assets and proactive risk mitigation.
SII Operational Intelligence Solutions In Action Black & Veatch’s OI Solutions revealed two serious issues at a 200 MW mid-western
steam power plant. The first issue was an internal extraction line failure that admitted
steam directly into the condenser, costing $25,500 per month in lost efficiency as
well as a 4.5 MW capacity loss. The second issue was unexpected turbine deposits,
which reduced unit capacity by 17 MW; high-pressure turbine efficiency by 4.8%; and
intermediate-pressure turbine efficiency by 3.5%. Our OI Solutions saved the plant an
estimated $63,000 in monthly losses. Clients confirm that our OI solutions provide
returns in excess of 100% of their investment in months not years.
Our OI Solutions rapidly identify performance and reliability issues and facilitate their resolution before they become costly problems.
Adaptive Planning Solutions
Our energy, water, and city systems are becoming increasingly distributed,
interconnected, and complex, with numerous interdependent planning
areas: asset management, capital investments, regulatory compliance,
market dynamics, maintenance, and overall cost and performance.
Decisions about one area can affect several others. Our AP Solutions
illuminate these interdependencies by integrating assets and networks,
linking previously disparate sets of archived and real-time data. Using
ASSET360™, AP Solutions perform predictive simulations to compare
scenarios and inform complex planning, operational, and business
decisions. We provide clients with a single point-of-truth with respect to
all planning areas, simplifying multifaceted management decisions. The
result is tactical and strategic planning to help utilities and cities adapt

Rick is referring to SII’s clever design, which compressed the typically large footprint of hydrogen equipment and reduced noise emission through a unique equipment enclosure.
Smart City Solutions We Boost Infrastructure IQ
The Smart City movement is at once challenging
and fascinating. A successful Smart City
transformation requires insightful selection of
ideal smart projects and careful integration of
complex systems to avoid a disconnected set
of technology solutions. Innovation districts,
campuses, and other city systems that operate
from an integrated framework boost their
sustainability, resiliency, and citizen satisfaction,
and expand their opportunity for economic
development. A Smart City forms as the physical
infrastructure, communications networks,
and data analytics converge creating a smart
network.
This network provides richer analytics and
actionable insights, which enable a Smart City
to be truly intelligent. This means that city
managers and planners can integrate their
functions and use intelligent applications to
deliver essential services such as energy, water,
communications and transportation with greater
efficiency and reliability.
Black & Veatch is a noted Telecommunication Systems Masterplanner and integrator, which means we design and assemble secure Smart City networks, from the sensor to the cloud.
A city’s transformation may start with a
comprehensive roadmap or a single project.
By enabling a single service or application
in the context of longer-term goals, the city
establishes a common infrastructure that can
support subsequent applications. This common
framework lets a Smart City evolve over time as
budgets, planning priorities, and financial return
on investment (ROI) allow. To help cities and
businesses plan their approach, Black & Veatch
offers Smart City Roadmap Planning and our
Smart City Accelerator application, hosted on
ASSET360™. These solutions merge community
strategy and objectives with available
technologies to identify a set of ideal smart
projects that are aligned with sufficient financial

Small Footprints, Big Smart City Impact
Smart City Solutions In Action: Smart Street Furniture: SII is giving familiar street-
side assets—such as kiosks, bus shelters, and garbage
stations—a new purpose by connecting them to
public carrier or city networks to produce on-the-go
accessibility to Wi-Fi, mobile charging, and real-time city
information. Black & Veatch is providing construction
management services to a major U.S. city as they deploy
thousands of Wi-Fi kiosks, and we are involved with the
Smart + Connected Communities initiative, which will
deploy numerous kiosks along Kansas City streets.
