Stars, moons and planets have long been inspiration for designers. For afi cionados and anyone who appreciates the artistry to be found in astrono-my, there is a galaxy of beautiful items for the home.

Oscar Tusquets Blanca designed his Luna rug in 2010, and it’s an amazingly realistic recreation of the moon in its waxing phase. (www.yliving.com, $2,580)

Megan Lee in Tampa makes ethereal prints of the planets that have a haunting, lovely quality. “In the past couple of years, I became extremely interested in astrono-my, and wanted to pay tribute to our own solar system,” she says.

She hopes people will display the prints remembering “what we’ve discovered, and how much more we have to explore.” A grouping would be a wonderful feature

wall, but even one of them would make a statement. Lee also offers a print of all the planets together. (www.meganleestudio.etsy.com )

Artisan and designer Asher Israelow makes walnut tables inlaid with brass dots that map out the constellations. You supply a specifi c date, and he researches what the sky looked like on that night, then makes a custom table depicting the star map. He’s done them as wedding and birthday gifts. (www.asherisraelow.com)

Another Brooklyn-based designer, Palo Samko, crafts tables out of claro walnut and blackened steel evoking the Northern Hemisphere sky map with Southern Cross detail. (www.palosamko.com)

Urban Outfi tters has a neat lamp stamped with a constellation that looks lovely when lit. Find here too a cool glow-in-the-dark moon clock that stays lit for half an hour after you turn off the switch — a great night light for a kids’ room, it also would work well as an unexpected light for an entryway foyer. The retailer also has Los Angeles-based artist Claire Oring’s Star Catcher wall art, a conceptual print of a young woman reaching up to grasp a hand-ful of nebulae. (www.urbanoutfi tters.com, constellation lamp, $49; moon clock, $49; Star Catcher, $39)

Another neat clock features a mashup of 65 of astronomy photographer Norbert Rosing’s moon photographs. It’s also luminescent, for up to two hours. (www.coolstuffexpress.com, $32.97)

Pillars of Creation, in Portland, Ore., offers a striking digital print featuring the phrase, “We Are All Made of Stars.” The words are composed of space images. The studio also offers an interesting pillow cover printed with Hubble telescope images of stars and galaxies. (www.esty.

A gardening list for the new year

One day the week before Christmas, my wife was going through the mail and noted the arrival of

the fi rst garden seed catalogue. A couple days later, another

arrived. Undoubtedly, these went to gardeners throughout the country, and while the

garden season is still far away for residents of northern cli-mates, Floridians should be placing orders in the next few weeks if seeds are to arrive in time for vegetable gardens

to be planted about March 1. It is time for some family

discussion about what to plant in the garden this year and also some thought about the garden layout. It is important to rotate crops so they are not in the same spot as last year.

I have found it helpful to make a list of items I hope to get done on my farm in the coming year, including the landscape and vegetable gardens.

The lists make an interesting collection for review and are useful to help recall when trees, hedges and ornamental shrubs were planted. These lists also help budget for items to be purchased, and they allow one to focus on sections of the land-scape that need attention. A list of this nature results in a planned landscape and helps prevent spot purchases of plants that don’t fi t landscape goals.

Time is another factor in all this planning, and a list of priorities not only assists with budgeting monetary resources, but also time allocations for projects that encompass more than a day or two.

After you have managed your property for several years, you probably will fi nd recurring activities that always occur at

Q: The enclosed photo-graphs represent a

dressing table and bench that has been in my family for more than 100 years. It was

painted white, and since then I stripped the white paint exposing the original walnut fi nish. In one of the drawers there

is a metal plate affi xed with two small nails. The plate has an embossed fi gure with the word “Cavalier.” I would like your expert opinion on its value.

The other picture is a lady on a stand. The statue is 2 feet tall and on a very heavy 1-foot-tall stand. My son found it on his travels.

S., Internet

A: I think your attractive dressing table was made in

France, circa 1900. The bench

was likely made in France as well, but not to go with the dressing table. The dressing table, as is, would perhaps sell in the $100-plus range. The bench would likely sell in the $25 to $75 range.

The other piece depicting a young woman carrying water appears to be made of bisque

porcelain. Figural pieces like this

were often storybook-themed, and made throughout Europe. I think it was produced in the late 19th

century. Potential dollar

value is $100 to $200.

■ ■ ■

Q: What can you tell me about

the history of my Noritake china? The pattern is

Clintonia. I bought it from a local who said she bought the set piece by piece from a depart-ment store in Chicago, perhaps in the 1940s.

