Dues and other funds raised by the Social Club go to-wards supporting all the youth activities in the Village, Welcome Baskets for new BBV owners, gifts for the residents of Stafholt, the Blaine Food Bank, items for the Clubhouse and much, much more.

“HATS OFF” Spring Luncheon: The annual Spring Pot-Luck Salad Luncheon was great fun. The delicious salads, rolls and desserts were enjoyed by all. Jenny Taylor demonstrated hat making then raffled off the fantastic hats. Thanks to all who helped organ-

ize, decorate and attended the luncheon. FUN RUN/WALK: Thirty some applicants took part in the 7th annual Fun Run/Walk on May 16th, from wheel chair, to bikes, to walkers and runners and two 10K runners. It was a beautiful day to get out and en-joy our Village. Don Clark and Pat Barr did a great job, as always, with organizing the event. Thanks to all who participated and helped. The T-shirts are still on sale: Adults - $12.00 and Youth sizes - $10.00. If you didn’t get a shirt this year, please contact Sandra Bogan at 371-7350. Bunco: The next Bunco night will be held Friday, July 11th, at 7:30 pm. Call Judie Wiechmann at 371-9906 to make your reservation. Bring an appetizer or a dessert to share. Coffee and tea will be served or BYOB. The cost is $5.00 a person, and all the money collected will

be given out as prizes. Welcome Committee: If you are new to the Village and haven’t been greeted by the Committee, please call Judy Lackey at 371-3387 or the Office. Donations of baskets and new items to be used in the Welcome Bas-kets, such as individually wrapped teas, coffees, pot-pourri, wrapped candy, candles, small notebooks, pens/pencils, etc. are always needed and appreciated.

If you are a Village resident and have a free service or gift certificate that you would like to donate to the Welcome Baskets, please contact Judy. No business cards please. Helping Hands: The Helping Hands coordinator is Sandi Schoenherr. We have a terrific pool of volun-teers who are available to provide temporary assistance to those in the village who are sick, recovering from surgery, have lost a loved one or otherwise need help. Services include providing food or meals, running er-rands, picking up medicine, helping with children, making emergency repairs, temporary yard work, driv-ing people to doctor appointments, etc. We have created a list of medical equipment that will be available for short-term use, such as walkers, wheel chairs, crutches, canes, an adult portable potty-chair, etc. We also have baby items for temporary use, such as cribs, strollers, car seats, etc. If you have a loved one or know of someone who needs a “helping hand” temporarily, please contact Sandi at 393-4601.

Commemorative Bricks: The four new plaques have arrived and have been installed. Spaces are still available, but are very limited. If you would like to add your name, or the name of a loved one, to this memory sidewalk, please contact Sandra Bogen at 371-7350. Forms are also available at the BBV Office.

Food Bank: There are still people in our Birch Bay and Blaine communities who need assistance. If you are interested in donating non-perishable items to the Blaine Food Bank, you may leave your donations in the special box in the library. Check the monthly Bulle-tin calendar for times the clubhouse will be open.

"Friendship Tea". WOW!! The Friend-ship Tea is proud to say the Home and Garden Tour was a success! The gals that sold tickets did a fabulous job, people helped with phone calls, printing and every other job imaginable to make the

whole day a lot of fun for everyone. The homeowners were such a joy to work with and their hospitality was amazing. Thank you so much to everyone that made the day spectacular! The annual Sucia State Park Cleanup Cruise was a huge success this year, as we had fourteen boats with twenty-six workers there, busily cleaning up beaches, weed-whacking, cleaning up campsites, and doing anything and everything Ranger Ted needed in order to prepare the island and its facilities for the summer cruising sea-son.

I would like to personally thank everyone who came out for that event, as Sucia Island is one of our most treas-ured cruising destinations and it really feels good to know that we did such a good job this year that Ranger Ted cancelled all the other clubs who were scheduled to come out for cleanup duties because there was nothing left for them to do. Great job, everyone!

On May 2nd, the Opening Day ceremonies and events took place, with the annual Blessing of the Fleet and Memorial prayers delivered by Reverend Peter Mans. In addition to the traditional sail-past of the Commo-dore's vessel, two other boating activities were sched-uled, a Predicted Log Event for the power boaters and a "Round-the-Cans" race for the sailboats.

Four vessels participated in the Predicted Log Event, which was organized and directed by Gene Carr. This event was a lot of fun, and Gene did a great job of put-ting it together. At the awards ceremony that took place after dinner at the clubhouse, Gene said that they were all winners, and prizes were given out accordingly. You'll have to ask Gene for further details......

Three sailboats started the Round-the-Cans race, and two finished. There was wind for the entire race, but around Mark 3, near Point Whitehorn, there was a little more than was bargained for. First Place in the race, as well as First-To-Finish, went to "Benz", skippered by Jerry Stege. In Second Place, and not far behind on corrected time, was "Sharod", skippered by Rod McLeod. We hope to hold more of these events as the season progresses.

