introduction

meThoD We link-up theory and practice in all aspects of lighting design. no limit to technology, de-sign or human perception but tackling long time neglected aspects like: communicating light, project handling, and to preconceive the conditions on site. our motivation is our passion for light, a philosophy reflected in everything we do.

6

Theory anD pracTiceWe teach visual judgement. Technical princi-ples and the laws of physics are exploited to the full when they are employed to solve pro-blems. We confront our participants with the adversities and pitfalls of everyday working life and then assist them in finding innovative and appropriate solutions.

ToolboxDuring the week the participants get a growing ‘toolkit’ for self-directed working. They are taught skills and provided with tools for technical, creative and conceptual design as well as for working with light and mana-ging projects as a group.

hanDS onWe study and experiment. everything the stu-dents learn they also handle, operate and in-stall. We have the barn of boisbuchet as our lecture theatre. The topic of our study unit is related to the place where the course is held.

moTivaTionWe are lighting designers, architects, urban planners, engineers, designers and thinkers with passion. The driving force for everything we do is the joy of work. We live learn and teach by this philosophy.

concepTrhyThm, Space + movemenTliGhTinG in The 20´SThe lighting that surrounds us today has its roots in the 20s and 30s of the 20th cen-tury. electric lighting took over the public realm and changed our daylight dependent rhythm. new lamp technologies popped up and architects and designers developed new luminaire designs. Today we experience so-mething similar in the world of lighting: leDs allow new design and shapes and once again change our feeling of light.

This year we’re are building pendent lu-minaires, small lustres and suspended ligh-ting objects to understand the effect of light on the feeling of the space. To make sure that designing, thinking and trying out doesn’t exhaust your mind we shake up with swing dancing. a small swing dance workshop with music takes us back to the atmosphere of the 20s and 30s and for sure brings lots of fun.

This document aims to record our pre-sence and participation in the Domaine de boisbuchet workshop from 1/7 july 2012.

angela

Angela is from Mexico and she feels at home when she spends time with her dog.

Through the workshop, she has “learned how to understand light as a material. Which is one of the most powerful tools a designer can develop.” furthermore, she ex-plains that “when sources are limited a re-flector has the potential to develop a small spot of light into a big area.”

anne-Marie

Anne-Marie was born in France, and lives in Madrid. She feels at home when she is traveling.

on embarking on this project, she illustra-tes: “looking at the dot, creating light. from dot to infinity, bending and dancing lights.” Discussing this effect, anne-marie says “i was intrigued and wished to ex-periment with the intimate light of the 20s and how it can shape meaning.” further-more, “how would this translates into the 21st century with leDs scarce soft light, as it seems contradictory.”

Birgit

Brigit is from Eindhoven, The Netherlands and feels at home when she can prepare a meal to share with her friends.

monday morning: “playtime starts. finding unexpected poetic results, all giving off po-werful energy. continue experimentation to yield the original version of light.” brigit was inspired by the space and materials for experiments with the presentations; in addition the dancing to release energy and completing the week with a book, great! The environment and the people help to continue her dream of becoming a designer.

daniela

Daniela is from Mexico, and she feels at home when she visits her parents.

Describing her process, Daniela says “light cannot be contained; it projects itself in different ways and changes its appearan-ce. light gives life to inanimate objects by projecting through diverse materials and surfaces.” Daniela came to boisbuchet with preconceived notions about light. as the week progressed, her understanding of light has evolved. from a conceptual per-spective, “light connects people to diffe-rent emotions.” in fact, light also influences perception. it indicates safety and danger, happiness and sadness, obscurity and cla-rity, etc. in utilizing light as a tool, “we have the power to alter reality.” projecting light onto a surface can change its essence: a space can be created where there is none.

elif

Elif is from Istanbul, and she feels at home when she visits her mum.

monday: i just wanted to witness the hyp-notizing effect of light behind the texture. Twesday: reflection is an essential notion of life itself, as well as light. Wednesday: experimenting with objects, materials, dimensions, and space turned out to be interesting. Thursday: it’s amazing how ideas, starting from point zero, can come into fruition.

indeed, “i find experimenting and the cu-riousness of my group very inspiring. i have noticed that it does not matter how much experience you have in the past working with light, there is always something new to discover. Teamwork has allowed us to exchange ideas and, together, we are more creative.” lastly, “if our mind is get-ting tired, we know it’s booGieTime!!”

Mark

Mark is from Zürich and feels at home when he can play with his nephews.

Through his work, he wrapes a point light into a soft shell and sprays light into the vo-lume. following this process, he asks: “how can i illuminate the letter “o” without ben-ding a stiff, straight leD line?” This seems impossible, however, after some experimen-tation, he found that a light line does not produce shadows as a “light point.”

This past week has influenced her immense-ly, “When i said that i was traveling alone back to paris, ricardo and Tullia grabbed a map and drew the nicest places to visit.” The community at boisbuchet has also been fun. During the dinner, we spoke about writing and the potential to create a movie script from original written material.” her project incorporates only one theme, “not too much,” she says, “while mixing two dif-ferent things, we must notice the balance.”

AndreA • LucA

Andrea is from Mexico, and she feels at home when she feels her body dancing.

on her process, she outlines several key points: “light, in addition to music, gives volume to life; it works beyond the fourth dimension. Secondly, light is born from shadows. Thirdly, light enhances cultural triumphs over ignorance, which cultivates knowledge, gives rhythm to life and af-fords new possibilities of human percep-tion.” lastly, andrea says that “light is a luminous element that designs ambience and space it is content in atmosphere yet it manifests from it.”

Luca is from Mexico, and he feels at home when he can just do his laundry.

on his process, luca says that “light ma-kes materials dance in a moving world. light unveils the path of walking, dancing, in order to create interaction.” This wor-kshop has influenced his personal vision, “i dreamed that i live in a real world. i did not know if it was actually visualized this world, or i felt it.”
