Container Gardening: Choosing The Right Plant For The Pot(NAPSA)-It’s a growing trend:
Twenty-one million households areplanting container gardens. It savesspace, helps control pests and over-come soil issues, and lets you enjoyfresh, homegrown produce even with-out a yard.
To ensure your success, it’s impor-tant to pick the right plant for the pot.Fortunately, seed companies are devel-oping vegetable seeds well adapted forcontainer gardens.
“Today’s container gardeners nowhave access to even more plants thatare compact in size, yield more, tastegreat and feature unique colors andshapes,” said John Marchese ofSeminis Home Garden seed.
To help you get started, considerthese tips from experts at theUniversity of Illinois Extension:
Choosing a Container• Anything that holds soil and
has drainage holes in the bottom maybe transformed into a container gardenfor terrestrial plants.
• For vibrant plant growth, thecontainers must provide adequatespace for roots and soil media, allow-ing the plant to thrive.
Soil • Soils for containers need to be
well aerated and well drained whilestill being able to retain enough mois-
ture for plant growth. • Never use garden soil by itself
for container gardening, no matter howgood it looks or how well things growin it outside.
• Containers often use soillessor artificial media that contain no soil atall.
• When these mixes are used, they should be moistened slightlybefore planting. Fill a tub with themedia, add water and lightly fluff themedia to dampen it.
• When filling containers withmedia, don’t fill the pot to the top.
Leave about a one-inch space betweenthe top of the soil and rim of the pot.
Fertilizer• A regular fertilizer program is
needed to keep plants growing well andattractively all season.
• The choice of fertilizer analy-sis will depend on the kinds of plantsyou grow. High-nitrogen sources wouldbe good for plants grown for theirfoliage while flowering and vegetablecrops would generally prefer lower-nitrogen and higher-phosphorous fertil-izer types.
Choosing Plants For YourContainer Garden
• Plants that thrive in like soil, watering and light conditions make suc-cessful combinations. When combiningplants, size, texture, proportion, color, setting and lighting all play a role.
Caring For Your Vegetables • Containers offer the advantage
of being portable. As the seasons, tem-perature and light conditions change, you can move your containers so theyenjoy the best conditions for peak per-formance.
• Most fruit-bearing vegetablessuch as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squashes and eggplant require full sun.
• Leafy vegetables such as let-tuce, cabbage and spinach can toleratemore shady locations, unlike root veg-
etables such as radishes, carrots andonions.
• There are no hard and fast ruleswhen it comes to watering. You have towatch your containers and understandhow much moisture each plant needs.Feel the soil-if the first inch or so is dry,add water until it starts to drip out of thedrainage holes.
Special Seeds “Just because they are using a small-
er space to grow the plant doesn’t meanthe fruit has to be small, too,” Marcheseexplained. “For example, if containergardeners are looking for a compact plantthat produces large and tasty tomatoes, they should try a new hybrid tomato vari-ety called Debut.”
Container gardeners don’t have tosacrifice flavor for a more convenientlygrown plant either. “Husky Red is amedium-sized tomato hybrid that hasgreat flavor. We have also developed acherry tomato hybrid version calledHusky Cherry Red that has the potentialto set lots of sweet, flavorful fruit,” addedMarchese.
Other compact hybrid tomato varietiesinclude Patio, which produces about a 4-ounce tomato, and a saladette tomato varietycalled Yaqui that produces large-sized fruit.

You don’t need a lot of space to enjoyfresh homegrown vegetables.

FUN BY THE NUMBERSLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment yousquare off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the num-bers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, col-umn and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric cluesalready provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.
