Back up and Restoration of BIAR file for BO XI 3.1

NARESH VENKATA [email protected] is a BIAR file?Business Intelligence Archive Resource (BIAR) files are a packaging tool for managed content in a Business Objects Enterprise system. They can be used to archive folders and objects in the Enterprise repository so that they can be easily transferred to a different location. This is useful for making backups, and moving BI applications from a development environment to a production environment.The BIAR file can store the following objects

a) Users & Groups

b) Folders

c) Events

d) Repository objects

e) Universes

f) Calendars

g) Objects(reports)

h) Custom Access Levels

i) Server Groups

Pre requisites to take back up of BO XI 3.1 application objectsa) BO XI 3.1 client required to be installed on a windows machine, because Import wizard is the tool totake back up and that would work only in windows environment.

b) The Windows login id should have administrative privileges on the windows machine.

c) BO XI 3.1 Administrator id credentials have to be mentioned in the Import wizard for the import to be proper.

Steps to take BOXI 3.1 backup in to a BIAR file1) Open Import wizard on any windows machine which is in same network in which Windows machine and Production BO server are present.

2) Click Next and Specify the source Environment Details.

3) Click Next and Specify Destination Environment.

4) Select the kind of objects that has to be imported.

Note: Select Import calendars if any calendars are defined for scheduling the reports. Other wise the scheduling information set in the source system wont be reflected in destination system.

5) The wizard would guide through the remaining steps.

6) Select Users & Groups that has to be imported

8) Select folders and reports that has to be imported

10) Select the import options for universes

11) The universes corresponding to the selected reports have to be shown checked by default.

12) Select the import options for repository objects

14) Click Finish to start the import.

15) Click View Detail Log to see the status of import whether all objects are imported properly or not.

16) If all objects are imported properly to the BIAR file then save that BIAR file in some location with some time stamp and can be used for restoration if needed.

Restoration of BO XI 3.1 objects from BIAR file

1) Start the import wizard to import objects from .BIAR to destination BO XI 3.1 server.

2) Click next and specify the destination environment.

4) Wizard would guide through the remaining steps as described above for the backup procedure.RecommendationsI. A regular back up of BO XI 3.1 application is recommended in form of a BIAR file during development phase and a weekly backup frequency when there are relatively less changes happening in further phases and in production. II. Backup and restoration procedures are recommended to be performed when there is no user activity on the application.