C.McN., Internet

A: The Noritake Company

was founded in 1904 in Nagoya, Japan. The company has produced large quantities of quality chinaware for export to the United States ever since. The Clintonia pattern was fi rst issued in the 1940s. Potential dollar value is based on pattern demand. For more specifi c information about the pattern, you might contact Replacements Ltd. in Greensboro, N.C., at 800-REPLACE, or www.replacements.com.

■ ■ ■

Q: My sisters and I have recently become the owners

of an old library table. It is very heavy and appears to be made of

mahogany. The table is a family piece with many memories. We have not been able to locate any similar tables online. Would you give us an idea of its current value and where and when it has made?

S.A.S., Internet

A: Your library table was made in the United States, possibly

Grand Rapids, Mich. The style is late Empire Revival. The time of production is late 19th century. The wood is typically mahogany veneer. Tables like yours were made in large quantities. The reason you do not see them online or in the antiques furni-ture market is due to a lack of interest in the style. Potential dollar value is $75 to $150.

HOLMES: Annual color a piece of the puzzle that requires some planningcertain times of the year. For example, I always try to plant my spring vegetable garden the fi rst weekend in March. In order to prepare for this, I know the soil should be tilled the third Saturday in February. Potatoes usually are planted on the Martin Luther King holiday, and hedges are pruned Memo-rial Day and Labor Day week-ends. A routine like this will make your annual calendar more manageable, and will ensure things get done and that they get done at the right time.

There are, of course, excep-tions to planning, and this includes planned purchases. A few years ago, in the middle of the year, my wife purchased a

Yellow Jasmine vine at one of the Master Gardener plant sales. It was a good, quality plant at a good price, and the plant was on the University of Florida’s recommended list of vines. It would be a good addition to our garden. When we arrived home, she wanted to know where we would plant it. Since this vine needs a trellis and we didn’t have one, the question really was not where the vine would be planted, but when we were going to get a trellis. It wasn’t on the wish list for that year, and so we pur-chased a small, inexpensive trellis. Without this vine purchase, I probably wouldn’t have thought about a trellis, but in the years since, it has become

a nice addition to our land-scape.

Annual color is another piece of the landscape puzzle that requires some planning. Last fall, I was in a local nursery and admired the colorful pansies that were on display. Thinking about how well they perform in cool weather, I spoke to the nursery owner about them. He told me they were already sold to a local landscape contractor. An Apopka nursery placed a special order, and the plants were being held until the owner could pick them up. “By the way,” he said, “this Apopka nursery has a new pansy color selection you’ll fi nd interesting — orange and blue. You might think about getting some for

the offi ce.” It is my opinion that only a few annuals, planted en masse, make an affordable, yet colorful statement for the landscape. It is important to locate these in just the right spot for visibility and full enjoyment. Over the course of the year, it probably will be necessary to change these out two or three times, so they become another part of your annual planning list. The Extension Service has an old, but very good, publication on annuals — CIR569 — that will be useful in your planning. Of particular interest is the chart indicating planting and remov-al dates — a perfect item for your landscape-planning calendar. Call the Extension

Service at 671-8400 if you would like to receive a copy.

In this season of refl ection and planning, creating a list for your landscape and gardening efforts will help budget your time and money while giving you a schedule for getting things done. When it comes time to welcome in 2014, you’ll be able to pause and refl ect over your list and take satisfaction in all you got done in a productive 2013, and you will have a foundation for planning your landscaping hobby for next year.

I love making New Year’s resolutions, and here are a few from me and my decorating

team that you might want to adopt to make your

home even more lovely in 2013. (Thank-fully, none of them involves di-eting!)DO SOMETHING WONDERFUL WITH

WINDOWS: For years, I was convinced that shutters were the only kind of window treatments that would work in my living room. But I revisited the idea of drapes, thinking they could be my ticket to fabric paradise. I am so glad I did, because I was completely wrong — my windows look lovely framed by simple fabric panels.

Next on my list: Updating the tired drapes in my bedroom. I prefer subtle colors in my bedroom, perhaps because by the end of the day my over-charged brain needs a chance to chill out. The camel-and-cream animal print I used for my drapes is the perfect blend of edgy and serene.RETHINK YOUR DECOR WHEN THE DECORATIONS COME DOWN: My home always seems so bare right after I take down holiday decorations. But it’s the perfect time to look at your decor with fresh, new eyes and make some much-needed changes. First, take a critical look at everything in your home. Start with the displays in bookcases and on side tables. How can you edit them so the design is clean? As you

pinpoint items you are not using or no longer love, donate them to a charitable organization so they can bring joy to someone else.