Smart Street Lighting: SII is shining a light on the
benefits of smart streetlights. Working with our
technology partner, Petra Systems, we help cities
reduce their streetlight energy bills, slash O&M
costs, and decrease unwanted light pollution. Smart
streetlights are also a valuable distributed infrastructure
platform to support other Smart City technologies such
as renewable energy and 4G/Wi-Fi communications
networks. In Santa Ana, California, Black & Veatch
installed high-efficiency solar panels as part of a pilot
project to demonstrate the generation of clean energy
to reduce its lighting bill. The pilot incorporates Petra
Systems Smart Lighting technology, which also conveys
luminaire health status and monitors the energy and
performance of each street light. This pilot project will
demonstrate the value of Smart Street Lighting, which
could lead to installation on a grander scale throughout
the city.
EV And Hydrogen Charge Posts: SII is leading the
charge to construct the nation’s Electric and Hydrogen
Highways. Working alongside several industry
frontrunners, SII is installing charging stations that offer
more than just relief from range-anxiety. While charge
station features are still evolving, some manufacturers
offer Wi-Fi and interactive kiosks that increase citizen
engagement, while others feature solar arrays that cut
energy use. Perhaps the biggest public benefit is free
charging offered at some stations, the cost of which is
offset by sponsors at the kiosks.
Our Partnerships Ensure World-Class Innovation
As we build the infrastructure that supports Smart City growth, we also form partnerships
and develop research and case study caches to accelerate and promote sustainable cities
worldwide. We are proud to be a Smart Cities Council partner, to serve on the Board of Advisors
for Cleantech San Diego, and to engage with the 100 Resilient Cities initiative. Given the rapid
pace of technology advancement, we know that collaboration with other industry leaders is
vital to ensure our clients obtain best-fit technologies. We have valuable relationships with
Cisco, Qualcomm, and OSIsoft—among other ecosystem partners—to ensure we maintain a
cutting-edge position in the Smart City transformation.
Project Spotlight:
SII Smart Analytics Drives Smart City Initiative In San Diego Black & Veatch supports cities as they strive to improve business
efficiencies, adopt sustainable practices and support their Climate Action
Plans. The Port Authority of San Diego conducted a Smart City initiative
demonstration pilot project, which assembled top technology partners
including OSIsoft, Intel, Dell and Black & Veatch, to advance the region’s
Smart City goals. As part of this project, smart sensors installed in selected
Port buildings collect real-time data on energy consumption. ASSET360™
translates this data, and identifies and displays the Port’s energy use
patterns on a customized dashboard, which allows Port facilities staff to
spot operational anomalies. Staff can then adjust equipment settings
based on ASSET360™ information, thereby increasing energy efficiency
and reducing operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
“Achieving a smart building collaboration of this scale has been a vision of Cleantech San Diego and our members for a long time. To have technology giants such as Intel Corporation, Dell, OSIsoft, and Black & Veatch pairing their powerful data solutions with our progressive utility, SDG&E, and deploying it at such a high-profile location as the Port of San Diego is proof that our region has what it takes to continue our leadership on a global level when it comes to smart
city initiatives.”

Distributed Grid Solutions We Gird the Grid
Society is plugged-in, powered-up, wired and
charged. Electric grids are on shifting ground
caused by a perfect storm of conditions: growing
population; aging assets too often built for
vastly different purposes; extreme weather;
expanded EV charging; unpredictable renewable
energy; and lack of insight into the distribution
system. To respond to growing concerns around
grid reliability, SII infuses advanced analytics
into grid operations through Distributed Grid
Solutions. Our solutions span all electric
system planning and operation considerations,
including engineering performance analysis,
asset monitoring and diagnostics, and outage
management—the principal concern of
utilities. Outages, caused primarily by weather
and wildlife, can cause a utility’s regulated
reliability metric and customer satisfaction to
drop. While we cannot tame the environment,
we can put data to work. Using ASSET360™,
SII combs historical outage data to assess the
cause, location and impact of previous outages;
understand the current risk of outage; and define
a cost-effective, optimized plan toward system
hardening. ASSET360™ affords utilities the
ability to review their outage data to pinpoint
reliability hiccups at each customer. This scaled
vision means that SII can evaluate, isolate, and
optimize all aspects of the distribution system
for amplified efficiency, resiliency, and reliability.
