EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION

Vandana Shiva was born on November 5, 1952 inDehradun, India.B.Sc. in PhysicsM.A. in the Philosophy of Science . Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario .She later went on to interdisciplinary research in science,

technology and environmental policy , at the IndianInstitute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore .

MOTIVATING FACTORS

Vandana shiva is mostly inspired by her parents. She learned everything from them , both ecologicalawareness and a sense of responsibility towards society.

She says,My mother always worekhadi

. When wewanted nylon she said: "I'll buy you nylon. But youknow, if you buy nylon, some industrialist will getanother Mercedes, and if you buy khadi , somewoman's chulha will get lit. You decide." That was aprofound lesson in simple living.

My parents also taught us fearlessness, Acting by yourconscience, doing the right thing without being afraid of people around you.

FIRST MOVEMENT

Chipko movement :She started her work onbiodiversity with the Chipko

Movement in the 1970s of women hugging the trees toprevent their felling.

Trees were our livelihood, asalso natural water dams,sources of fodder, fuel andfertilizer. Chipko taught me thatthose of us who have PhDsdon't necessarily knoweverything! There is so muchknowledge in our communities,and with our grandmothers.

OBJECTIVES OF NAVDANYA

To establish an agriculture at peace with nature- that leaves farmers in peace , doesn't push

them into the kind of violence.Second is the celebration of diversity. Biodiversesystems produce more nutrition per acre thanthe most intensive industrial systems and alsohave a higher land-equivalent ratio.

In her own words Dr. VandanaShiva: Navdanya is a nationalprogram to basically fight the seedmonopolies. I started Navdanyaas a political act so that farmerswould have free seed in theirhands, using that free seed theywould be able to resist the kind of control system that the newcorporations, corporate control,was trying to establish in India. It is a network of seed keepersand organic producers spreadacross 16 states in India.

It was founded as a globalcampaign of women on biodiversity, cultural diversityand food security. Organic agriculture is not just a source of safer,healthier, tastier food. It is an answer to rural poverty. Itis saving the Earth and farmers' lives.
