BIDEN CALLS POTUS UNFITSlams Trump for mocking US war dead

AGENCIESWashington

Democratic presidential nomi-nee Joe Biden declared Presi-dent Donald Trump "unfit" forthe presidency on Friday, deliv-ering an impassioned reactionto a report that Trump - whonever served in uniform - al-legedly mocked American war dead.

The president and his allieshave dismissed the report in TheAtlantic as false.

The allegations, sourced anony-mously, describe multiple offen-sive comments by the presidenttoward fallen and captured USservice members, including call-ing World War I dead at an Amer-ican military cemetery in France"losers" and "suckers" in 2018.

The reported comments, manyof which were confirmed inde-pendently by The AssociatedPress, are shining a fresh lighton Trump's previous public dis-paragement of American troopsand military families. Thatopens a new political vulnerabil-ity for the president less thantwo months from Election Day.

Voice cracking, Biden told re-porters that "you know in yourgut" Trump's comments, if true, are "deplorable." "I've just never

been as disappointed, in mywhole career, with a leader thatI've worked with, president orotherwise," Biden added.

"If the article is true - and it ap-pears to be, based on otherthings he's said - it is absolutelydamning. It is a disgrace." Headded that "the president shouldhumbly apologise to every GoldStar mother and father, to everyBlue Star family that he's deni-grated. ... Who the heck does hethink he is?" Trump, in the OvalOffice, said no apology was nec-essary, because it was a "fake sto-ry." Trump was alleged to havemade the comments in Novem-

ber 2018, as he was set to visit theAisne-Marne American Ceme-tery during a trip to France. TheWhite House said the visit wasscrubbed because foggy weathermade the helicopter trip fromParis too risky and a 90-minutedrive was deemed infeasible.

Speaking Friday in the OvalOffice, Trump denied ever utter-ing such comments: "It was a ter-rible thing that somebody couldsay the kind of things - and es-pecially to me 'cause I've donemore for the military than al-most anyone anybody else." Lat-er, in a press briefing, Trumpsuggested the source of the sto-ry was his former chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly."It could have been a guy likeJohn Kelly," Trump told re-porters, saying his former topaide "was unable to handle thepressure of this job." Biden's cri-tique was personal.

Returning to Washingtonfrom a Thursday visit to Penn-sylvania, Trump told reportersthat the Atlantic report was "adisgraceful situation" by a "ter-rible magazine." "I would bewilling to swear on anythingthat I never said that about ourfallen heroes," Trump told thereporters, gathered on the tar-mac in the dark.

Tapes reveal Nixon’s hatred for IndiansYOSHITA SINGH / New York

Newly declassified White House tapes disclose former USpresident Richard Nixon speaking disparagingly about Indiansand reveal the bigotry he and his national security adviser HenryKissinger held that influenced US policy toward India and SouthAsia under his presidency. The declassified White House tapesreveal a "stunning" conversation between Nixon, Kissinger andthe then White House chief of staff H.R. Haldeman in the OvalOffice in June 1971 in which Nixon asserts in a "venomous tone"that Indian women are "undoubtedly the most unattractivewomen in the world."