We can optimize a specific circuit or target, or an entire distribution system, end-to-end. Clients often start by evaluating a small area of their system, opting for full-system analysis, rollout and optimization to achieve full value when budgets allow.
We Advance the Story of Energy Storage
Many companies relay the same energy story:
pricey demand charges are straining budgets.
SII rewrites their energy use tale to include
energy storage, which flattens the spikes in
energy demand by charging, storing, and
discharging energy from an energy storage
system when demand begins to trend upward.
We use ASSET360™ analytics to help determine
the optimal type, size, and location of energy
storage assets within the larger system context.
As a market leader in the engineering and
installation of energy storage systems, SII
leads all phases of implementation—from
site selection and preparation to permitting,
installation design, and connection. These
systems capture cheaper off-peak power from
the conventional power grid and store it for
use during peak hours when per-kilowatt rates
are higher, delivering flexibility in a fluctuating
energy market and slashing demand charges.
Battery Storage Cabinets Black & Veatch’s SII team is a market leader in engineering and installation
of energy storage systems. Our vendor-neutral approach means our clients receive best-fit technology.
We Outdo Outages with Microgrid Systems
As power outages continue to rise, communities are turning to microgrids
to fortify their power distribution systems. Microgrids work in conjunction
with and separate from the main electrical grid—island mode operation
provides reliable, stand-alone power when the main grid goes dark. This
resiliency ensures that critical facilities, such as hospitals and police
stations, remain functional during a power outage. As wind and solar
energy continue to gain traction in the energy market, SII leverages Black
& Veatch’s extensive power generation and renewable energy expertise
to integrate the array of energy sources seamlessly into microgrid and
nanogrid systems that provide our clients with clean energy options. We
are well versed in microgrid design and integration and can lead all phases
of microgrid development, from site assessment and project planning to
design, construction, performance testing, and operational optimization.
Project Spotlight:
SII Transforms The Energy Sector Alongside Tesla, Advanced Microgrid Solutions, And Coda EnergyAdvanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS) contracted with SII to install up
to 30 battery storage cabinets on behalf of Southern California Edison
(SCE) within a Class A office complex in Orange County, California. These
cabinets would enable SCE to disconnect the buildings from the grid when
energy demand spiked. Commercial property owners wanted to ensure
that multiple, large energy storage cabinets would not detract from the
aesthetic appeal of their properties. While the owners considered the
installation to be a valuable component of their energy efficiency scheme,
their worries about siting the equipment could have derailed the project.
SII created photo-simulations of the installed cabinets and proposed
landscaping to provide an after-project picture to ease the owners’
concerns. Installation is moving forward with SII and AMS working together
on site acquisition, permitting, design, and installation.
Alongside Coda Energy, SII is providing design, engineering, and
construction services for large-scale commercial, industrial and city
facilities using Tesla Energy Storage products. Black & Veatch’s SII team
has designed behind-the-meter stationary capacity at more than 20
facilities in support of Tesla’s energy storage initiative. Energy storage
services expand the range of services Black & Veatch provides to Tesla.
“Tesla energy storage can improve and balance grid operations by providing energy to manage changes in demand. It also allows for higher levels of renewable energy integration. Black & Veatch is proud to be key supplier of engineering and construction services for Tesla as they work to transform the energy sector.”
– MARTIN TRAVERS, PRESIDENT OF BLACK & VEATCH’S
TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUSINESS
Photo Simulation SII goes the extra mile for clients. Worries over
aesthetics could have derailed the AMS project, but SII generated
photo-simulations to show the merit of visual screens. Our efforts
mitigated concerns and kept the project running smoothly.
Alongside Coda Energy, SII is providing design, engineering, and
construction services for large-scale commercial, industrial, and city
facilities using Tesla Energy Storage products.