Once you’ve done a good, thorough cleaning-out, take a second look at your furniture placement. Does the fl ow of each room work? Are all the furnish-ings to scale? If not, try moving pieces from room to room, using them in new places and in new ways.HANG SOME BEAUTIFUL ART: Take a look at the walls of your home. Are they fi lled with artwork that makes your heart sing? Far too often, customers tell us they don’t hang art in their homes because they are afraid they won’t buy the “right” artwork or hang it “correctly.” Toss that one out the window, because in my book, the only “right” artwork is the kind that makes your heart skip a beat. And the only “correct” way to hang it is the way that pleases you.

Can it get any better than that?ADD THEATRICAL LIGHTING: “All the world’s a stage, so you need to light it well,” says Bruce, our resident actor and singer. Bruce uses three creative techniques to create dramatic lighting in a home.

The fi rst is “framing,” placing a pair of matched lamps on either side of a killer display. Try it on your buffet or mantel this year. You’ll be surprised by how the lamps spotlight the tableau.

The second is “illuminat-ing,” using lovely lamps to provide the light you need to perform a task, like reading.

And the last is “high-lighting,” using a small accent lamp to call attention to something special to you. To pull this off, pick out some objects of great sentimental value, like snapshots of loved ones, a treasure from vacation or a family

heirloom. Then, put them on a side table under the downward light of an accent lamp.FRESHEN ACCENT PILLOWS: The secret to being a pillow princess is to fi ll the pillows with high-quality down inserts. Get rid on any old poly forms you may have in your accent pillows and replace them with down pillow forms.

When you do, you will be amazed by how sink-into-soft your pillows look. Instead of the stiff, uninviting look you get with poly form pillows, those stuffed with down inserts are plump and full and indulgent. Unlike poly forms, down forms don’t lose their shape. Just plump them and they are perfect again.

Q: I’m trying to get the corrosion off my older

bathtub mixing valve and sink faucet. I have tried using strong cleaners, without success. Also, some spots on the handles appear to have a gold color coming through the chrome plating. No matter how hard I scrub, it does not look clean. Can you please help? What can I try next?

— Lee, Ohio

A: I’m sorry, Lee, but it sounds as if harsh

cleaning over the years might have taken a toll on your faucets — or if they’re really old, the fi nish might just be wearing off.

Either way, to solve this problem you may need to fi nd new handles that match your present fi xtures, or you can change out the entire faucet and/or tub valve to start new.

The good news is that today’s faucet fi nishes are very durable. But you should always clean them with care. Use non-abra-

sive mild cleaners, rinse them thoroughly with a soft, damp cloth and blot them dry. Keeping the faucet as dry as possible is

important, especially if you have hard water.

Finally, only clean the faucet if it is dirty. Constantly polishing a clean faucet or tub valve might make it sparkle for a while, but sooner or later you may lose your luster!

Duke Rountree2013 PRESIDENTOCALA/MARION COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®

HELLO!

www.OMCAR.com

I am thrilled, but most importantly honored, to be selected to serve as the 2013 President of the Ocala Marion

County Association of REALTORS®. The future of real estate for 2013 in our local market looks very promising for

both sellers and buyers. Why? We are seeing improvements in local job market, interest rates are at historically

low rates, and Marion County leads the state in affordability of housing. However, the strength of the housing

market is based entirely on improving core fundamentals: continuing economic growth (at reasonable rate),

improving job growth (with jobs will come more housing starts), improving consumer confidence as home prices

strengthen and in turn the growth in the number of new households.

Rental demand looks to increase in 2013 with an estimated 5 to 6 million new rental households created in the

next 10 years, mainly caused by lenders tight credit standards and low housing inventory. With apartment rents

increasing to its highest levels since 2007 in most areas of the country, it is often much cheaper to buy a home,

than to rent but not always a viable solution.

I want to say “Thank You” in advance for taking the time to read my thoughts and I hope you will take the time

to visit one of the many local REALTORS® serving in our community as a trusted advisor to all things real estate.

