Our club volunteers did an outstanding job - everything was perfect. We had great weather, great fishing and a very large crowd. Your club cooked and served over 1100 hot dogs, along with chili, chips and cookies. Most of the time you could not see the end of the line, it was like the energizer bunny - it just wouldn't stop. Great job everyone!!! For the July 10th meeting we had arranged to have Dan Hernandez. Dan was very sorry to say he couldn’t make it. One of his major sponsors needed him the same day, so he unfortunately had to decline. We have Bob Woodard Jr. though, coming in to give us a taste of Halibut fishing. He will discuss tackle, techniques and even share some locations! So don’t miss this one, we will certainly learn something new. I would like to thank all of those who came out to help us set up, cook, serve, and clean up afterwards for the Lindo Lake’s Kids Catfish Derby that was held on Saturday June 7, 2008. volunteers to make every one of these events as successful as possible. Don’t forget that the July meeting has been changed to July 10th due to the 4th of July Holiday weekend. Our guest speaker unfortunately will not be Dan Hernandez; he advised us that he will not be able to make the meeting. A new speaker has been lined up … Bob Woodard Jr. will be sharing his success in Halibut fishing.

Weigh Master: By: Fox Ludwig

Well, it figures the winning yellowtail was caught by a non-member, Sonya Vanderveen, for our June 14th Yellowtail tournament. Her fish weighed 19.40 lbs! It also figures that she was fishing with our 2007 men’s angler of the year, Steve Stachelski!! Steve actually came in 2nd Place with a 19.08

lb yellowtail. Janet Fleming had 3rd place with an 11.92 lb yellowtail. Cheri Fleming had 4th place with an 8.82 lb Yellowtail and she receives 4 sports points. Bill Fleming had 5th Place with an 8.7 lb Yellowtail for 4 sports points. Billy Roach had the winning bass with a nice calico weighing in at 4.20 pounds to win the big side pot, Good Job Billy! Shimano rods and reels will be given out at our next meeting for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Angler of the year Sports Points are issued 5 points for 1st place, 4 points for 2nd place and 3 points for 3rd place, in all three categories of Men’s, Women’s and Juniors. It was pretty ruff outside with the wind and swells, but all in all it was a great tournament. The turnout and participation at the barbeque, with hamburgers and hotdogs being served, was great. Thanks for the help on the grill from Jason Scheiner. Our next tournament is scheduled for July 19th. All the details will be announced at the next meeting (July 10th, 2008) due to possible changes, depending on the location and distance of the illusive Tuna this year. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to call me on my cell phone 619-610-8426 Make sure you show up for our next meeting on July 10th for all the details.

Until then, take a kid fishing, it will bring you luck! Remember, tight lines and sharp hooks. Fox

Tournament Master: Lee “Doc” Fleming

Congratulations to Steve, Sonya, and Janet for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Yellowtail tourney. Fishing was very difficult out there on Saturday the 14th. Very few fish were caught. Billy Roach finally finished in the money on the side pot bet. He was pitching the big slug from MC Swimbaits. Congrats Billy! July 19th will be our next tournament. Scheduled is the "Tuna and Tails". Tuna qualifies as: albacore, bluefin, yellowfin, big eye, and skipjack. The side pot will be yellowtail. There is a bit of a problem known as fuel costs. We discussed this at the board meeting and decided to leave the option to change the targeted species if the regular tournament contestants so desire. Regardless of the species, lines in at first light, weigh in at Shelter Island Wave at 1700-1800 hours (for those

who are mathematically challenged, t = 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.). The usual rules apply … weigh your single heaviest fish for sports points and the largest yellowtail will win the side pot. Mission Bay / Oceanside boats (the only other ports in San Diego County, see rules) may drive their catch over by car. This is a later weigh in than usual so there will be no BBQ unless someone else would like to volunteer to bring the grill and pick up the goodies.

OK everyone, we have lots of shirts! Our short sleeve shirts and men & ladies tanks are in. We have dark and light colors. The price will be $15 each or two for $25. We still have a close out price of $8.00 on the Big Fish 2007 shirts. We also have all the other long sleeve, sweatshirts, and hats. For the first time in years we had some full color club decals made, so get yours at the next meeting and stick it somewhere so that

everyone knows you are a proud member of our club. Hope to see you on the water! Clothing Director,

