Birmingham Branch 80 th Anniversary Timeline CIPS began as The Purchasing Officers Associaon founded by 16 businessmen in 1932 . . . Building the Future Respecng the Past . . . Birmingham branch remain enormously proud of its heritage of purchasing experse, its commitment to business in Birmingham and the greater midlands and the further development of its members. In April 1932 J McDowell Chief Purchasing Agent for Dunlop Rubber Company and W Pickard Chief of Purchasing for Cadbury Brothers set up the Birmingham and District Branch. In the midst of the great depression it was hard to gain support but the Birmingham branch held its first meeng on 25th April 1932. The branch was allocated £20 budget. The membership fee was a huge £3 3s. Early visits included one to Fort Dunlop on 19th June 1933. The 30s Birmingham branch worked hard to achieve recognion at The Brish Industries Fair – an important exhibion centre in Birmingham. For two weeks every year it was the most visited aracon in the country with visits from the king and queen. The success of the branch meant that members were able to help set up neighbouring branches such as Coventry. The 50s The social side of the branch connued with wine tasng evenings, canal boat cruises, race days at Straord and Wolverhampton and beer and skiles nights. In 1978 the branch featured in the Birmingham Post with interviews with the commiee past and present and local companies. The 70s The Instute was granted its Charter status and became CIPS Branch visits included works tours of Jaguar Land Rover and Toyota, a well aended visit to Cape Hill Brewery in 1991 and a combined AGM and ride and drive evening at Peugeot Coventry in 1993 The membership base began to move away from tradional manufacturing towards service orientated organisaons. The pressures of work and family life saw a decline in numbers. The 90s The branch has been able to aract high quality speakers on topics such as The Euro, E-aucons and an Olympics Special. It is ambious in its commitment to serve its members in the greater midlands through new means of communicaon and partnerships. The 2000s The 80s saw the first female chair elected Meengs were held at the Brish Gas Social Club Erdington and members brought partners or guests to branch events. The 80s With an expanding membership a full branch programme was developed with monthly meengs. Regular venues included The Grand Hotel Colmore Row and The Chamber of Commerce. The social events with up to 400 members and guests in aendance were lively events. The Purchasing Officers Associaon merged with The Instute of Public Supplies to form the IPS. The 60s The Birmingham branch carried on meeng through the war taking its responsibilies seriously by lobbying the Ministry of Supply on purchasing maers and entertaining American military officers associated with NAPA. It also worked on design standards with BSI a part of the war effort. Post war, TF Turner and FJ White spearheaded expansion of the branch by launching ‘The Weekly Bullen’ of business news.
