Our Vision and Mission Statement guides our pastoral planning

Established in 1922, the parish family of St. John the Baptist Church welcomes and invites all people to our community, especially those in need. Guided by the Holy Spirit we are sustained by the Sunday Eucharist, the Word of God, and the Sacraments. All are encouraged to share their time, talent and treasure as we grow in love through our Catholic faith and the life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Summary

December 9, 2019

The Worship Committee coordinates preparations for Christmas, and so much of our meeting was devoted to these details. The crèche is placed in church during Advent

as a sign of our awaiting the Nativity, and it is fully set up after Masses on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. This year the trees were brought in before the 4th Sunday in order to make the parish decorating-the-church event easier. No trees are illuminated until Christmas Eve. The two 4:00 Christmas Eve Masses are the most-attended of the year. All chairs are used and many parishioners know it is best to come early. We discouraged “saving seats” with coats in fairness to those who arrive earlier. Liz McNeill and Jim MacDougall work together on the choir and brass ensemble music concert before the 10:00 Christmas Eve Mass. There was a rehearsal on the Monday before Christmas to make sure that everyone is on the “same page.” Fr. Frank prints up a program that lists the music pieces done by both groups. Under the direction of the Pastoral Council, the Worship Committee has also been working on details for the 100th Anniversary Year for our parish. Barbara Johnston, Liz McNeill and Cheryl MacDougall are working together to create a special prayer to be used during the anniversary year. We will continue to discuss how we would like to use it during the year. The “Jubilee Year” is a time of renewal (“a year of favor from the Lord”) and the Worship Committee has finalized details for a Parish Mission during Lent of 2022. Msgr. Jim Vlaun (Catholic Faith Network) and a team of priests will be at our parish the weekend of March 12 and 13, 2022, and host an evening session the following week. The Committee is also searching for a hymn that we can use as part of our 100th year. “One spirit, One Church” is a strong possibility at this time. There will be opportunities for reconciliation and healing during the anniversary year, including a healing service and reconciliation events. Fr. Frank will lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in winter/spring 2022, “In the Footsteps of John the Baptist,” and he is working on a year-log bulletin series that will help us understand our patron saint better, presenting John the Baptist in the Scriptures, tradition, and iconography. Finally, the renewal of Church Interior will take its next step and the repair of the sanctuary floor and back wall will probably occur over the summer . The church will be able to be used for Masses and funerals. The work will not interfere with weddings that have been scheduled.

Understanding the Mass

50. Baptism of the Lord

Christmas time comes to its close when we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, an event recorded in all four Gospels. To begin his public ministry, Jesus presented himself to be baptized by John the Baptist, and God

manifested Jesus as the divine Son. Because we associate baptism with the forgiveness of sins, the idea that the

sinless Jesus would undergo baptism seems out of place. The evangelists must have thought the same; as a whole, they downplay the incident. But the baptism of Jesus had nothing to do with forgiveness; it had everything to do with manifestation. It was a new beginning because it publicly revealed Jesus’ identity, and that testimony came not from just any witness but from God.

Three incidents in the Bible are traditionally called the “epiphany” events or the “manifestations” of Jesus, newly arrived on the biblical scene: the visit of the magi, the baptism, and the miracle at the wedding in Cana. Prior to 1969 we heard all three of these Scriptures in successive weeks: Jan. 6, Jan. 13, and on the following Sunday. All three stories form a unit because they progressively reveal the identity, the authority, and the power of Jesus.

In today’s calendar the Sunday readings spread over a three-year cycle. On the Baptism of the Lord we hear a different evangelist’s account each year. Only in year C does the following Sunday feature the Gospel of the wedding at Cana to unify the three celebrations.

In the United States we celebrate Epiphany on a Sunday. But in countries where the Epiphany is a holy day of obligation, it is celebrated on Jan. 6. In the United States, the Baptism of the Lord is usually the Sunday after the Epiphany, but if Epiphany comes late, falling on Jan. 6 or 7, the Baptism of the Lord goes to the next day, Jan. 7 or 8, a Monday, in order to make room for the weeks of ordinary time.

Please consider “automated giving” as you reflect on support of our parish family! The fruitful ministries at our parish are examples of how many of you have answered, and continue to answer, that call. To ensure such work can continue requires not only gifts of time, but also of financial help. I ask you to prayerfully consider supporting our parish with electronic donations through Faith Direct. You can find paper enrollment forms in the parish office, or you can sign up online at www.faithdirect.net by using our church code, NY67.
