Oracle BI By Bakboord - 2011 in review (2012-01-02 13:12)

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

    [1]

    Heres an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 70,000times in 2011. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 3 days forthat many people to see it.

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 11.1.1.6.0 (2012-03-12 11:31)

Although Oracle BusinessIntelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 11.1.1.6.0 has already been released afew weeks ago, I thought I would be nice to write some sort of wrap-up post with some interesting linksto documents and various websites.

The latest version of Oracle BI 11g is available on [1]OTN as well as on [2]eDelivery.

Of course you should start by reading the [3]documentation. The [4]11.1.1.6.0 docs have been duplicated

compared to 11.1.1.5.0. Maybe because there is an additional part reserved for Oracle [5]Exalytics. Asalways there is a lot of buzz around the Oracle BI Blogosphere. [6]Christian has a nice up-to-date

Link Library with a list of interesting websites with regards to 11.1.1.6 documentation and functionalityposts/docs/etc.

    Upgrading from 10g to 11g (Update) (2012-03-14 13:30)

In preparation of an Oracle BI Applications (OBIA) upgrade to OBIA 7.9.6.3, I have been runningthe Oracle BI 11.1.1.6 [1]Upgrade Assistant. Just to see whether we could expect (serious) issues. Onthe otherhandIwas curious howthe Oracle BI 10g SecurityGroups would upgradetothe Oracle BI11g Application Roles. Application Roles are managed via the the Enterprise Manager (Policy Store -[2]system-jazn-data.xml). Actually [3]Rittman Mead are running a 5-part series on Oracle BI 11g Securityat the moment.

The Oracle BI Application Security is configured as [4]follows in Oracle BI 10g. The responsibilities

in Oracle eBS are created as groupsin Oracle BI.Afterupgradingto11gthese groups are created asApplications Roles. If you check the in the Oracle BI 11g Weblogic Console, you would see that theresponsibilities are also created as groups. These groups are created for Authentication (confirming theidentityofa user)purposes. The Applicationroles are createdfor the Authorization(specifying access

    rights).

I have been blogging about the [5]upgrade from 10g to 11g earlier. There doesnt seem to be anymajor difference in the Upgrade Assistant in 11.1.1.6. You basically have to follow the same steps as inthe previous versions.

After the upgrade I ran the Consistency Checker. A few Warnings caught my eye. I havent seenthose before so I guess they are introduced in Oracle BI 11g.

    > NQSError 39051 (Warnings) - Application Role ***** is not defined in the Enterprise Manager.

There are 2 options to solve these errors:

Remove the Application Role from ....

.... the Policy Store via the Enterprise Manager

.... the Reporsitory (RPD) via the Identy Manager in the Oracle BI Administration Tool.

    >NQSError39062(Warnings) Initialization Block*****uses Connection Pool *****.*****whichis used for report queries. This may impact query performance.

Its common practice to create an additional Initialization Block for Session variables. Check [6]Nicolasblog for more details on the Oracle BI Connection Pools.

    Cheers.

Oracle Endeca Information Discovery (EID) (2012-03-22 15:18)

I attended two Oracle conferences over the last few weeks. There was a [1]Oracle Technology Conference

2012 in Brussels and a [2]ExalyticsLaunch Power Premiere in Utrecht. At boththese events there wasspecial attention for [3]Endeca. Oracle Endeca Information Discovery (EID) to be precise. Oracle Endecais an addition to the already existing Oracle BI Foundation (Oracle BI EE, Scorecarding, Essbase, etc.).The traditional Oracle BI is mainly focused on Structured Data. With the acquisition of Endeca, Oracleadded functionality to index and analyse both structured as well as unstructured data. This adds thepossibility to come to new insights which you do not have to model upfront.

Triggered by the authors of [4]Endeca123.com I decided to download Endeca myself and play aroundwith it. Thefirststeps are easyas1-2-3 and withinthe hour you can haveyour firstEndeca SampleApplication up and running. Just download the [5]Endeca Quickstart from the Oracle Software DeliveryCloud and start playing around.

It will be interesting if and how Oracle will integrate Endeca into their standard offerings. WillOracle BI11g replace the dashboarding capabilities? Last week the [1]announcement came that there has been a Patch (13742915) released for Oracle BI EE11.1.1.6.1. This Patch can be dowloaded via [2]Oracle Support (Login required).

If you want to apply the Patch, you have to perform a few steps. These steps can differ, de-

pending on which steps you may or may not already have executed.