Raffle Master: Billy Roach June’s Meeting went well. Please remember that if you purchase $100 at any of the meetings, we will give you an extra $20 worth of tickets. That’s 180 tickets instead of 150! Well, it seems like we have left our bad streak of no one pulling their own ticket for months at a time. For the last couple of months the prizes have been won at each meeting. Not just 1 person has pulled there own ticket at these meetings, but numerous people each month. Sorry, we only have one prize and it is first come first pull… So, the reel was only one grab. At the June meeting, the first one to pull their own ticket was John Plemons Sr. - Congratulation’s John on winning the reel in the “Pull Your Own Ticket” event. In July we will have a new prize on the table for the first person that pulls their own ticket; therefore, the more tickets you

buy, the better chance you have of pulling your own ticket. I still want your opinion on what you want to see on thraffle table. We have been trying to mix things up. If anyone has learned of any new products or vendors that they think I should look at, pleasme know. Do you want themed raffles targeted toward the tournament we have that month, mostly terminal tackle, more rod & reels? Please talk to me at the meetings, email me at

The Big Fish Tournament is just around the corner. I wanted to remind everyone there is a category for smaller boats and fishing closer to shore, so you don’t need a large boat or spend a lot of money on fuel to enjoy the tournament. Anyone interested that doesn’t have a boat and would like to fish on another boat should speak with me at the next meeting - I’m sure we can accommodate you. Whether you are fishing the tournament or not, we still want to encourage everyone to be at the seminar and banquet. These events are open to everyone, not just tournament entrants, so put the word out and bring your family and friends. The entire club runs everything, not just the board. So, if you want to make a major contribution, just put the word out for the tournament and the seminar – it’s as simple as that. I will be taking names and speaking at the next club meeting if anyone can assist at weigh-ins and any in any other capacity. Just let me know.

Categories for this year are:

Bill Fish - $5000 Tuna - $3000 IGFA* - $2000

*Yellowtail, Dorado, Halibut, and White Sea Bass. Shark is a side pot category with prizes based on entries. Thank you for all your efforts and help to make this year’s Big Fish Tournament a success! Tight lines, Brent Koerting Big Fish Director [email protected]

At the June meeting you could feel the anticipation. We had 35 members and 6 guests in attendance to hear Cory Sanden give us some tips and tricks on using his Swimbaits. Those members who brought the guest received 10 extra raffle tickets. Remember to invite your friends to attend a meeting as your guest and received 10 extra raffle tickets for yourself. If they become a member that night, you receive 10 more raffle tickets for a total of 20. Speaking of new members, we had 3 people join at the June meeting. Please join me in welcoming Rodney L Green, John Vetcher and Kerry Blanchard to the San Diego Rod and Reel Club. Be sure to introduce yourselves at the next meeting and say hi when you see them on the water. With these new members, and a number of members who recently renewed, our membership list is now up to 133 active members. We will continue to do new and innovating things to draw members to the club. Did you remember to sign in at the last meeting? I hope the new

For all of you that have not had an opportunity to attend a recent meeting to pick up your new badges, I’ve mailed them out to you. If you ordered a badge and haven’t received it yet, please let me know. Also remember to participate in the badge raffle by wearing your badge to the meeting. It’s also a good idea to wear your badge as it lets new members and guests know who you are. Have you noticed that gas prices are getting a little high? Actually they are out of control! Most of us with boats are really seeing this and with fuel on the water reaching $6 gallon, solo runs are hard to justify. So, how do we still get out there and do what we all love doing? By partnering up with other fellow club members to go boating with and share the expense of being on the water. At the next meeting I’ll have a “trip sharing list” for those members with private boats who are looking for someone to go with on a trip that they are planning. If this has some interest, we will keep this going with future meetings. Well, that’s it for this month. Let me know if there is any other information that you would like for me to put together and I’ll get it going.

Gary Mouritzen

Thanks to those who have been turning in pictures. On one hand, it’s great to see all the catches, but then my jealousy kicks in because I really haven’t been able to fish yet. Now that Little League is over and Gabriel got his 1st place trophy, my jealousy turns to being proud of my son and the joy of being there for him. But now… it’s time to fish! On June 17th, there was a report of some guys catching Albies North-West of the 371. I’m always leery about those reports. So, I looked on BloodyDecks.com and sure enough … it was true!

By the way, Bob Woodard Jr. got one as well …

One on a Rapala and the other on a small jet head. YES! They’re Here!!! More at the 321, one on the way to the 302, etc. Are you as excited as I am?!!! Cedar plugs, jets, B/P, bait on the slide. At the 425 there was a 32lb Bluefin! Go out there and get ‘em!

… and then, on another day,

TWO More!!! (where are my steaks Bob?!!!)

Tips ‘n Tricks for All Ocean Anglers By Jerry Esten

1. When casting with a conventional reel, don’t thumb the line on the spool, but rather the side of the spool. You will have more control and cast more efficiently.

