MOVEMBER ON CAMPUSNothing brings strict teachers, lovely librarians, class clowns, and everyone on campus together like Movember. Rallying around the moustache is a fantastic way to unite a university or school. The level of education doesn’t matter when it comes to having fun while raising funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

GET TALKING Start a conversation about the importance of men’s health by working it into a class project or

hanging a Movember men’s health poster in the halls of your school. You can order really cool promo stuff online.

DON’T MO ALONEThere is strength in numbers, so recruit your whole class or the entire school to join the hairy journey by creating or joining a Movember team.

GROW A MO FOR 30 DAYSMoustaches are Movember. Thin and wispy or thick and full – the size of a Mo doesn’t matter as long it’s in accordance with the official rules: no beards or goatees.

WHAT YOU NEED:24 fat juicy prawns6 Tbs olive oil1 onion, chopped½ red pepper, diced½ yellow pepper, diced700 g ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped¾ tsp dried oregano2 sticks celery, finely chopped4 cloves garlic, chopped1 chilli, chopped½ glass white winesalt and pepper, to taste2 Tbs parsley, chopped1 Tbs dill100 g feta, crushed12 black olives

HOW TO MAKE IT:Devein the prawns and trim the feelers, but keep the heads and shells on. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and fry the onion and peppers until they are translucent. Add the tomatoes, oregano, celery, garlic, chilli and white wine, and cook until the tomatoes are reduced and thick. Season to taste. Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Spoon the sauce into an oven-proof dish

suitable for serving, stir in the herbs and tuck in the prawns. Dot with feta and olives, and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and rest for a few minutes before serving. Serve with a mixed salad and chunks of freshly-baked bread. Messy and delicious!

We had a delicious meal in Glyfada on the quayside of a little harbour. We sipped chilled wine while we waited for our lunch order to be taken

and watched the yachts bobbing up and down on the gentle ripples of the water. When we asked the waiter what he would recommend, he told us we had to have the baby calamari, deep fried white bait and Yiovvetsi.

“What is Yiovvetsi?” I asked. He described a dish of big, fat, juicy prawns with feta and tomato sauce, baked till just done and said that we had to try it. Now this is not a combination that I would necessarily choose –

seafood and cheese – but the way he described it made my mouth water, so we ordered it. I’m so glad we did. I’m still not sure if I got the name

right, but I really don’t care !

Ons kies ‘n persoon wat agtien lang jare reeds by Drakenstein werk. Sy hart en siel klop Drakieland, hy het selfs Drakiebloed. Ons is baie trots op ons skoolhoof wat altyd netjies lyk, streng is met ons kinders en ons skool se belange eerste stel. Hy roem daarop dat hy elke Drakie in die skool se naam ken – voorwaar ‘n prestasie. Onder sy gesag het ons terrein ook baie mooi verbeter. Hy is ‘n “handy man” en het vir ons skool baie geld gespaar met werk wat hy self gedoen het. Ons het ‘n klubhuis gekry, ‘n opgeknapte swembad, selfs ons lugreëlaars is geïnstalleer. Hy het altyd ‘n grappie om mense te laat lag. Ons is gelukkige personeel, ouers en leerders.‘n Drakie in murg en been! Dit is vir ons ‘n groot voorreg om hierdie toekenning aan Mnr Hoffmann te gee!”

Tydens WA Joubert se jaarlikse Erken-ningsaand is Charné Burger en John-Ross Groenewald as ons Sportdogter en –seun aangewys.

Marco Moses (gr 7) was die ontvanger van die Skoolhooftoekenning by Laerskool WA Joubert se Erkenningsaand op Donderdag, 6 November 2014. Hy het die afgelope jaar bewys dat hy daarna streef om die skool se naam op alle terreine hoog te hou. Mnr L Mouton (skoolhoof) het die wens uitgespreek dat hierdie toekenning hom sal aanspoor tot vele prestasies in die hoërskool. Baie geluk! Ons is trots op jou.

As deel van hulle jaarlikse projekte in Gr R, gaan die klein Larries gereeld op uitstappies waar hulle met nuwe dinge kennis maak. Hulle was hierdie week by Butterfly World.

Congratulations to the following learners who participated in the South African Mathematics Challenge: Grace Witbooi and Gretchen Williams (both in Grade 6) who received a silver award each and Sameera Seria and Malikah Kamalie (both in Grade 7) who received a bronze award each. We are really proud of these learners.

Vrydag, 24 Oktober, het Laer Meisieskool La Rochelle hul jaarlikse interhuis-atletiekbyeenkoms by die sportgronde in Brugstraat gehou. Die oggend het begin met die klein Larries in Graad R en al die ouers en leerkragte was in ekstase oor die kleintjies se entoesiasme. Daarna was dit die langafstande en het die dag met aflosse geëindig. Sommer ‘n klomp Larries het beïndruk met hul tegniek en spoed. Hulle begin nou reeds voorberei vir die groot byeenkomste van 2015.

Mevrou Annemarie Blom het die leerders geïnspireer en hulle het ‘n pragtige muurpaneel geskep. Hier pronk hulle by hulle skepping. Hulle het ook pragtige beeldjies uit klei gemaak.Vrydag, 31 Oktober, het die huidige

Gr 1’s ‘n heerlike kuier-oggend vir die voornemende Gr 1 leerders en ouers aangebied. Die Juniorkoor het ook by die geleentheid opgetree.