If you need assistance locating a REALTOR® to serve your needs and wants, please contact, or stop by our local

Glendale house was in ‘Offi ce’ star Jenna Fischer’s ballpark The Los Angeles Times

The former Casey Stengel estate, built for the baseball legend in 1925, is a

hit with actress Jenna Fis-cher. The “Offi ce” star re-cently bought the Glendale

property for $1.9 million.

The Mediterra-nean-style house of about 4,600 square feet sits on close

to an acre with a pool house, a swimming pool, a tennis court and an orchard. The main house features a formal foyer, a

living room with a barrel ceiling, two sitting rooms, fi ve bedrooms and fi ve bathrooms. There is a separate maid’s quarters off the garage.

Fischer, 38, has played receptionist Pam Beesly on the sitcom since 2005. She will star in the fi lm “Kiss Me,” due out next year.

Stengel was a Major

League Baseball outfi elder who went on to manage the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Boston Braves, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets before retiring in 1965. The Baseball Hall of Famer lived at the Glendale house until his death in 1975 at 85.

The property came on the market in June at $2.41 million.

■ ■ ■

Former pro basketball star and coach Elgin Baylor and his wife, Elaine, have put their

Beverly Crest area estate on the market at $4.25 million.

The contemporary Mediterranean-style home, built in 1981, is sited on nearly an acre to take advantage of canyon and city views. Features include a 1,600-square-foot great room that could func-tion as a home theater or game room. There are multiple decks, six bedrooms, eight bath-rooms and more than 8,000 square feet of living space.

Baylor, 78, was a small

forward with the Minne-apolis/Los Angeles Lakers from 1958 to 1971. The Hall of Famer went on to coach the New Orleans Jazz and was general manager for the Los Angeles Clippers for more than 20 years.

The Baylors paid $1,445,249 for the property in 1992, public records show. They raised their family in the home and would now like a smaller place in the area.

Artifactory has pro-duced a conversation starter: When the Voyager

1 and 2 missions were launched, they carried golden records similar to LPs. Engraved into these were sounds and images from Earth, chosen by a NASA team led by

cosmologist and astrono-mer Carl Sagan. Included on each disc was a detailed diagram giving the fi nder instructions on how to play it. Artifac-tory’s 12-inch gold metal

Q: You have often said that crawlspace vents

need to be opened in the winter. Why is that? I always thought they should be closed to keep my water pipes from freezing.

A: I used to think the same thing, but the

energy crisis of the 1970s led to a lot of research on how to maintain homes to conserve energy.

Over time, it was discov-ered that making a home substantially airtight also would trap moisture and other gases inside the living environment. Warm moisture-laden air or humid air naturally travels

from the warmer areas outside the home to cooler areas inside the home, where it can condensate back into

water.Inside the living areas of

our homes, we control the fl ow of moisture using fans, air conditioners and dehumidifi ers. Otherwise, a tightly sealed home could become a garden for mold spores.

We also need to control the levels of humidity in the crawlspace, where

water vapors can saturate the wood fl oor system, which then can lead to wood rot, mold growth, decay and structural damage.

Many of the crawlspaces I’ve inspected have elevated-humidity prob-lems. To control the humidity, you open the crawl vents in the winter to allow the warm moist air to fl ow naturally to the cooler dryer outside environment.

In the summer, you close the vents to keep the warm moist air outside and away from the much cooler dryer air in the crawl-space.

However, if you have a

water line near one of the crawlspace vents, that vent should be permanently sealed and insulated to prevent freeze damage to the water line.

In addition to preparing the crawlspace for winter, you should also:

Remove garden hoses ■

from water faucets. A modern anti-freeze faucet can be damaged if the hose is left in place all winter. If the faucet has an inside shut-off valve, close it until spring.

Check to see if you have ■

a kitchen or bathroom sink with plumbing on or next to an outside wall; the pipes could freeze. To protect the water pipes,

leave the cabinet doors open or let the water trickle slowly during the night. Placing a 60-watt lamp on the fl oor just outside the cabinet doors also can provide enough additional heat to prevent freezing. Never place a light fi xture inside the cabinet.

Insulate the water lines ■

in the crawlspace or basement. Insulation conserves hot water while you are using it and prevents condensation from forming on the cold water pipes in the summer.

Locate the main water ■

shut-off valve and make sure it is operable. Most older valves are diffi cult to

close and many will leak when you do turn them off. A minor repair now could save you from an expen-sive repair later if you are unable to turn the water off in an emergency.

In mobile homes, electric ■

heat tape may be neces-sary to prevent freezing of the exposed water pipes.