2. The ‘click” on the conventional reel has a purpose. Use it when the rod is unattended or while trolling (still unattended) the reel will “sing” out.

3. If you are fishing smaller species like bass, bonito, and barracuda, you simply do NOT need 400 yards of expensive line. Use backing of any sort, twine, or Dacron. Your tackle dealer keeps it on hand for that purpose, so should you. I find 100 yards on top is plenty.

4. Fill your reel, full reels cast better, both conventional and spinning.

5. When you are through fishing and after you rinse your reels with fresh water, back off the drag. This will the pressure off the drag washers, and give them a longer life.

6. Your reel needs little oil. Loading your reel with oil can make the drag system less effective.

7. Balance your rod & reel, you don’t need a 4/0 reel on a light rod.

8. Light weight plastic and aluminum spools cast better, overcome inertia with out the “lurch” of the heavy steel spool, and run more smoothly.

9. Fishing deep with mono line and light spools (aluminum and plastic) may “tweak” your spools and put them out-of-round rendering them useless. Remember, mono has a “memory” if it’s stretched it will try to return to it’s original length, thus crushing the spool.

10. Use Dacron, a line that won’t stretch for deep water.

11. Once you have adjusted your drag appropriately, leave it alone! There is no way to know how much you are tightening when you are fighting a fish. If you’re being “spooled” you have nothing to lose. You may consider tying a back up outfit to the first and chuck the original overboard and hope you can stop the big fish. This practice is not unusual on long-range trips to Mexican waters, particularly with yellow fin tuna.

12. For the type of fishing kayakers and other small craft operators do, a few basic knots are usually enough. The Palo mar is the strongest and simple to tie. I like the Improved Clinch knot too, easier to tie when using a big jig.

Page 10: Bluewater Bulletin - San Diego Rod And Reelsandiegorodandreel.com/2008/PDF'S/July 2008/BWB July 2008.pdf · Fishing Derby on Crystal Pier, Saturday, August 16th. The Derby is the

13. Lead: use the amount you must, no more no less. When the action is on the surface don’t plunge to the bottom. With surface fish exploding on the surface, opt for “Fly Lining”, no sinker at all. NO swivel either.

14. I am convinced that lures catch more fish, no not always, but often enough to make me a believer.

15. Lures: variety is the spice of life, if one won’t get ‘em, the other will. It’s usually consistency that pays off, other times a different color may do the trick.

16. Heavier lures run deeper, you need a variety to meet conditions. You must fish where the fish are.

17. Monofilament, store it out of the sun and heat is the recommended care by the manufacturers. I must tell you though, I had Izorline Company test some 30-year-old line that was stored in my garage. I had been using it with no problem. It tested as it was meant to. It was well wrapped and out of the light.

The question is however, are you going to spend a small fortune on a trip only to have bad line? I think not. Your line is really all you have between you and your quarry.

18. Spare spools are a must, many conventional reels have the quick-change feature. All spinning reels do. In a kayak we need all the space we can get.

19. Swivels: Don’t use them for surface fishing except in some very special situations. Such as using with a wire leader for Wahoo. Some lure makers suggest you use a swivel with their product. I trust they tested it and know what they are talking about.

20. Show courtesy to party boats when you are off their stern and benefiting from their chum, Keep a good distance away lest a jig "accidentally" comes whistling by your ear, or worse.

21. Try a heavy jig as a sinker when rock cod fishing, tie it at the bottom of your ganion. You now have an extra way of catching fish. There is a 7.5 0z. Jerry Jig from Izorline, it is ideal for this technique Jerry Jig from Izorline is great for using this technique.

22. Guides wear out. Check them periodically, especially the tip top. A worn guide may fray your line.

23.The tip top should always be high quality. Good tips are very hard and won’t cut.

24. If you are fishing off a kelp bed, or anywhere else for that matter, and there is no action, move to another spot.

25. Watch for bird activity, they fish better than we do. If they are active, that’s where you need to be.

Page 11: Bluewater Bulletin - San Diego Rod And Reelsandiegorodandreel.com/2008/PDF'S/July 2008/BWB July 2008.pdf · Fishing Derby on Crystal Pier, Saturday, August 16th. The Derby is the

26. Fish the area between the kelp and the beach. You can pick up halibut bass and many species that inhabit the surf zone. Of course caution is a must, lest a sneak wave swamps you.

27. A 2-piece paddle though not as strong as a one piece has a few advantages. You can store it in a hatch in case your or a buddy loses one. It can be used like a canoe paddle for trolling. It won’t hit your line.

