THE PROFESSION OF FAITH and THE GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

The community of believers, in keeping the 3

rd

Commandment (“Keep holy the Sabbath Day”) is present

and worshipping on Sunday. Catholic Christians are all over the world. The beauty of this is, wherever

you are on Sunday (here in the US, in Europe, the Middle East or the Asian sub-continent or the Far

East!) it is the same Profession of Faith that will be prayed with a sense of pride and unity.

There are two forms of the Creed (Profession of Faith): long and short! The short form is the Apostles’

Creed; the long form is the Nicene Creed. Why two formulations?

Subsequent to the founding of the Church by Jesus, there was a necessity to proclaim and preach about

the Man from Nazareth as the Son of God. This is the Incarnation, the Coming in the Flesh, God

becoming Man. This belief was then part of the Creed. Of course, it was the faith of the early Church that

there is One God in Three Persons. But as history unfolded itself in time, there began to arise questions

about the humanity of Christ, the divinity of Christ and thereby the doctrine of the triune God. These

were the early centuries of the Church. In the meantime, the Apostles, in their teaching and the

founding of the early Churches, were teaching the faith through the contents of the Apostles Creed

(shorter form of the Profession of Faith). It was only around the year 315+ that under the rule of the

Emperor Constantine (who in his lifetime accepted the Apostles Creed as the basis of his own baptism)

who felt the necessity to somehow settle the theological debates that were part of the Apostles Creed.

As Emperor he called the leadership of the growing Church (the Bishops) to gather at Nicea and ‘solve’

the theological questions arising from the Creed. This was in the year 325. The gathering of the Bishops

(about 318 of them) and their scholarly accomplishment of clarifying doubts and statements and

disputes resulted in an expanded Creed which has come down to us (in the twenty-first century!) as the

Nicene Creed (from the Council of Nicea, 325 AD).

The Nicene Creed is the longer form that is prayed by Catholic communities (and a few other Christian

communities) all over the world and is therefore translated in the many languages that people speak and

pray. It is prayed at the Sunday liturgies when communities gather to worship. This is formally

incorporated into the Liturgy and is indeed the faith that we profess and witness by our lives.

Following the Profession of Faith, Holy Mother the Church, conscious of the many needs of her children,

has incorporated the General Intentions (Prayers of the Faithful) into the Liturgy. Most likely this was

done from very early days and maybe not as formally as it is prayed today. The Intentions of Prayer are

for individual, community, national and global needs to which those present and worshipping respond:

“Lord, hear our prayer”.

What have we reflected on these past few weeks???

1. That Liturgy is our public worship centered on the GIFT(S) of the Last Supper, the Body and

Blood of the Lord Jesus.

2. That we enter into the ‘ambience’ of worship recognizing our human frailty and weaknesses and

seek the help and grace of the Lord as we grow in love of God and of neighbor. (ENTRANCE RITE)

3. That we LISTEN and REFLECT on God’s Holy Word in Sacred Scripture. We thereby nourish our

minds as we prepare our hearts to enter into the Sacrifice of Christ in the Mass. (THE

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD OF GOD)

4. We then profess our Creed, the foundation of our lived faith and we follow that with the

remembrance of our individual needs and those of all people around the world. (THE CREED &

GENERAL INTENTIONS)

IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WE WILL MOVE TO THE ‘TABLE OF THE LORD’

FOR THE GREAT EUCHARISTIC PRAYER WHICH INCLUDES

THE CONSECRATION OF THE BREAD & WINE.

IN FAITH, AFTER THE CONSECRATION,

THIS BECOMES THE TRUE BODY & BLOOD OF THE LORD,

FOOD FOR OUR SOULS.

INTERCESIONES GENERALES)

LA PRÓXIMA SEMANA PASAREMOS A LA «MESA DEL SEÑOR»

A LA GRAN ORACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA QUE INCLUYE

LA CONSAGRACIÓN DEL PAN Y EL VINO

EN FE, QUE DESPUÉS DE LA CONSAGRACIÓN

SE CONVIERTE EN EL VERDADERO CUERPO Y SANGRE DEL SEÑOR,

ALIMENTO PARA NUESTRAS ALMAS.
