie aan die toernooi in Stellenbosch gaan deelneem.

Berlé Edwards has been chosen to represent the Western Province Underwater Hockey Team to participate in the South African Senior National Underwater HockeyChampionship 2015 in Grahamstown. Congratula-tions, Berlé!

A group of Gr 12 Accounting students of Girls’ High took the opportunity to share their Accounting skills with the learners from Ihlumelo Secondary School. Thank you for giving your time, especially on a Friday afternoon, girls. That is what the Girls’ High Magic is all about.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CANNOT READ THE FINE PRINT ANYMORE!Between the ages of 40 and 45, our eyes lose the ability to focus on objects up close. It’s called “presbyopia” and it’s a part of the natural aging process. That doesn’t mean you have to settle for wearing your grandmother’s bifocal eyeglasses, or reading spectacles that fit on the tip of your nose though. Modern contact lenses correct presbyopia and afford clear distance & near vision all in one!!

Most people start experiencing symptoms of presbyopia that include blurring of words - especially on cellphones, eye fatigue when reading, having to hold things further away etc. These symptoms are worse in low light conditions and when the eyes are tired. Over the next 20 years or so, the eyes continue to lose their ability to zoom in on things and by the age of 65, it’s often impossible. This happens as a result of the lens inside the eye that becomes less elastic as time goes by and cannot change its shape in order to ‘zoom’ to see nearby.

Modern contact lens materials are very ‘user-friendly’ and most people get used to their new contact lenses within hours to a few days. WINETASTING

INGREDIENTS:• 20ml peanut or vegetable oil• 6 deboned skinless chicken

thighs cut into bite-sized pieces.• 3 Tbls corn flour• ½ tsp ground white pepper• ½ tsp salt• 1 tsp ground cumin• 6 spring onions with tops, roughly

chopped• 300g Oyster or Shimeji

mushrooms• 3cm fresh ginger, cut into very

thin matchsticks• 3 cloves crushed garlic• 1 red chili, thinly sliced• 2 tbls soy sauce• ½ cup Wellington’s tomato sauce• 1 Tbls runny honey• Freshly chopped coriander• 150ml Veg or chicken stock

METHOD:Place the chicken into a glass bowl with the corn flour, white pepper, salt and cumin – mix together to coat.

Heat the oil in a large wok or frying pan and stir fry the chicken in two batches for 3 minutes. Now return the chicken to the wok and add the mushrooms and spring onions, ginger, garlic and chili.

Cook for 1 minute, stirring; add the soy sauce and tomato sauce, stir well to combine.

Add honey and stock and cook the chicken till done, about another 10 minutes, stir in the coriander and serve with steamed rice or veggie noodles.

MY SPICY CHUNKY SWEET CHILLI CHICKEN Serves 6INGREDIENTS: The Chicken:• 1.5 kg chicken breast fillets,

skinned and deboned• 1 teaspoon grated fresh

ginger• 4 cloves garlic, crushed• 1 level teaspoon paprika• 1 heaped teaspoon cumin

seeds, toasted and roughly bashed

• ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

The Sauce:• 2 tbls olive oil• 1 onion very thinly sliced• 1 red pepper sliced• ½ cup Wellington’s sweet

chilli sauce• Season with salt and pepper,• ½ cup chopped fresh

coriander• METHOD:Cut the chicken into chunks and place in a glass bowl. Add all the ingredients, toss the chicken well so that the chunks are well coated with

the spices, let this rest while you start the sauce. Heat the olive oil and gently fry the onions for 1 minute, add the peppers and stir fry for 1 minutes, add the chicken and cook gently till the chicken is almost cooked through, about 10 minutes, stir in the Wellingtons sweet chilli sauce

and season with salt and pepper, add the lemon juice, zest and coriander and cook till the chicken is done.Remove from the heat and serve.Tip: Serve with steamed rice, Pap or couscous or use as a tasty filling for wraps.

Laerskool Paarl Gimnasium se voorlopige o.13A-dogters hokkiespan het ‘n kort toer onderneem na die Suid-Kaap. Hulle het wedstryde gespeel teen Hoërskool Swellendam se o.16-span en wen 8-0. Hul volgende wedstryd was Laerskool Outeniqua se o.13A-span en wen 2-0.