Black & Veatch Constructs Microgrid Living Laboratory To Understand System Integration and Economics With a focus on energy sustainability, Black
& Veatch constructed their own microgrid
system in the Innovation Pavilion at our World
Headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas. Black &
Veatch’s microgrid features three rooftop solar
photovoltaic (PV) panel groups that provide 50
kilowatts (kW) of electricity. The system also
includes two natural gas-fired microturbines
that provide 130 kW of onsite power generation,
a 100 kW lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage
System (BESS) and a geothermal field with 15
wells 500 feet deep. Commissioned in 2015,
Black & Veatch’s microgrid is a living laboratory
of integrated technologies, which allows Black
& Veatch to observe the performance of these
energy resources. For example, Black & Veatch
can evaluate how each type of solar panel
performs in varied conditions, which provides
our engineers and interested clients with real
operational data, not just theory. Owning the
microgrid means that Black & Veatch can closely
study the entire life-cycle of the project and
better understand the system economics, which
provides important insight for our clients.
As added benefits, the microgrid provides
enough clean energy to run the entire Innovation
Pavilion, reducing energy costs. In the winter, the
system recovers heat from the microturbines
for supplemental heating in the main building.
The geothermal system cools and heats the
Innovation Pavilion as needed. When cloud cover
reduces solar energy production, the power
held in the BESS provides consistent electrical
output to the Innovation Pavilion. Black & Veatch
continually monitors the microgrid through SII’s
ASSET360™, which collects data and monitors
the performance of each component and the
integrated system. ASSET360™ calculates
generated energy, energy use, and can give
insights into energy saving measures.
“OUR MICROGRID SHOWCASES THE COMPANY’S CAPABILITIES FOR OUR CLIENTS AND THE PUBLIC. IT IS AN EXAMPLE OF OUR COMMITMENT AND EXPERTISE IN PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS SOLUTIONS FOR GLOBAL RENEWABLE ENERGY AND DISTRIBUTED POWER GENERATION MARKETS.”
– DAVE KERNS, BLACK & VEATCH EXECUTIVE VICE
PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ENERGY
Black & Veatch constructed their own microgrid system in the Innovation Pavilion at our World
Headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas. The microgrid provides enough clean energy to run the
entire Innovation Pavilion, reducing energy costs.
Water Performance SolutionsWe Leverage Data to Optimize Water System Performance
Water scarcity, aging U.S. water infrastructure, and steep energy costs
are driving the water industry to examine smart water systems. Smart
water systems deliver scalable distribution that adapts to changes in
water demand, policy and regulations, technology improvements, and
environmental and economic trends. SII instills system intelligence by
connecting infrastructure assets through a network of smart meters,
sensors, edge computing, hardware, and software that provides
data visualization, real-time analytics, and M&D interfaces through
ASSET360™. We help water utilities, cities, and industrial clients
understand actual and projected water use, flow accuracy, and water
quality across their systems—from residential and commercial buildings
to pumps, water treatment plants, and combined sewer overflow systems.
SII brings data into the present moment as a situational decision-
making tool. During a storm, for example, a utility can access data on
wastewater levels and flows, decide which flows to treat or divert, and
quickly understand the outcome of the actions. Similarly, insight on water
meters and consumption allows utilities to identify and fix water losses,
reduce energy costs, and keenly manage resources to optimize ROI and
prolong equipment life. Our Water Performance Solutions puts the right
information in the hands of the right people at the right time.
SII Water Performance Solutions In Action: A water utility client with a daily average demand of over 17 MG uses our Water Loss
Application to visualize their system and gain a more accurate analysis of metered
data. ASSET360™ automatically analyzes and updates water losses in selected areas
within the distribution system. Targeted leakage detection reduces water losses in
the focus areas. A unique degradation calculation is included in ASSET360™ to allow
more accurate representation of the failure characteristics. This calculation is important
because it helps the utility decide when and whether to repair or replace its meters.