Start by downloading the Patch first.

    Download Patch 13742915

    1. Navigate to Patches & Updates2. Search for Patch 137429153. Select the required OS (I installed on Windows 64-bit)4. Dowload the Patch

When the Patch has been dowloaded, go to your Oracle BI environment for the installation ofthe Patch. The following steps have to be performed.

    4. Apply Patch using Opatch (See below)5. Start all BI Services6. Test the Patch7. If needed, rollback the Patch (See below)

    Apply Patch using Opatch

Note: Make sure all BI Services have stopped

Check Oracle Support; OBIEE 11g: How to Apply Patches Using Opatch (Id - 1220799.1)

    1. Verify whether you have (the latest) version of [3]Opatch installed

    a) If needed install a new version of the Opatch utility (See below)Make sure ....

... the ORACLE HOME variable exists > set ORACLE HOME=MIDDLEWARE HOME\OracleBI1

    - Side-note from Oracle: You are setting ORACLE HOME for this command-prompt session only.

This is set to only facilitate patch application/rollback/inventory, etc. Do not make this a permanent environment variable as it will affect other Oracle Products running on your system which may need a permanent ORACLE HOME environment variable.-

Day I of the Rittman Mead BI Forum 2012 started ofwith a Masterclass provided by [1]Kevin McGinley.

Het took us on a journey along the Oracle BI Action Framework, Oracle Scorecards and StrategyManagement, Oracle Mobile, Oracle BI 11g Customizations.

Some notes about the subjects covered:

There is a whole world next or behind Oracle BI 11g; Oracle BI Action Framework. Not allevenly well documented!! Even more interesting to explore.

Consider OSSM - Oracle Scorecards and Strategy Management as a 3th (next to reports - BIPublisher and Analysis - Oracle BI Answers) way to deliver data to your end-user.OSSM provides features Oracle BI Publisher / Answers cannot deliver.

Using OSSM for traditional Oracle BIIts the new kid on the blog so it needs some more fine tuning and there is a lot (more) to learn.Probably not so much a technical challenge as it is at the cultural / process side

Mobile ApplificationTrends to 33 % Mobile BI in 2012IsOracle BI Mobile a real mobile app or is it just a web GUI presented via a mobile device (iPad / iPod)?Compared to 3th party tools like [2]RoamBI / [3]SurfBI, they tend to have more mobile functionality.Whether the analytical capabilities are better remains to be seen. Both applications (including somedemo content) are to be downloaded from Apple Appstore.

Customization in Oracle BI 11g at the client-side or the server-side. There is more then oneway to skin a cat. Start [4]here.

Customization means backup and document each file and modifications to these file. These way youshould be safe in case of an upgrade.

Check [5]here for an impression of the various customizations you could apply to an Oracle BI11g application.

Day I of the Rittman Mead BI Forum 2012 ended (besides a delicious meal) with a Keynote provided by

Oracle (Alan Lee and Mike Durran). First Alan thanked us for being Oracle BI evangelistic. I guess athanks back is well in place for a great product (portfolio).

Nothing spectacular to announce. I guess luckily for us, because it has been a busy year ;-).

    A few notes:

Oracle BI will be Oracle (Business) Analytics

Next to the Oracle BI Foundation products like Endeca, Big Data (is this a product or a process),Engineered Systems (Big DataAppliance, Exadata, Exalytics) have been covered. Especially the last two

products were subject to discussion. How do Exadata and Exalytics work together? We were presentedwith a Exalytics demo. Do you need to now where the data is coming from (TimesTen Oracle BI Cache)or is the fact that the data is retrieved very fast enough? This discussion will continue when Mike Durrandoes his presentations. Personally Iwouldliketo now wherethe datais comingfrom anI wasnt the only

    RM BI Forum Notes - Wrap-up (2012-05-14 13:53)

Last week I have tried to give you an impression about the Rittman Mead BI Forum 2012. They managedto provide us with a four day program packed with all things related to Oracle BI. Two core days withvarious presentations. Various in subject; Oracle BI, agile, Fusion Apps, Endeca, etc., etc. But alsovarious in style; Keynotes, one hour presentations and 10-minute (TED/Ignite) presentations. Next tothat the possibility of a Masterclass by Kevin McGinley and a NDA session by Oracle.

I was one of the lucky few, who was able to join all four days. Four days, packed with information and abasis for a lot of inspiration. Where to start!?

The Rittman Mead BI Forum is a good place to network and to exchange ideas. It was good tosee a lot of known faces again. On top of that I have met some new people also.