Of special interest, and a complete surprise arranged by Anne Brown, the music was provided by Vanessa, Tom, and Michael of the "Dock Rockers". They had every-one tapping their feet and clapping hands, and were the highlight of the clubhouse event.

BBV Golf Fund Raiser Coming July 18th & 19th – Mark your calendars for the 2009 Golf Fund Raiser Tournament and Dinner Auction on July 18 and 19. Planning is now underway for this much looked for-ward to annual event. Open to all BBV residents and their guests, the Fund Raiser consists of a tournament (golf one or both days), fun golf games on the side, great auction and raffle items and a BYO-meat BBQ, making it a fun time for all. The money raised supports the Junior Golf Program and funds golf course im-provements and other expenses. For further details, see the new outdoor bulletin board located at the Golf Shop—funded in part by Fund Raiser money—and watch for more information in the July Bulletin. Auc-tion and raffle items are now being solicited, along with Hole Sponsors. Contact Jim Macmillan (371-2933) for further details and to volunteer your services to support this great event.

2nd Annual "Tee-It-Up Duf-fers Scramble" was a blast! – The weather was great and 40 golfers came out and played in this fun, no-pressure 9-hole golf “tournament” on May 3rd. Twenty (20) 2-person teams, in-cluding eight non-Golf Club

members, scrambled for a best-ball score. Youth pre-vailed when team Jordan Heaverlo & Ryan Wallen fin-ished with a best-ball score of 25, beating the 9-hole course par of 31 by six strokes! Another youth, Ian Knowles, teamed with Sandy Hilborn to finish 2nd with a score of 30. Chuck Moore & Harry Shearer took 3rd place with a score of 31. As for the rest of us well, we had a blast, too! Bob Simp-son coordinated the Duffers Scramble event. Golf Course Open House– Rounding out “Opening Weekend” events, the 3rd Annual BBV Golf Course Open House took place on May 3rd. Thirteen (13) BBV residents dropped by to enjoy the food and guided tours of the course provided by Golf Commit-tee members. Open House guests went away with a new appreciation of this valuable BBV asset and, hope-fully, they will return to play the course some day. Thanks go to Ron Bogen, Joan Lockwood, and Rex Willis for providing tours of the course on their golf carts. Jim Macmillan secured the refreshments and co-ordinated the Open House event. 2009 BBV Junior Golf Program – The 2009 BBV Junior Golf program will begin on June 12th. The 5-week program includes lessons, equipment for youth who do not have their own golf clubs and will accom-modate beginner and experienced golfers. Boys and girls of BBV between the ages of 11 through 17 are eligible. Parents and guardians of participating youths do not need to be BBV Golf Club Members. Youths 18 & under are eligible for a separate “youth” BBV Golf Club membership for only $50 through the BBV office. Contact Chuck Pagani (371-7405) or the Golf Shop (371-2026) after June 1 for specifics on the start date, days and times of the 2009 Junior Golf Program.

Course Improvements – Mother Na-ture is finally beginning to cooperate. With warmer, dryer weather, the fairways are firming up, the grass is growing and the greens are filling in. Our dedicated golf course staff is working hard to get

and keep the course in shape for play and their efforts show. The irrigation system is working well, with new lines installed in select locations. New sand traps, part of the overall drainage plan for the course, are begin-ning to round into shape and will soon be testing our golfing skills. Enjoy! Important Course Play Reminders – Everyone must sign-in before starting to play. Non-Golf Club Mem-bers and all guests must pay green fees. When condi-tions are wet and signs are posted, motorized carts must be kept on paved and graveled paths. At all times,

June is the first month of summer and with summer I think of sipping cool white wine on a lovely evening watch-ing the sun set over the bay. What bet-ter wine could there be than something from France? I know that is a contro-

versial statement but there are many great white wines of France. In addition to the most highly regarded chardonnays in the world of Burgundy (including Cha-blis, which is NOT to be confused with the California jug wine imposters that incorrectly use that name!), there are many great white wines in France made from Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier and others. For our June 19th tasting we will be focused on the lesser known white wines of France. The cost will be the usual $20 per taster and a food item to share. This might be a good time to try out some of those summer appetizers that go so well with white wine. Our starting time will be 7:30 pm to allow time for our golfing members to have time after Friday Night Couples Golf. If you are interested in attending, please call Jim Macmillan at 371-2933 or email him at [email protected] or [email protected] by June 15th. You should bring 6 glasses for the tasting and an appetizer or dessert to share with the group. If you missed the May 15th tasting of South African wines here is a list of the group rankings. 1-2006 De Toren, FusionV,Blend $34.60 2-2007 Boekenhoutskloof, The Chocolate Block $30.75 3-2004 Warwick, Three Cape Ladies, Blend $14.00 4-2007 Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Pinot Noir $30.79 5-2005 Rustenberg, John Merriman, Blend $19.25 6-2007 Spice Route, Pinotage $15.40

The expensive wines did pretty well this month.

