Evolution

S7L5. Students will examine the evolution of living organisms through inherited characteristics that promote survival of organisms and the survival of successive generations of their offspring.

a. Explain that physical characteristics of organisms have changed over successive generations (e.g. Darwin’s finches and peppered moths of Manchester).

Bird Adaptation Artistry

* How are birds physically adapted to their environment? They have different structures that help them survive. Some birds have differently shaped beaks to eat specific types of foods, while others have longer legs to stand in deep water while feeding. There are many different types of adaptations, like size, wing span, foot type, and feather shape. In this activity, you will create a model of a bird that is physically adapted to live in a specific habitat.

Page 6: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Let’s Discuss…• How does this activity demonstrate the

importance of adaptations?• Why did your birds have such different

habitats and characteristics?• Name 2 adaptations and explain how

they promote survival for your bird.

Choose one of the habitats below: (Enchantedlearning.com)

• Dry, sandy desert; very little water or plant life• Cold, mountainous area; very high elevation• Antarctic region; snow and ice cover the

ground all year• Tropical rain forest; full of colorful plant life

**Create a bird that is physically adapted to survive in your chosen habitat!! Be creative!

• BEAKS:–1- pouch-like (pelican)–2- long, thin (crane)–3- pointed (like a woodpecker)–4- curved (hawk)–5- short and stout (like a finch)–6- long and slender (hummingbird)

• FEET–1- Webbed (duck)–2- long toes (crane)–3- clawed (hawk/eagle)–4- grasping (chicken)

WINGS1- large (like an eagle)2- medium3- small

• LEGS-– 1- flexor tendons (chicken)– 2- long, powerful (ostrich)– 3- long, slender (crane)– 4- powerful muscles (hawk, eagle)

• Coloration:–1- bright plumage (males)–2- dull (female)–3- changes plumage with seasons

Explicit Vocabulary p. 3 Adaptations

What is an Adaptation? An adaptation is a trait that helps an organism adjust to its environment, survive and reproduce.

Page 12: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Natural SelectionNatural Selection

What is Natural Selection? Natural selection is the process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species.

Survival of the fittest! Who's Going to Survive?

Page 13: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Overproduction

Most species produce far more offspring than can possibly survive.

Page 14: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Competition

Competition is the struggle between organisms for the limited resources in a habitat.

Page 15: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Variation

Variation is any difference between individuals of the same species.

Natural Selection: Examples

Are these two butterflies the same species? These are the Monarch and Viceroy butterflies.

The Monarch on the left is poisonous and the Viceroy is not.

Question: Why would it be beneficial for the Viceroy to look like the Monarch?

Natural Selection: Examples

Checkpoint: How are these organisms adapted to live in a cold climate? A species of hare (rabbit) that is found in a cold tundra environment. How are oversized feet an advantage to the Arctic Hare?

Page 19: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Natural Selection: Examples

How many moths do you see?How many moths do you see?

Earlier ideas on Evolution• LaMarck– evolution by acquired traits

• creatures developed traits during their lifetime

• give those traits to their offspring

– example• in reaching higher

leaves giraffes stretch their necks & give the acquired longer neck to offspring

– not accepted as valid

Page 21: Bird adaptation artistry evolution

Darwin’s view of Evolution• Darwin– giraffes that already

have long necks survive better

– leave more offspring who inherit their long necks• variation• selection & survival• reproduction &

inheritance of more fit traits
