IntroductionMy son you have been on my mind as I read through the Bible. Ihave been inspired by your Great Grandmother Marguerite. Shewas a great woman of faith who prayed day and night for herfamily. I am here today in no small measure because of the manyprayers and petitions she, Grandpa, and Grandma made for me.And so I begin recording my prayers for you, your wives, and yourchildren as I read through God’s Word.

It is my hope that you would know, with the sureness of thousandfoot deep granite, that God is to be trusted and his Word is sure.It is my prayer that you would recognize how God has answeredyour father’s prayers for you and that you would take comfort inknowing that God listens to your prayers because of Jesus.

Son, as much as I love you, God is a far better father to you than Icould ever be. I depend on him to fill in the many potholes I createfor you. It is my sincere hope that you will trust in God’s greatlove and faithfulness even more than I do and that you would teachothers to trust him.

Since you were a baby I have blessed you and prayed for you.Often kneeling by your bed while you slept to ask God to protectyou, provide for you, and to reveal himself to you. It is my uniqueprivilege as a father to bless you and pray for you.

May The Lord bless you and keep you.

May He cause His face to shine upon you.

May He surround you with his protection.

May He bless you with wisdom; that you would makewise choices.

May you come to know him early; that your joy befound in Him.

May you live at peace.

Your greatest joy will be found in our Savior. May you be blessedto have Him as your ultimate object of affection.

Following Jesus is not an easy journey. I want you to fight the goodfight of faith knowing that God will supply everything you need.And so I bless you to fight diligently as one assured of victory.

ForewordAny father who knows the scriptures knows it’s his job to teachthem to his sons. It is written, after all, “these words that I commandyou today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently toyour children” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, ESV¹). So in black andwhite it’sclear: men should talk to their sons about God’s Word. But leave itto the wisest man I know to do the necessary previous step: talk toGod about his sons as he walks through the Word.

In Blessed to Fight Steve Moitozo brings us into the very thick ofthe battle a man has for his sons; into the prayer closet. He invitesus to look over his shoulder as he wrestles with the scripture. As hewrestles with his God. As he wrestles for his sons (and their sons!).And as He wrestles with his own shortcomings and weaknesses.

This book is one of those rare works that accomplishes multipledisciplines in equal measure. You will be convicted to pray for yoursons. You will be discipled in how to read your Bible. You will beencouraged to pray your Bible. You will be given a vision for howto establish a family legacy. You will be taught what a real man isand how to make real men. And most importably you will hear theSpirit of God calling you into the closet for fellowship.

This book is not just a book you should read. It’s a book you shouldread, and re-read. Brothers we have a weighty responsibility. Onefor which we will all answer for in this life and the next. Stevereminds us that although there is weight to the call (it is a FIGHTafter all) at the bottom of it all we are blessed!

Give him the ability to leveragehis resources and mobilize those of others for the good ofthose in need and your great name. Work in his heart sothat he will do this without worrying about repayment orhis reputation.

Deuteronomy 17:18-20⁴ - May you be a student of God’s heartso that you will know his will, what he loves, and whathe hates.Lord, bless my son with the intense desire to know you. Lethim be a student of your Word. As he seeks you, reveal yourheart to him that he would love you and not turn away fromyou all his life.

Deuteronomy 19:13⁵ - May you be zealous for your own ho-liness; seeking out the sin in your life and putting it todeath with the power of God’s Word.Lord, bless my son with a zeal for his holiness that comesfrom knowing your heart. Give him eyes to see his sin andboth the wisdom and desire to diligently fight it with thetruth of your Word.

Deuteronomy 20:3-4⁶ - May you have great courage from faithin God’s character and purpose.Lord, bless my son with deep faith in you and your purposes.Give him the courage to expand your kingdom in all thecontexts you put him.

Deuteronomy 20:10-11⁷ - May you engage human adversariesfirst with a genuine offer of peace.Lord, bless my son with a charitable spirit even in the heatof battle. Don’t let him miss an opportunity to display yourcharacter to those who desire to bring harm to him.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21⁸ - May your children be wise; listeningto their father’s instruction and mother’s teaching.Lord, bless my son with children who are inclined to listento wisdom.

Deuteronomy 22:1-4⁹ - May you be a channel of God’s kindnessto your brothers.Lord, bless those around my son by showing your kindnessthrough him.

Deuteronomy 23:5¹⁰ - May the Lord turn a deaf ear to cursesraised against you.

Deuteronomy 31:6¹² - May you remember that the Lord goeswith you and may this be the source of your strength andcourage.Lord, bless my son with the knowledge that the Creatorand Sustainer of the universe goes with him. Let this be thebedrock of his strength and courage.