A big thank you to Mark Rittman, Jon Mead and their crew. Also a big thanks to Oracle for join-ing and for being so open about the Oracle BI developments and their visions and roadmaps. Thanksall for joining and sharing. Thats what makes the Rittman Mead BI Forum such a great event to be at.Hope to see everyone next year.

Stay on the lookout for the pdfs which will probably placed on the Rittman Mead website. Therewill definitely be some good stuff to have a look at!!

Integrating Oracle eBS R12 and Oracle BI 11g (2012-08-16 09:22)

I have made a [1]blogpost in the past about integrating Oracle eBS R12 and Oracle BI 10g. In the courseof an upgrade of Oracle BI Applications (OBIA) to OBIA 7.9.6.3, I came to the subject of integratingOracle eBS R12 and Oracle BI 11g. Of course you should start with the [2]documentation. Next to that,Oracle provides a note on [3]Oracle Support (ID1343143.1). Alot of integration steps are equal to the10g version.

    In short:

There are two sides (Oracle eBS & Oracle BI) where you need to make some preparations.

    Oracle eBS:

You need to define the link from to Oracle eBS to Oracle BI. This functionality hasnt changed and Ihave described that process [4]here. Combined with the FND:Oracle Business Intelligence Suite EE baseURL-profile option in Oracle eBS, you now are ready to navigate from Oracle eBS to Oracle BI.

    Oracle BI:

Now the Oracle eBS side is ready, youll have to prepare Oracle BI for accepting login requests fromOracle eBS. This parts differs a little from 10g. The changes in the Repository are still the same and

consist of validation of the ICX-cookie in the Oracle eBS Connection Pool and theAuthentication viaSession variables. You can choose to either authenticate via the GROUP- system variable or directly viathe new 11g ROLES-system variable.

    After that you need to change the Oracle BI configuration;

    authenticationschemas.xml (ORACLE HOME/bifoundation/web/display)

Simulate Oracle eBS to Oracle BI login via SQL (2012-08-16 10:26)

There is an interesting (for me at least) topic on [1]OTN about integrating Oracle eBS security intoOracle BI. It is a topic about getting Oracle eBS HR-Security to work in Oracle BI. Robin Moffat has a[2]blogpostabout; Validating EBS-BIauthentication,withoutBI. He refersto an MyOracle Supportarticle ([3]758392.1), which provides some (additional) troubleshooting details.

When I want to simulate Oracle eBS to Oracle BI login via SQL, I use some SQL-statements /

    scripts, to see what happens or at least should happen. If I need to know which HR-Orgs I could expectbased on the Oracle eBS HR-Security I use the following scripts;

    Query User - Responsibility Rol

Check which responsibilities a user has within Oracle eBS.[sourcecode language=sql]select fu.user id, frv.responsibility id

, fa.application id, frv.responsibility key, frv.responsibility namefrom apps.fnd responsibility vl frv, applsys.fnd application fa, applsys.fnd request groups frg, apps.fnd user resp groups all furga, applsys.fnd user fuwhere fa.application id = frv.application idand TRUNC ( SYSDATE ) between fu.start dateand NVL ( fu.end date

    , to date ( 31-DEC-4712, DD-MON-YYYY ) )and fu.user id = furga.user idand TRUNC ( SYSDATE ) between furga.start dateand NVL ( furga.end date, to date ( 31-DEC-4712, DD-MON-YYYY ) )and furga.responsibility id = frv.responsibility idand frv.request group id = frg.request group id(+)and fu.user name like :p user nameand frv.responsibility name like :p responsibility name

    order by frv.responsibility name[/sourcecode]

    Excecute Apps Initialize

Run the Apps Initialize script to get the session in context of the user / responsibility combina-tion of your choice, based on the previous query.[sourcecode language=sql]BEGINapps.fnd global.apps initialize(user id, resposnsibility id, resposnsibility application id, security

    group id);END;[/sourcecode]

    22

  • 8/10/2019 Blog Information OBIEE & EBS Integartion

    23/35

    Validate the Context

Check the output of the previous step[sourcecode language=sql]select fnd global.resp id

, fnd global.resp appl id, fnd global.security group id, fnd global.resp name, fnd global.user id, fnd global.employee id, fnd global.user name, ( select distinct responsibility keyfrom fnd responsibilitywhere responsibility id = fnd global.resp id )responsibility keyfrom DUAL

    [/sourcecode]

