SCHOOL HISTORY

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School grew out of an earlier Catholic School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — the all-girls’ Villa Maria Anna Academy, which was established in 1954. The Villa Maria Anna Academy was transformed into Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in 1959, when it became a coeducational institution serving the greater Winston-Salem Catholic community. The mascot of Bishop McGuinness is “The Villain” which is a tribute to The Villa Maria Anna Academy. To meet growing demand, a new school building was erected on Link Road and dedicated in memory of the Most Rev. Eugene J. McGuinness, who was consecrated Bishop of Raleigh in 1937.

In 2001, the school moved to its current 42-acre location in Kernersville to accommodate a growing enrollment and as a means to updating the facilities and adding expansive, on-site athletic fields. The move also positioned the school well to serve the rapidly growing Triad region. Following the move to Kernersville, enrollment increased significantly, drawing students from Winston-Salem, High Point, Greensboro, and surrounding communities.

THE SCHOOL

Bishop McGuinness is a highly rated diocesan, four-year coeducational Catholic high school with an excellent college preparatory curriculum. Based on its mission and values, Bishop McGuinness is the school of choice for students and families seeking an institution that maintains a strong Catholic identity and sense of faith community.