Laerskool Paarl Gimnasium se o.13A rugbyspan het gedurende die vakansie na Bloemfontein getoer waar hulle in die Grey Kollege Super Series deelgeneem het. Die span het teen top skole van reg oor Suid-Afrika gespeel

en het die laaste dag teen Selbone Kollege gespeel in die finaal van die toernooi waar Gim 28-21 gewen het en is toe die toernooi wenners van Grey Kollege Super Series 2015. Baie geluk aan die span met die mooi prestasie.

Laerskool Paarl Gimnasium is trots op hul twee o.13 Boland hokkiespelers, nl. Tia van Zyl en Quinlynn Kermis wat geurende die Junie-vakansie aan die Nasionale toernooi te Pietermaritzburg gaan deelneem.

Morné Burger en Butch Strasheim is opgeneem in die Shiraz 0.13 Streekspan. Hulle gaan van 29 Junie tot 1 Julie 2015 deelneem aan ‘n toernooi in George. Baie geluk en sterkte, ons is baie trots op julle twee!

Na afloop van die eerste reeks Shiraz-proewe dring Mia Lawrie, Quinlynn Kermis, Shani Botha, Tia van Zyl en Coreen Matthee deur na die volgende rondte.

TAALMONUMENT Afrikaans vier hierdie jaar sy negentigste erkenning as amptelike taal in Suid-Afrika. Die Parlement van die eertydse Unie van Suid-Afrika het Afrikaans op 8 Mei 1925 as amptelike landstaal erken.

Afrikaans is een van net vier tale wat in die vorige eeu suksesvol in alle taalfunksies moderniseer het. Die Gr 4-leerders het die Taalmonument besoek en meer geleer van ons interessante en kleurvolle taal.

Die top netbalskole in die Wes-Boland en Noordwes-Boland het op 1 Mei aan ‘n kompetisie deelgeneem om die Topskool in die WESKUS aan te wys. Dirkie Uys se 0.19A-span het die kompetisie gewen en neem nou op 6 Junie aan die Wes-Kaap

Topskole-kompetisie deel. Dirkie Uys het vir Vredendal met 33 – 21, vir Porterville met 34 – 17 en vir Augsburg met 42 – 20 gewen. Hoërskool Dirkie Uys se 0.14A- en 0.16A-span het albei tweede in hierdie kompetisie geeïndig.

Johan vander Westhuizen, Johandri Truter en Jano Brand het hulself onderskei op die hokkieveld. Die drie seuns is ingesluit in die O/14 Boland Barlinka Streekspan.

Twee van ons oud-blackies saam met nog 2 Wellingtonners! Cornal Hendricks, Vincent Koch (Blackie), Juan de Jong (Blackie) en Schalk Burger.

Ons skoolkoor ‘n puik optrede gehad het tydens die beKOOR konsert in die Paarl. Die aand was gedeel met kore van Girls High, Boys High, La Rochelle en Hoërskool Stellenbosch.

‘n Klomp glimlaggend ouers en voornemende leerders (met amper te min plek in die saal!) het hul opwagting gemaak by ons Opedag vir 2015. Ons sien uit om die jongspan in 2016 hier te verwelkom!

Bartho Visser, ‘n Graad 8 leerling van Hugenote Hoërskool, het van 30 April tot 2 Mei 2015 aan die SA Skole Roeikampioenskap by Roodeplaatdam Pretoria deelgeneem. Hy het in die K2 afdeling 3 brons medaljes verower in die 1000m, 500m en 200m.

Suzanne Wüst, ‘n Graad 11-leerling van Hugenote Hoërskool, is gekeur vir die FSA Jeuguitruilprogram na Duitsland. Sy het ‘n briljante keuringsuitslag gehad van 93.1%. Sy staan ook 1ste Nasionaal en Provinsiaal.

Winand Grundling, die begeleier van ons skoolkoor het ‘n KANNA gewen vir die beste Klassieke musiekproduksie by KKNK 2015.

INTERPROVINSIALE STREEK TOERNOOI Walter Behne, Christiaan Fourie, Nicole Büsse, Blaine Cavernelis, Tiffany Ceaser en Mia Adendorff gaan die Boland streekspanne by die Interprovinsiale streek toernooi verteenwoordig wat 29 Junie - 1 Julie in George gaan plaasvind.