    Validate HR-Security

If all the above steps have completed like expected, you are able to check the query within theOracle BI Initialization Block (IB) related to HR-Security. In my case its IB; HR Organization. ThisIB has the following query;[sourcecode language=sql]SELECTDISTINCT HR ORG

,TO CHAR(SEC DET.ORGANIZATION ID)FROM(SELECTHR ORG,ASG.ORGANIZATION IDFROMFND USER RESP GROUPS URP,FND USER USR,PER SECURITY PROFILES PSEC,PER PERSON LIST PER

    ,PER ALL ASSIGNMENTS F ASGWHEREURP.START DATE < TRUNC(SYSDATE)AND (CASE WHEN URP.END DATE IS NULL THEN TRUNC(SYSDATE) ELSE TODATE(URP.END DATE) END)>= TRUNC(SYSDATE)

    AND USR.USER NAME = VALUEOF(NQ SESSION.USER)AND USR.USER ID = URP.USER IDAND TRUNC(SYSDATE)BETWEEN URP.START DATE AND NVL(URP.END DATE, HR GENERAL.END OF TIME)AND PSEC.SECURITY PROFILE ID = FND PROFILE.VALUE SPECIFIC(PER SECURITYPROFILE ID, URP.USER ID, URP.RESPONSIBILITY ID, URP.RESPONSIBILITY APPLICA-

    TION ID)AND PER.SECURITY PROFILE ID = PSEC.SECURITY PROFILE IDAND PER.PERSON ID = ASG.PERSON ID

    23

  • 8/10/2019 Blog Information OBIEE & EBS Integartion

    24/35

    AND ASG.PERSON ID = USR.EMPLOYEE IDANDTRUNC(SYSDATE)BETWEEN ASG.EFFECTIVE START DATE AND ASG.EFFECTIVEEND DATE

    AND URP.RESPONSIBILITY ID = DECODE(FND GLOBAL.RESP ID,-1, URP.RESPONSIBILITY ID,NULL, URP.RESPONSIBILITY ID,

    FND GLOBAL.RESP ID)UNIONSELECT DISTINCT HR ORG,ORGANIZATION IDFROM PER ALL ASSIGNMENTS F ASG,FND USER USRWHERE ASG.PERSON ID = USR.EMPLOYEE IDAND USR.USER NAME = VALUEOF(NQ SESSION.USER)AND TRUNC(SYSDATE) BETWEEN ASG.EFFECTIVE START DATE AND ASG.EFFECTIVEEND DATE

    AND ASG.PRIMARY FLAG = Y

    ) SEC DET[/sourcecode]

You should replace the VALUEOF(NQ SESSION.USER) part with either the user or fnd global.username.

Now you are able to see whether the Initialization Block is working like expected and retrievesthe same values as it does in Oracle eBS. If you can conform these steps and the the Security isntworking, its probably because one of the related IBs doesnt retrieve (all) the necessary values.

This whole post assumes that the [4]integration is setup correctly.

    Good Luck.

This works like expected, but every time we do a restart of the BI service, the instanceconfig.xmlgets backed up and replaced a new instanceconfig.xml, without the Log out Link.

This problem is related to the following BUG; [2]14249563 on MyOracle Support. The good news isthat it will be fixed in 11.1.1.7. The bad news is that at present the only workaround is to manually re-setthe link.

By definition the BIAdministrator application role is granted the oracle.bi.server.manageRepositoriespermission, which is equivalent to the 10g Administrator user who also had unrestricted access. Hence, data filters wont affect users with BIAdministrator Role. (source: Oracle Support)

Navigating from Oracle BI 11g to Oracle eBS R12 (2012-10-25 12:30)

One of the interesting features ofOracle BI 11g is the [1]Action Framework. This feature makes it possibleto e.g. navigate from Oracle BI 11g to Oracle eBS R12. When you have a look at the different OracleBI(A) presentations from Oracle you will see a slide regarding Action Links Insight to Action.

    [2]

It looks like this is standard Out-of-the-Box functionality. This is partly true. You should have at

least the Oracle BI 11g & Oracle eBS R12 [3]integration in place. Next to that there is some additional

    configuration / implementation required.

    Oracle BI configuration

Enable Action Link to Oracle eBS (ActionFrameworkConfig.xml)

    Navigate to the following location

    ORACLE MIDDLEWARE HOME/user projects/domains/bifoundationdomain/config/fmwconfig/biinstances/coreapplication

    Edit the ActionFrameworkConfig.xml

    [4]

After you have modified the ActionframeworkConfig.xml file, you have to restart the Managed Server inWeblogic that is hosting your Oracle BI EE environment.