Baie geluk aan Lobke Kirsten (regs) wat aangewys is as Hoofmeisie vir 2015. Carli van Wyk (links) is aangewys as die Hoërskool Hoofmeisie vir 2015.

Nicky en Cara Viljoen het op Vrydagaand, 7 November, die Boland Sportbanket in die Paarlse stadsaal bygewoon. Hulle het troffees van die Kaapse Wynland Distriksmunisipaliteit ontvang omdat hul Suid-Afrika in Portugal verteenwoordig het.

The Paarl Girls’ High Equestrian Team took part in the Showjumping Interschools at the Evergreen Stables, Bo Daljosafat in Paarl on Saturday, 9 November. The showjumping team came first in the open class, the pre-novice team 2nd and novice team 4th. Well done to all of you!

Die prefekte vir 2015 was in Hermanus op ‘n Leierskapskamp om hulle voor te berei vir die taak wat hulle in 2015 moet verrig. Hulle het verskeie leierskapsessies bygewoon waar hulle onder andere geleer het van leierskap, waardes, dissipline en nog vele ander lekker dinge!

Baie geluk aan die leerders wat verkies is tot die VRL en Matriekraad van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl vir 2015.

Die Gr 6 leerders het vir die Gr. 7 leerders ‘n ongelooflike Artesaand aangebied as afsluiting van die gr. 7 jaar. Die tema was “Alice in Wonderland” en baie moeite is gedoen om die aand so pragtig te laat lyk. Baie dankie vir almal se harde werk!

Op Vrydag 31 Oktober het die leerders van Hoër Meisieskool Paarl ‘n muntlegging ten bate van die Paarl Post Kersfonds gehou.

Op 30 Oktober het Hoër Meisieskool ‘n baie suksesvolle kankerstap gehad. ‘n Roete van 5 kilometer is voltooi en die eerste persoon by die eindpunt was William Dommisse. Die eerste onderwyseres oor die wenstreep was Mev Stegmann! ‘n Mooi bedrag van R2 470 is ingesamel en aan Paarl Hospice oorhandig. We would like to thank each and every one who contributed to this very special event, including the municipality, as well as the excellent assistance of our traffic department. We trust this will become an annual event, growing each year in numbers and participation.

By die onlangse Boland Skolesport Vereniging se banket in die Stadsaal, het Gézelle Magerman van die Hoër Meisieskool La Rochelle vier toekennings ontvang, naamlik: Atletiek, Nasionale Kleure, Presidentstoekenning en Sportvrou van die Jaar. By haar staan mev. Marianna Schoeman, Atletiekorganiseerder van La Rochelle.

In die Dogtersafdeling het die Larries met 382 die Spanbeker voor Gimnasium (371) opgeraap, met HMS in die derde plek met 309 punte. Hier ontvang die Larrie Atletiekkapteins, Gézelle Magerman en Robyn-Lee Adams die Beker van hul skoolhoof, me Amanda Lochner. La Rochelle het ook die D/14- en D/17-Ouderdomsgroepafdelings gewen.

Tydens die afgelope Interskole Atletiekbyeenkoms te Brugstraat het HJS, Gimnasium, La Rochelle, HMS en Boland Landbou deelgeneem.

Vir die “afsitter” Sidney Bartlett was dit ‘n groot geleentheid. Hy tree na 41 jaar by HJS af. Die 4 x 100m aflos-wedloop tussen die oudstudente van HJS en Gim is vir die eerste keer aangebied, en was gereël ter ere van Mnr Bartlett en sal voortaan jaarliks plaasvind.

Die HJS-span het bestaan uit Conradie Burger, Stephen O’Brien, Daryll Oosthuizen en Kobus Barnard (bestuur en afgerig deur Sakkie Smit) wat ook ‘n rekord opgestel het.

Altus Karsten het die afgelope twee weke aan twee internasionale o.18-tennistoernooie in Stellenbosch deel-geneem. Hy het in albei toernooie deurgedring tot in die eindrondte van die dubbels. In die enkels het hy in beide toernooie in posisie 9 - 16 geëindig.

Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai Great White Shark Cage Diving Company treated the boys, accompanied by Mr Kobus Conradie and Mr Jacques Grobbelaar to breakfast and were given a short talk on the dos and don’ts of shark cage diving. It’s a thrilling experience seeing the great white in its natural environment fosters a newfound appreciation for the elegant creature that scythes through the water with ease.

Boland Landbou “Slagpale”Boland Landbouskool is baie trots op hulle nuwe buitelug oefenapparaat wat gedoop is as die “Slagpale”. Die uitleg sowel as al die verskillende stasies is baie noukeurig gedoen en goed beplan sodat alle spiergroepe effektief ontwikkel kan word. Die groot voordeel van die “Slagpale” is dat die seuns met hulle eie liggaamsgewig werk tydens oefeninge en dat elke stasie vir verskeie sportkodes gebruik kan word sodat die oefeninge funksioneel is tot elke sportkode. Die “Slagpale” is met trots geborg deur Megared Ceres.
