The Wizard of Oz

WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS

The Wizard of Oz has been an amazing experience. Under the guidance of Mr Flanagan, Ms Oladele, Mrs Maxwell and Mrs Otley, the cast (ranging from 7-17 years old) have been able to deliver amazing performances on all three nights. The process has been a long one but the final production, as we can all agree, was fantastic.

From the first rehearsal, we saw the humble beginnings of beautiful teamwork and improvements in singing and acting from all age groups. Well done to the Juniors for their hard work and the soloists involved. You were incredible. In each rehearsal, we saw developments which greatly impacted the final production which helped form relationships which made our Mondays and Thursdays actually enjoyable.

Rehearsals saw the making of hilarious improvisations and the revelations of our wonderful costumes and props, made by the fantastic Mrs Restivo, which ultimately helped build the performances into what

they were as we were able to get into character fully. Saturday rehearsals proved to be the precious time we needed. The dress and tech rehearsals enlightened us as to what the difficulties we had to overcome were.

Working on the Wizard of Oz has been an amazing, unforgettable experience which I am sad to see gone from my school day. However, I would like to thank everyone who came to the performances and supported our stars throughout. Goodbye Oz and thanks for the memories.

Isabelle Queva (Year 11)

Thank you to the cast and production team

Sports Roundup

SENIOR SPORTS

It has been another busy term for Bishop Challoner sports teams as the pupils have once again represented the school with distinction.

The Year 7, 8 & 9 Netball teams have had fixtures against Sydenham High and narrowly lost out on all three occasions. The Netball teams are making steady progress though and continue to improve and put in good performances.

The Year 10 Football team have had another strong term, having reached the quarter final of the English Small School's Cup, losing narrowly to Langley School, Norwich. The Year 10 team put a fantastic performance in against Langley, a feeder school for Norwich FC, and were unlucky not to win.

The Year 7 & 8 Hockey team represented the school at The ISA Hockey Tournament at the Olympic Stadium. The boys put in a fantastic performance in what was a very strong tournament with stiff competition from other schools.

The Year 9 & 11 Football teams represented the school in the ISA Football Tournament at Nottingham University. Both the Year 9 & 11 teams came home with medals around their necks as the Year 9's were runners up in the Bowl Competition and the Year 11's runners up in the Plate Competition. After half term there are a number of tournaments for the pupils to look forward to as the Year 8 girls have the ISA Netball tournament at Lingfield College, the ISA X-Country run, Hockey fixtures for Year 7 & 8 and athletics training begins in preparation for the summer.

Year 9 Science Museum Trip

SENIOR NEWS

Last Friday, Year 9 pupils visited the Science Museum. They spent an hour in the Wonderlab, looking at hands-on experiments and demonstrations. The million volt Tesla coil was amazing. Many students preferred the friction slide though. We then had a show on the use of prime numbers. Pupils helped free Dr Bovell from a heavily encrypted seat. After lunch we visited a few galleries to collect some data about plane engines, super bugs, materials and space exploration. We finished by a visit to the unmissable museum shop. Thank you to Dr Bovell, Miss Ruston and Mrs Shields for accompanying the pupils.

Happy Valentine's Day

NURSERY NEWS

Valentine's Day is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for the people we love. It is never too early to help young children express love and friendship to the people that they care about.

In the Nursery we have been busy making Valentine's Day cards and heart butter biscuits to give to loved ones.

The children used their fine motor and literacy skills to write their names and make marks on their cards. They decorated their cards beautifully with heart shaped doilies and sequins, as well as butterfly stickers. In the kitchen, the children used their

mathematical skills to weigh the three ingredients for the tasty heart butter biscuits.

The children were encouraged to give their Valentine's Day card and biscuit to someone that they love. They said that they loved their Mummies, Daddies, friends and Jesus.

Fascinating Maths: UKMT SENIOR NEWS

Last week, we featured some of the questions from the UKMT Intermediate Mathematics Challenge, which some of our Year 9, 10 and 11 students sat. Here are the answers to the questions that featured in the update last week.

1. D

25% of the total UK population of red squirrels is represented by 40 000, which is the number of red squirrels living in the rest of the UK.

