National Multiple Sclerosis Educationand Awareness Month
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder thataffects the central nervous system, (CNS) is comprised of thebrain & spinal cord. In the CNS, nerve fibers are surroundedby layers of insulation called myelin which allows nerve signalsto travel properly. In MS, the myelin is destroyed on the brain &spinal cord. The scarring, from this disrupts transmission ofmessages that communicate an action from the brain, through thespinal cord, to various parts of the body. MS was first described by French neurologist Jean-MartinCharcot in 1868 and after more than 140 years of research much

remains a mystery. There is no known cause and no cure, yet. However, there are treatments that can slow the progress of thedisease and manage the symptoms 200 people are diagnosed with MS every week & over 2.5 millionare living with the disease worldwide. Because the Centers forDisease Control & Prevention don't require physicians to reportnew cases of MS & symptoms of the disease MS can gounrecognized for some time. MS is more common in women, itappears more frequently in Caucasians than in Hispanics orAfrican Americans, and is rare among Asians & certain otherethnic groups. MS is most commonly diagnosed in those betweenthe ages of 20-50 although it can develop in young children &teens as well as older adults. The necessity for early treatment of MS is becoming increasinglyclear. Studies indicate that early treatment delays disability, presumably by decreasing the injury to the nervous system causedby the disease. This treatment falls into 2 categories: treatmentsthat address symptom management and treatments that change thecourse of the disease by modifying the number & severity ofattacks & the progression of disability. There has been asignificant progress in both types of treatments in the last decade.Six different products have been approved by the FDA as diseasemodifying treatments for MS since 1993. PRUDENCE WILLIAMSExchange Club Family
Center
You are invited to join us as ourho s t Amanda Rolfe and fellowExchangites welcome PrudenceWilliams. The Exchange Club FamilyCenter, a child abuse preventioncenter, opened in 1992. Its
mission is to help parents learn to provide safe, healthy &nurturing home environments in which their children may thrive. They focus our efforts on prevention & treatment through ParentAide, a voluntary in-home program. In 1979, the National Exchange Club adopted Parent Aide as itsnational project. Parent Aide is a highly effective method ofaddressing the problems faced by families in abusive orpotentially abusive situations. This model is based on research &concepts first introduced by Drs. Ray Heifer & Henry Kempe.Their leading research on battered child syndrome expressed thebelief that most parents who abuse grew up the same way -without positive role models for good parenting. These parentsoften had difficulty developing healthy, trusting relationships. The Parent Aide family facilitator's role is to act as a mentor, byassisting parents with intensive support & information. Modelingeffective parenting, they works with parents in their home. Being athome provides a more comfortable atmosphere & allows theparent to more readily develop a trusting, dependable relationship.

This relationship with the parent provides a model for the parentfor developing a trusting relationship with their child. In addition, they assists with problem solving skills & strengthening theparent's network of social supports.
The keys to this successful program are continuity & consistencyof service, due to intensive and long term home visitation. Ideally, home visits occur one to two times per week and continue for atleast one year. Please joing us Thursday, March 7th as we welcome PrudenceWilliams.
