Black History—SNAPSHOT Biography Library Lesson
Grade Level: 5 Benchmarks: finding information, using TOC and Index, using a time-‐line, reading non-‐fiction, reading informational text, black history. Materials:
• 6 computers • Library presentation cart (data-‐projector and document camera) • Copies of Black History Biographies, which include time-‐lines. • Who am I? Snapshot camera copy for each student • Time line chart for each student • Pencils • Glue sticks • Scissors
Prior to the lesson, make copies of the camera and staple onto the bottom of each time chart (see attached) Lesson:
• Librarian reinforces meaning of biography and what is an accomplishment.
• Librarian demonstrates how to use the TOC or the Index to locate time-‐line in the biographies.
• Librarian demonstrates reading the time-‐line and then completing the required time-‐line with important accomplishments.
• Students select a famous black American, and complete their time-‐line.
Upon completion, students go to computer images and locate a photo of their famous black American and cut, paste the photo under the camera. Students will try to guess who is hidden under their classmates snapshot.