28. A single hook, or fixed hook jig, like a Clobber or a Bada Bing can make do as a gaff in a pinch.

29. Barracuda and bonito are excellent food fish, the secret is to bleed them at once, clean as soon as possible, keep cool and use ice as soon as it’s available. Sitting in the sun all day will guarantee you an unpalatable meal. These 2 fish in particular don’t deserve the bad rap they get.

30. Don’t take a fish out of the water by grasping the lure, it can be dangerous. Violent head shaking may imbed a treble hook in your hand. If this seems to contradict tip #28, keep in mind that tip #28 refers to a single fixed hook jig. Even then caution is a must.

California Marine Life Protection Act Initiative 1416 Ninth Street, Suite 1311 Sacramento, CA 95814 916.653.5656

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: Melissa Miller-Henson (MLPA Initiative) June 13, 2008 530.400.2545 Steve Martarano (CDFG) 916.322.8639

Public Workshops Scheduled to Begin MLPA Initiative South Coast Project SACRAMENTO – Workshops are scheduled this month and next to introduce the public to the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative’s South Coast Project. The overall goals of the workshops are to orient people to the MLPA Initiative process, specifically in the MLPA South Coast Study Region (state waters from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County south to the California border with Mexico, including offshore islands), generate nominations for a regional stakeholder group, invite questions, and solicit input on the process. “Our goal is to help the state conserve marine life and habitat by designing a network of marine protected areas along the entire coast of California in order to restore a healthy ocean ecosystem,” said Susan Golding, chair of a task force overseeing the planning process. “The public’s participation is vital to our ability to do this successfully.” The workshops will use an “open house” format where attendees may choose to visit at any time during the three hours and walk through a number of informational stations. Key information stations include an overview of the MLPA Initiative process and timeline; the status of marine protected areas in California; and how the public can get involved. Staff will be available at each station so that attendees may ask questions and provide feedback. The first series of workshops are scheduled for:

• Santa Barbara on Monday, June 23, 2008: Louise Lowry Davis Recreation Center, 1232 De La Vina St., 805-897-2568

• Oxnard on Tuesday, June 24, 2008: South Oxnard Center, 200 E. Bard Road (located next to the South Oxnard Branch Library), 805-385-8362

• Santa Monica on Wednesday, June 25, 2008: Ken Edwards Center, 1527 Fourth St., 310-458-8300.

A second set of workshops are scheduled for:

• Huntington Beach on Tuesday, July 8, 2008: Huntington Beach Harbor View Club House, 16600 Saybrook Lane, 714-536-5486

• Carlsbad on Wednesday, July 9: Hilton Garden Inn, 6450 Carlsbad Boulevard, 760-476-0800

• San Diego on Thursday, July 10: Holiday Inn Express Old Town, 3900 Old Town Boulevard, 619-299-7400.

All workshop times are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“The next phase of the MLPA Initiative will again afford many opportunities for public involvement, which begins with this series of workshops from Santa Barbara to San Diego,” said Executive Director Ken Wiseman. “We’re excited to continue moving forward using an ongoing, transparent, dynamic public process, continually integrating the lessons we learn along the way.” The MLPA Initiative is a public-private partnership designed to help the State of California implement the MLPA, which was enacted in 1999. The MLPA directs the state to reexamine and redesign California’s system of marine protected areas (MPAs) with the goal of increasing its coherence and effectiveness at protecting the state’s marine life and habitats, marine ecosystems, and marine natural heritage, as well as to improve recreational, educational and study opportunities in marine ecosystems that are subject to minimal human disturbance. MPAs are discrete geographic marine or estuarine areas designed to protect or conserve marine life and habitat. A regional approach is being used in the MLPA Initiative process, where California’s 1,100-mile coastline has been divided into five study regions. In September of 2007, regulations for the first of the five study regions were implemented for the central coast (Pigeon Point in San Mateo County to Point Conception in Santa Barbara County). In the second study region, four proposals for redesigning MPAs in the north central coast (Alder Creek in Mendocino County to Pigeon Point in San Mateo County) were presented on Wednesday, June 11 to the California Fish and Game Commission at a special meeting in Sacramento. North central coast regulations are expected to be adopted by the commission by the end of the year. While the commission considers north central coast MPAs, the MLPA Initiative is moving to the south coast study region. After the south coast planning process is completed, the north coast process will begin (Alder Creek north to the California border with Oregon), followed by the San Francisco Bay process (from the Golden Gate Bridge northeast to the Carquinez Bridge). A specific timetable for the remaining study regions has yet to be established. A blue ribbon task force is overseeing the process and near the end of 2009 will make a final recommendation regarding south coast MPA proposals to the commission.