Therefore, the required difference is 120 000 – 40 000 = 80 000

2. B

In order from 00:00, the times when the required digits appear in any order on the 24 hour clock are 01:29, 02:19, 09:12, 09:21, 10:29, 12:09, 19:02, 19:20, 20:19 and 21:09. Therefore, there are ten such times.

3. B

For a cube of a positive number to end in a five, the integer itself must end in a 5. The first two cubes with this property are 53 = 125 and 153 = 3 375. However, 253 > 203 and 203 = 8 000, therefore 253 > 5 000. Hence, there are only two positive cubes less than 5 000.

4. E

The triangular numbers less than 20 are 1, 3, 6, 10, 15. As we are looking for a sequence of consecutive integers such that we have prime, even and triangular, the required triangular number has to be odd. Therefore, we have to have either 3 or 15. We cannot pick 3 as 1 is not prime, hence we have to pick 15. So the required product is 13 x 14 x 15 = 2 730.

5. B

We are told that the weight of 25 000 Empire State Buildings is equal to the weight of one billion elephants. Hence, the Empire State Building weighs the same as 40000 elephants.

6. A

From the information provided, the sum of Megan’s first three numbers is -9, the sum of her first four numbers is 16, and the sum of her first five numbers is -25.

Therefore, the fourth number is 16 – (– 9) = 25, and the fifth number is – 25 – 16 = –41. The difference between them is 25–(–41) = 66.

Debate Chamber

SIXTH FORM NEWS

This Economics Summer School is a great opportunity for Year 12 students interested in economics or business to study a range of economics which is wider than that available at school and in a style which encourages active and critical engagement.

This is a remarkable time for the study of global economics, as we see at least a partial reversal of long-term trends of globalisation and free trade, and a reassertion of ideological battles over taxation and public spending. In the UK, the economic implications of various Brexit options are hotly contested, but often very poorly understood. Economic public policy debates are profoundly impactful on all our lives, and this course offers a window onto a complex and fascinating world.

The five days will cover some key economic theories in micro-, macro- and international economics, seminars

and debates about the economic, political and moral implications of economic policies and behaviour, as well as opportunities to discuss and analyse current affairs in economics, such as Brexit, the impact of America’s new protectionism, and the evolving role of China in the international financial system.

Our Lady of Lourdes

CHAPLAINCY

On Monday 11th February we celebrated World Day of the Sick in conjunction with the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. At our assembly this morning we thought about Lourdes and the importance of praying for those who are sick.

Lourdes became famous in 1858 after a young peasant girl called Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Initially no one believed Bernadette until she told the Bishop that the ‘Lady’ had called herself the Immaculate Conception. This was always something that the Church had believed but it was only officially stated in 1850. This was not common knowledge and Bernadette could not have known this.

The title Immaculate Conception was given to Mary because God preserved her from original sin from the moment of her conception. He did this because he knew

that one day she would become the Mother of Jesus. At our Baptism God removes original sin from us too.

Soon after the apparitions began a miraculous spring began to flow at the site of the apparitions. Many people began to visit the shrine and to bathe in the waters. Today about six million people go on pilgrimage to Lourdes each year and there have been approximately 7,000 claims of spiritual, psychological and physical healings since then, 70 of which have been medically verified as true miracles. This means that there is no ordinary or scientific explanation for them.

Mr Lohan – School Chaplain

Let us PrayCHAPLAINCY

During our assembly we prayed for those who are sick asking Mary under the title of Our Lady of Lourdes to pray for them. I invite you to pray for someone who is sick today asking Our Lady to intercede for them. Let us also pray that God will bless and protect us during the half term break. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Polite Suggestion Vehicle Idling Information. Miss Ruston attended an ‘idling action’ event this week. Lots of interesting facts were highlighted about air pollution and health which are great reasons to try and switch our engines off when we are stationary and when near schools.

Nitrogen dioxide and particle matter are produced by petrol and diesel vehicles which has detrimental effects on our health when inhaled. It does not use more fuel to switch your engine on and off if you are stationary for a minute or longer. Please help the environment and our health by switching off car engines when stationary in our vehicles. Thank you.
