Historyarchitects Warren and Wetmore, whose other commissions include New York City’s Grand Central Station, afforded all guests an outside room.

In the big-band era of the 1930s and ’40s, the country’s elite passed time in the Providence Biltmore’s Garden Room Supper Club, dancing to the sounds of Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. The Garden Room was famous for its dinner show. To present a Hollywood-style water show, the hotel once turned the dance floor of the Supper Club into an aquarium whose waters were graced by live fish and Ester Williams. When Sonja Henie performed with her ice show on another occasion, the floor was frozen solid to accommodate her silver skates.

During this time, high rollers in Providence often favored the low lights of the Providence Biltmore’s truly sybaritic Bacchante Room. A restaurant ahead of its time, it featured a sunken bar and glass floor with pink lights shining from underneath. The beautiful waitresses wore diaphanous skirts, like those of harem girls.

Christened the “Grande Dame of Providence” when it opened to an awestruck public in 1922, the Providence Biltmore boasts the confidence of an established hostess and the vitality and charm of an ingénue. Fittingly, it has been placed on the National Preservation Register as one of the country’s cherished architectural treasures.

Located in the downtown Providence, the Providence Biltmore borders the city’s financial district. A landmark surrounded by landmarks – the magnificent State House with the third-largest unsupported marble dome in the world, the Union Railroad Station, City Hall, and the Rhode Island Convention Center are all within walking distance.

New York entrepreneurs John Bowman and Louis Wallick built the Providence Biltmore as a 600-room hotel. A model of self-sufficiency, it offered guests a choice of six in-house restaurants and included a hotel drugstore, printing shop, carpentry shop, upholstery shop, and a photo lab. The Hotel Remains the Sparkling Diamond of Providence

In 1938, the hotel suffered the kind of crisis only seen in television movies. During a fierce hurricane, a tidal wave hit Providence. The water ravaged through town and poured through the hotel’s elevator shafts. Couches floated around the Falstaff Room, drifted out into the lobby, and stopped at the revolving door. Today, a plaque placed high on the lobby columns shows the high water mark of that tumultuous event.

The Providence Biltmore is, to this day, the preferred wedding venue in the area for the daughters of the socially prominent and upwardly mobile. Politicians once considered the Providence Biltmore their preferred hotel in Rhode Island. John F. Kennedy stayed here before he was elected President, as did Lyndon Johnson, Estes Kefauver, and Nelson Rockefeller.

The Terrace

Located on the third floor of the hotel, this outdoor space is spectacular. The Terrace offers sweeping views of downtown Providence, as well as the State House. This is a perfect location for a summer reception, dinner party, social cocktail party, and a warm summer morning breakfast.

Garden Room

The original splendor of this room has been carefully restored to its classic ambiance. Once a Supper Club and home of big band dancing in Providence, the Garden Room lends itself to meetings and social functions with equal ease. The most elegant weddings are held in this charming room that can accommodate up to 150 guests.

L’Apogee & the Salons

L’Apogee, a bi-level meeting and function area located on the 17th and 18th floors, offers a bright and elegant atmosphere for both banquet functions and meetings. Adjacent to the main area are five handsome salons, enhancing the flexibility of L’Apogee. Combined, L’Apogee and the salons can accommodate up to 200 people for a social event, while other opportunities exist for smaller meetings and conference spaces.

Grand Ballroom

The beautifully restored Grand Ballroom, located on the 17th floor, offers panoramic views of the city of Providence, making it a glamorous and versatile setting for social or business gatherings. Brides and grooms experience pure magic in this fairy-tale ballroom. The Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to 275 guests.

Ceremony Information

The Providence Biltmore proudly hosts hundreds of the area’s most exquisite weddings each year. Both the Garden Ballroom and the Grand Ballroom are the perfect locations for your wedding ceremony, with each detail attended to by our extremely talented and detail-oriented event staff.

The Garden Room can accommodate wedding ceremonies for 200 guests, and the Grand Ballroom can accommodate 300 wedding guests.

Local AttractionsThe Providence Biltmore is located in the

center of some of the best attractions in the state. Providence is host to “Waterfire,” many museums, the Providence Performing Arts Center, Trinity Repertory Company, Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence Place Mall, five-star restaurants, and many major universities. The hotel is just 30 minutes from Newport and 60 minutes from Boston.

Parking

Valet parking is available at the hotel for a fee. There are also self-parking garages in close proximity to the hotel.