I am learning about Facebook and have established Birch Bay Village Wine Club Group where we can list events, have wine discussions, and leave pictures. If you would like to be part of this group please let me know. So far there has not been much interest with only 9 people joining. Laurie has put some photos of the Hobo dinner which are great. Visit our web site http://macmillan.jamesg.googlepages.com/home for more information on our tasting schedule & wines we have tasted in the past.

One of the main topics at the upcom-ing Security Committee meeting, at 7:00 pm on June 10th, will be the role of the BBV Security Committee, and the development of a Mission State-

ment for the committee. If you have thoughts on this subject, please plan to attend. Input from residents is always sought after and welcome.

A Mission Statement draft has been prepared by the committee chair, and will be read, discussed, and amended at this meeting as appropriate.

As always, the Security Committee welcomes, and will act on, any safety or security concerns noted by resi-dents. Please do bring any issues to our attention. Warmer weather is here and more boating activities are taking place, so those of us who go in and out of the marina in our vessels need to be watchful for kay-akers and other small boat operators who might stray into our path, in addition to the usual hazards such as dead-heads and logs. Many more walkers and bicy-clists are out on our streets as well.

Stay alert and stay safe.

Wayne McFee, Security Committee Chair

As of May 21st, no reported criminal incidents in the Village since April 20th. Remember to notify Security & your Blockwatch Rep before you leave on summer vacations. Leave some lights on inside the house, on timers, to give it a 'lived in' appearance. Do not hesi-tate to contact Security concerning any suspicious ac-tivity.

BBV Music Night Music Nights are held at the Clubhouse on Mondays at 7 p.m. each month. We decided to discon-tinue the first Monday for the sum-mer, but the other Mondays are still on: the second (and fifth) is Jammin'

for Fun, and the fourth is a Musician's Night. (Pizza Etc. is held on the third Monday of the month). See http://gorts.com/songbook for more information. New singers, players and listeners are invited to join.

Thanks to all those who helped get the Village off to a good start to the summer with all the Opening Day festivities. The Opening of Yachting season was well attended as was the Opening Day Duffers Scramble and the Golf Course Open House. Next year, weather permitting, I would like to add more activities for this “Opening Weekend”.

I have a request for those who attend functions at the Clubhouse. Please avoid driving on the commemora-tive bricks with cars, trucks, golf carts, etc. Some of the bricks have been coming loose and breaking. Thanks!

With June comes the Annual Meeting. Although there is no voting for replacement of Board members, please plan on attending anyway to visit with fellow members and listen to the speakers. Coffee and cookies will be served prior and after the meeting. See you there.

June also ends the school year until fall. Please be dili-gent in watching your speed as you drive around your Village this summer. Children will have more time to enjoy the amenities once school is out, so be extra cau-tious as you drive around your Village.

A special thanks to Irene Flukey and Dick Green for donating the bench at Marina View Park and to Mick Bride and Jim Lockie and anyone else I may be forget-ting, for retrieving and putting it in place. Enjoy a nice view (and maybe a lunch) overlooking the Marina from the tables and the bench at the park.

A reminder that there is boat and/or trailer parking available at the Marina/office parking lot. The whole area is in for a make-over this summer and more park-ing should be available. The cost is $50/year (plus ma-rina usage of $60) so it comes out to less than $10 a month; it would also give you more space on your driveway. Security cameras are already in place with more to come around the storage area. The Security Guards have access to these cameras and will be moni-toring them. Electricity and surveillance signs are the next items to be installed in that area.

The Board has approved a new $5 Weekly Family Pool Pass for those who wish to enjoy the pool for a short period of time during the summer (grandkids here for a week, etc). The pass will be dated with the purchase date (or date requested) and run seven (7) consecutive days (Rain or Shine).

From the BBV Manager The Board has also modified the new parking rules that will go into effect after the June meeting. After a lot of debate and input from membership, the five (5) foot buffer from the roads edge has been modified to three (3) feet. Also, the four (4) vehicle limit outside the garage ruling has been modified to four vehicles from the house edge to the street. Therefore, if you have vehicles parked in a designated graveled or con-crete parking area next to your house or garage, those do not qualify as the four vehicles outside the garage. For more information on these rules, call or stop by the office and talk with Skip or myself for clarification.

I am still receiving complaints about dog owners not picking up after their pets. This refers to all areas of the Village; roadways, parks, vacant lots, along the beach above the high water line, etc. Please be courte-ous and pick up after your pets. Smokers, please pick up your extinguished butts as well. I have been getting inquiries as to how to solve this problem as well. The same areas mentioned above about pets (plus the golf course) have been cited as areas of concern. Thank you for helping keep your Village neat and clean. Everyone benefits from people cleaning up after themselves and their pets.

Enjoy the summer and the warm weather.