    Oracle BI Connection Pool

Edit / Add a Connection Pool entry in the Oracle BI Administration Pool. This Connection Pool will beused to connect to Oracle BI Applications

    Note

I - the Application Role must have privileges to execute direct database requests against the Ora-cle eBS Connection Pool.

II - for the Application Role (responsibility) to successfully invoke a Navigate to E-Business Suiteaction, the target Oracle eBS function must be accessible from the users current Oracle eBS Context.

    Identify Oracle eBS Form Parameter

eBS Form Parameter. This can be achieved by the following steps.

    1. Log into Oracle eBS and select the Form you want to navigate to

    2. Identify the name of the Form and the Function which calls this Form

Navigate to the Forms Personalization Screen via Help, Diagnostics, Custom Code, Personalize

    [5][6][7]

    Forms

    Function

    [8]

We will use the name of the Form to identify the possible parameters of this Form. In this case;[9] APXINWKB. The Function Code will be used later on when creating the actual Action Link.

You can download the related .fmb-file from the Oracle eBS Application Server in the following lo-cation; $AU TOP/forms/NL. The NL-part refers to the language.

When you open the .fmb-file in Oracle Forms, you should be able to locate the parameters

    [10]

    Action Link

Now everything is in place to create the actual Action Link.

    Create Action Link

Create the Action Link via New, Action, Navigate to E-Business Suite

    [11]

    Edit Action Link

Now we must edit the specific Action Link details

    This consists of;

The Function Code (AP APXINWKB SUMMARY VIEW)

The Oracle BI Connection Pool (Oracle EBS OLTP Connection Pool - Action Framework)

    Parameter(s) >INVOICE ID

With this Action Link it is possible to call this link directly end fill in the Invoice Id yourself.

Another option is to make the Action Link part of an Oracle BI Answers Request.

    Edit Oracle BI Answers Request

Select and edit a column in an Oracle BIAnswers Request. Navigate to the Interaction Tab. Here wecan add / edit an (existing) Action Link.

    [13]

I have chosen to use a Invoice Number with an Action Link which uses a hidden (Invoice Id) col-

umn to navigate to Oracle eBS. This way I do not have to show the Invoice Id in the Oracle BI AnswersRequest. Still I can use the Invoice Id as a parameter in the Oracle eBS Form.

Its a little bit of work, but still its a nice feature.

Solving ORA-01722 - Invalid Number while navigating from Oracle BI 11g to OracleeBS R12 (2012-10-29 12:25)

    [1]In a previous [2]blog post, I covered how to navigate from Oracle BI 11g to Oracle eBS R12. Whilesetting this up, I had some challenges to overcome. One of them was the following. When I clicked thecolumn with the Action Link, the following error showed up;

    [3]

The Oracle eBS Server was available, so that couldnt be the problem. Checking the logfile(s)

showed that there was a ORA-01722 error involved.

The question at this point is; Which query is throwing a Invalid Number-error. Thanks to[4]Robin I got the idea to Sql Trace the Connection Pool which is being used for the Action Link.

    [5]

Via the generated Trace Files I was able to identify the problem - query. It turned out to bethe query which constructs the Url to navigate to Oracle eBS.

A quick check in SQL*Plus gave the same error. The problem is in the Cast functions and theNLS NUMERIC CHARACTERS-settings.

    An easy;

[sourcecode language=sql]ALTER SESSION SET NLS NUMERIC CHARACTERS = ., ;[/sourcecode]

..... solved the problem in SQL*Plus.

In Oracle BI, I added the Alter Session-Statement in the Connection Pool which is being usedfor the Action Link.

This seems like a known bug so we followed the steps in Doc Id [1]1363602.1. Unfortunately thatdidnt solve the problem.

Oracle Support advised us to increase the logging for the EM as shown in Doc ID [2]1464333.1. This re-sultedin Error Loggingin one of theAdminServer-diagnosticLog Files. AFatalErroroccurredreadingthisfile: FMWhome/user projects/domains/lnbisfoundation domain/sysman/mds/partition1/ai/bi/fragm-

    ents/mdssys/cust/user/webl ogic/deployment.jspx.xml

Investigating the structure of this file turned out that for some reason this file was empty (zero bytes).Removing the file and restarting the environment did the trick for us. The file got recreated and Coreap-plication could be selected again.
